orangerfulI just finished watching 'Munich'. I don't know why I watched it really. I've just had it out from netflix for awhile now and felt like I should watch it and send it back. Plus, it's from a part of history that I'm sketchy on (the 1970s) so I was curious to find out what the film was about. jimithingy's mom commented that they had no desire to watch the film because they had lived through it actually happening. I didn't know what they meant until now.
I only knew the very basics of the story - it had something to do with a terrorist attack at the Munich Olympics. I knew the movie had a lot of buzz about it when it was released, but I really didn't know why. My knowledge of the entire Israel vs Arab world is very limited. I know it's not a happy place over there, but like most grudges that have been going on since the begining of time, I'm not sure anyone really knows why they hate each other so much.
The movie was good. It's not really a fun movie. It's falling into that whole 'Schindler's List' - 'Saving Private Ryan' category. Movie's that I'm happy I've seen once so I can discuss them, but probably won't watch again. Just...three hours of tension, of worrying about the characters who were essentially assassins anyway. It's a very emotional film.
I can't quite find the words to describe the movie. The story follows one man, the group leader, so we get to meet his family, find out about his background (of course he has mommy & daddy issues). He's young and his wife is pregnant and he's recruited into this assassination scheme (they play on his loyalty to Israel since he was raised, from what I understood, in an orphanage since his mother abandoned him for a time while his father was in prison). He starts out very gung-ho, all talk about doing things for his country and his people. Then he has to kill the first man, and you can see that he wasn't ready -- no wait, that's a bad choice, no one should ever be ready to take another person's life -- you can see that some part of him dies in that first gunshot.
Throughout the film, he keeps flashing back to that night in Munich, what we think happened to the terrorists and the hostages. And for awhile that fuels his ability to kill. But eventually they turn into ghosts haunting him, and by the end of the film, he is struggling to become a normal person again, knowing that he has killed people in the same ruthless and uncaring manner as those terrorists did.
It was a good film. It's all about the cycle of hatred, the cycle of killing and how it leads nowhere but somehow no one can stop it. Because it will take more than one man, and it seems that the only way you can come to realize these things is to have done horrible things, which means the cycle has been set in motion again. And after creating a society that believes that this is the right thing to do, when you try and step away from it, you are shunned for deserting, when really you're trying to find a better way to live. (this applies to all of the countries in this grand world).
I need to go read the reviews now, see what was said about the film. i do reccomend it but you really need to be in the right mental place to watch it. It's not a popcorn movie, or a simple documentary. It's 2 hours and 44 minutes of tension, confusion, violence, murder, betrayal, family, ...it's indescribable, but it leaves you with a heavy feeling in your heart afterwards.
Also, Eric Bana has nice hair in this movie. I don't much care for him when I see him prettied up, but with the 1970s hair and clothes, he looked nice.
