my own personal fan club?
Feb. 12th, 2007 07:01 pmSo, today was...interesting.
There's this 3-some of teens that came in last week. One boy, two girls. One of the girls is "going out" with the boy, the other is the girl's friend. Anyway, last week I was nice to them. We have a survey going on, trying to get idea for prizes for our teen summer reading club, and I asked them if they would fill it out. Then one girl came up and they were all giggly, and I think they were trying to see if they could upset me. The one girl was asking for books about "gangs". The boy kept quoting from 'Epic Movie', and his "girlfriend" kept smacking him.
Anyway, they were back in today (not the hard to do, since the school is right across the street). But the one girl decided to follow me around. First she wanted information about volunteering here. Then information about volunteering at an animal shelter. It's about at this time that the Harbour School came over for a visit and one of my other "friends" (a star wars fan) came over to talk to me. So now I have these two non-help-needing people hanging around my side of the desk, while real patrons are coming in. And I'm trying to be polite to them but still snag anyone who walks by looking like they don't want to intterupt.
Harbour School left, but the girl was still around. And she just kept following me. I'd go to pull books, she'd come over into the fiction area and talk while I did it. I'd take the books back to the desk, she'd come back over and start talking. I'd go into the back to get something, or help another patron - when I came back she was still standing by the desk. For awhile, her two friends came to join her - so I'd walk to the shelf, she'd follow me, and then they'd follow her!!! It was like I had 3 shadows.
I feel like her other friend and the "boyfriend" are weirding her out and she's trying to not hang out with them but it's hilarious that she's latched onto me. Problem is, I'm horrible at saying "you gotta go away now". If she shows up tomorrow, I'm going to have to put my foot down, and ask her to back off a bit. But she's clearly just really lonely. From the snippets I caught of her talking about her home life, she's not the happiest camper and getting attention, even from some random librarian, is somehow fullfilling.
Of course, I can't deny that I don't enjoy the attention. I love breaking the librarian stereotype, even just a little. So to quote 'Napoleon Dynamite' back at them or tell them about a comic book does give me a little rush. But I must learn to resist! "Control, control, you must learn control!"
At least she's nice enough. She really wants to volunteer too. We'll see. Luckily, I'm not in charge of volunteers anymore. Just pass that one on down the line. let someone else say no.
