after suffering thru one too many "omg last night's episode was horrible becase [insert spoiler here]" posts on [livejournal.com profile] veronica_mars, I ended up adding myself to this friending meme going around. So we have lots of new peeps reading the journal today *waves hello*

I dunno, I wasn't part of the fandom community when I was watching Buffy so when the big changes hit on that show, I didn't get to see the fan reactions as much. But some of the posts on the VM comm have been just ridiculous in there anger and attacking of the show (and other fans). I love the people who think this is a personal attack on them. I'm so sure that the writers sat around like Mr. Burns, attempting to get the small fanbase they have to turn on them. No no no. To paraphrase Master Whedon - don't give them what they want, give them what they need.

Let's not pass judgement on what happened last week until we see where this is all going. Perhaps the events from 'Mars,Bars' will lead to some exciting twists and turns in the Veronica-verse. If you want a show that never grows or changes, then just buy season 1 and keep it on repeat. I want a show with characters and stories that can go any way they want to.

Anyway, now that I have all these new buddies that are VM fans - [livejournal.com profile] crazylike_afox, [livejournal.com profile] impalalove, [livejournal.com profile] ladynaberrie, [livejournal.com profile] lostacanthus, [livejournal.com profile] meronica_vars, and [livejournal.com profile] shinetastic - I'm hoping we can have some intelligent and civil discussions about the future of one of the best shows on TV right now. :D

Word.

On a whole, I liked the episode. I almost didn't watch it, (home issues had me down) and I'm glad I changed my mind.

You are a shining beacon of objectivity in the stormy sea of fandom. Or something along those lines. Really well said. I personally loved this episode so much! I was genuinely surprised to find people didn't like it. It was such a big step forward in so many ways. Especially on the LoVe front.

*takes a deep breath*

Logan and Veronica kind of remind me of Buffy an Angel. You know with the love of epic proportions and all. In the Buffyverse, Angel got his own spinoff which i think stopped the relationship from stagnating. Of course in Veronica Mars, spinoff's arent exactly viable, and my main concern was that the rest of the season (and the show) would be spent in this vile loop of angst, but I felt this episode really, honestly showed them moving on, as well as managing to be civil to each other. I feel that nothing but good things can come from this.

phew! anyway can't wait till next week!

see, for me, they've gone from Buffy & Angel to Buffy & Riley. Riley was insecure about Buffy's power and independance but still loved her anyway. But he would have these moments where his insecurities would leak thru, and I would be annoyed. Buffy was strong willed and oblivious of the pain it was causing Riley, but just didn't have the heart to break up with him. I think Logan needed to have that moment that Riley had in s5, when he was talking to Xander and told him that he knew Buffy didn't really love him (not in a romantic way). And when I see Logan, I know he cares for Veronica, and he has his moments of boyfriendness, but I don't think he's quite 100% with her powers and I don't think she really loves him in that romantic sense.

I'm happy they are not together for the moment. In the one RT interview I've read, he made it pretty clear that he wanted them together. I'd rather they just stayed friends - I don't mind sexual tension, that's fun, but it's only fun when it's tension. 'Mars, Bars' reminded me of what a fun character Logan is when he's not moping 24/7. I hope they can keep that up for the rest of the season, because mopey Logan and angsty Veronica are not as much fun as snarky Logan and sassy Veronica.

oooh brilliant observation. and so true. And omg how fun is it to compare EVERYTHING to Buffy. Squee! I hadn't heard that RT interview however, and it kind of bum's me out, I mean how many times can they get back together then split up. it wears you down.

PS omg season 8 buffy icon squee! i gotta get my preorder organised!

yes, I took that first step into uber-geekdom and actually got a subscription at my local comic shop. Luckily, one of my other friends already has a box there, so I'm just getting my comic delivered to his box, otherwise I'd be tempted to order more (and with Joss taking over 'Runaways', I was tempted...)

*waves* But there are other shows that have quite taken a drop in their ratings. The O.C. is one recent example. But I know how you feel about the bad criticism. But (you sensed it coming, didn't you) it's about your personal choice for your favorite show, right? I mean, I liked a old show that aired almost three years ago called John Doe, and it was cancelled after five episodes due to poor ratings.

oh John Doe, that had such promise! I thought it got a full season run, or at least 13 episodes? I'm sure it will be out on DVD soon eough, since he's in 'Prison Break' now (actually, I'm surprised it's not out!) I still remember that reveal in the last aired episode. the *GASP*! and the OMG I can't wait until next...wait, there is no next season? BUT! BUT! *tears*

I don't trust ratings anyways, and I only like to use them (like all statistics) for the power of making my opinion look good. I've never met anyone with a Nielsons box on their TV, and with all the digital cable now, you'd think they'd be able to track who was watching a lot better. Ratings do not reflect quality - 'American Idol' rakes in however many viewers each week but shows like 'John Doe', 'Firefly', and 'Veronica Mars' come in low even though they are far superior products.

You watched John Doe? Okay, I'm so happy I friended you. I didn't watch the reveal, because it wasn't available for my area. I'm so mad about that. But I agree with you with ratings. Not a lot of people have a Nielson box.

I hate 'American Idol', 'Canadian Idol' and stuff like that. Reality tv has gotten so overrated nowadays. 'Survivor' has to be in its seventh or eighth season, and I kinda have developed a distaste for it nowadays when in the past, I would have cheered for the winners. I agree with you, I'm more of the "superior fans" in regards to tv like that. I still remember 'Jack and Bobby.' Oh, man, I would have liked to know who was president.

Yeah, I'm not big on reality shows. The closest I got to watching one was 'Amazing Race' back when it was only on in the summer. And now I watch 'Iron Chef America' every now and then. I despise 'American Idol' and everything it stands for. I'm a singer/songwriter kind of person, who wants to know that their musicians started at the bottom and worked their way up - not won the teenybopper vote for singing some cheesy 'Grease' song.

I *remember* 'Jack & Bobby', but I never watched it. Didn't seem like there would be much buttkicking or snarkiness. I tend to lean towards shows with that in the mix. :)
