Okay, I really enjoyed that movie. I'm not the biggest Superman fan ever, but I really enjoyed the film last night, knowing enough about the man of steel to get all the in jokes and homages tossed out there. (perhaps I know more than I think?)

Anyway! It was an awesome night, the Senator once again wows me with how darn cool it is! We got there and the WB Rep was there, and he told those of us with Superman shirts or capes on to step inside the theater for a moment. So [livejournal.com profile] toothlesshag and I went inside and we got free goodies! A Superman hat, t-shirt, pin, and bracelet! So that pretty much set the mood for the night - I was giddie. I always get a buzz from the Senator, it's never just a movie, it's a party. The crowd was cheering and applauding and it just felt good.

Personally, the movie gave me what I wanted and needed to see. I've been reading other reviews, now that I've seen it, and it seems you'll either love it or hate it but for all the same reasons. Yes, the Lex Luthor plot is a little comic-booky, but it's not what's important. Like any good [joss whedon] fan will tell you, it's all about the journey that our hero takes.

I really liked Lois Lane in this movie, which I did not expect. Last time I saw Kate Bosworth in a movie, it was 'Blue Crush', which did not inspire acting confidence haha. And Mary Jane, the latest superhero "girlfriend" drove me insane. But Bryan Singer & Co. did not let me down. I found Lois to be right where I wanted her to be. She seems to have found a certain balance her life, her priorities are mostly where they need to be. I mean, she is Lois Lane, so she does endanger herself a few times, but she's not stupid or an air head.

Jimmy Olsen was adorable, I wanted to pinch his cheek. haha. He had some of the best lines, little cute throw away bits that lightened up the scenes. James "Cyclops" Marsden also did a nice job, great to see his entire face for once!

Brendan Routh really surprised me. I mean, in the still photos, he looks okay. A man in a tight blue suit, red underwear, and a cape in a still photo will always look silly. A man on the screen flying thru the air with the blue outfit, red cape flapping behind him in the wind, now THATS HOT! He was seriously channeling Christopher Reeves, which was fine with me. Reeves IS Superman when it comes to the big screen, and I had no problem with Routh emulating his acting from the original films. It wasn't a dead on impersonation, (ala Mathew Broderick doing his best Gene Wilder for 'Producers') but more that you had the feeling he had watched the original movie a lot and was playing Superman.

Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor had just the right amount of crazy mixed in to his most recent plot for world domination. Again, that plot is mostly there so that the real story (about superman returning to earth after 5 years) can unfold. Luthor provides the action, but the real interesting parts are watching Superman find his place again.

I thought of Buffy (stop snickering) while thinking about Superman afterwards. Joss made a comment once about how Buffy is super strong, so the only way to really create peril for her in the show is to break her heart. The same with Superman. You can't hurt him physically, but you can break his heart, and that's harder to heal.

And I left the movie, not thinking that the world needed Superman. Not that the world needed a savior. But we want one. We want a pure hero every now and then. Batman is the badboy, Spiderman is the kid, Superman is forever. He is incorruptable. He protects anyone and everyone in need. He doesn't kill people. He's unstoppable unless you find a little green rock to throw at him. And there's something uplifting about him. Something that taps into my subconcious, those archetypes, at least for me. I see superman, and I feel safe.

And I want to fly. I want to be able to just look up and soar thru the sky. To zoom from place to place. I felt like I was flying with Superman during this movie and it gave me such a rush.

i might have more to say later, but now I must go download superman pics and make icons!

Managed to get a few photos snapped in the madness of the evening! And now I just went overboard with uploading them to parazz, then uploading an mp3...then trying to make it cool. Just check out my parazz Superman Returns album, then press the play button on top of the screen (And turn your speakers on) and laugh at my dorkiness.

it's not ridiculous, to each there own. And Kevin Spacey is the MAN! I'm so ready to watch 'Usual Suspects' again to see him at his finest. Seeing a movie just for Spacey is totally justifiable!

I hope I didn't build up the movie too much for you. I can definately see how this movie wouldn't work for some people. It did exactly what I wanted and needed it to do and I left the theater happy.

I loved the Superman movie, especially with all the homages and cribbage from the original movie. It was good, enjoyable stuff. The plot was comic book-y, but well. It is a comic book film, so I was all right with that. I was... I'm torn on Lois. I like Kate Bosworth okay, but she didn't have that edge I'm used to on Lois Lane. While it may be because she's a mom and has softened since then, trying to settle down, it didn't quite work for me. But it wasn't anything too bad, and she was quite tolerable. I did like Brandon. He didn't quite have that sparkle that Christopher Reeve had, but who can top him in the role? Brandon did a great job. As did Spacey. Spacey totally made Lex Luthor for me. :D And I was really pleased with how much dignity James Marsden's character was treated. He was a hero, too -- he just needed a sea plane to fly. :D

I totally agree with you about the archetype giving you a sense of security. We actually don't need a Superman -- the world would either hate, envy, or abuse him -- we do want one. We all want a hero. And Superman taps into that desire.

Good stuff.
