So, after attempting to read about half of the interview with Rob Thomas (Creator of 'Veronica Mars') I decided I probably do not like him. He's not giving off a very Joss vibe, like he's totally unaware of what he's created.

The article is interesting if only to read the writing process for a show that involves so much mystery. But, OY!, this guy, I'm not sure he's actually watching the show.

First of all, he makes a comment that Veronica hasn't changed since s1. Mr Thomas, why on EARTH would we be watching if she was a totally static character? She HAS changed. S1 she was an outcast, totally alone, with only her dad and her "new best friend" wallace (and sometimes her dead best friend Lily). s2, after solving the murder of Lily and the mystery of her and Duncan, she's pretty much back in the 09er circle. Like Buffy, she spends the first few episodes of the season reclaiming her Veronica-ness, that she is still an "other", though maybe not as much. s3 starts up and now she's solved the mystery of her own rape and thinks she's in a normal relationship. She's fine with being an "other", and is enjoying the fact that she sort of gets to start over a little bit in college (though she still has Wallace, Mac, and Logan...and Dick).

Second, this man must have a messed up relationship if he things Lo/Ve is a healthy romantic relationship that can stand the test of time. Those two are so high school to me. I'm not sure about Piz, and I don't think Veronica should jump his bones or anything, but Logan needs to stay OVER. Get the boy a spin off show where he fights demons or something, just stop making them break up and then get back together. That's not a healthy thing! Neither of them have healthy backgrounds as far as relationships go - Logan's lovely abusive father and ignored mother. Veronica's parents split (though pre-split we assume things were okay...we don't get much info on that time period) and her mother became an alcoholic that stole from her own daughter. So both clearly have trust issues that need to be worked on. And I really think they need to work on them seperatly. I still don't trust Logan 100% - his asshole tendencies bother me and I think Veronica could do better. She's smarter than him, why does she waste her time with him? Because apparently her writer is stuck in high school. MOVE ON! If you love him so much Rob, you marry him. Let Veronica GROW! In fact - LET HER BE SINGLE! It wouldn't kill her to have her just be Veronica for awhile and not dating some schmuck. She was great in s1 when she was pretty much alone. She can lust after people, sure but keep them apart!

Third - they argue about a scene when Veronica sasses a pizza boy who recognizes her. I agree with the interviewer, it came off weird - Veronica reverted back to her 09er self, very Cordelia like - and got all snotty with the kid. Thomas says she was "deflecting praise" but it did not come off like that. She has several moments like that, where she seems to reset and fall into 09er mode and she's rude or mean and Thomas apparently doesn't see that.

From reading the interview I got the feeling that Thomas just lucked out with s1. s2 survived because he clearly has an amazing writing staff that can hold their own and a FANTASTIC crew (actors, directors etc) that make the show work no matter what. (many an episode have I not really enjoyed, save for Kristen's fantastic delivery of one-liners).

It's dissappointing when you read interviews like this. You hope you've got another Joss-like person, who respects his fans, understands characters and writing, but it sounds like Thomas is still stuck in "novel writing" mode and not thinking in an arc. (this might explain some problems with the show, the other staff might write Veronica&Co. as evolving characters then Thomas comes in to do an episode an resets it back to zero).

*deep breath* But it's okay, because I can be a fan of VM and not a fan of him, because VM is still a fun show to watch and Kristen Bell is still adorable and the whole cast works so well together. I hope CW renews it for another season, I thin Veronica should at least be allowed to hit 5 years - as long as they let her GROW.

Just popping in to say Word to this post. And also, it's possible I don't have screen shots yet. But I have a valid excuse! I had to go visit the family and there is no photoshop for cleaning or cropping photos. And no one wants a 1280x1024 shot of three sea lions in wailing caverns.
