book meme zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Apr. 28th, 2007 11:53 pmBusy day. Too busy. Too tired to write so I'm going to do the book meme going around and then just pass out
Hardback, trade paperback or mass market paperback?
Gonna have to go with trade or hardback. They are both big enough to handle and read comfortably. Paperbacks are just so small and they look grubby so fast. I'm not as fond of them
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Borders - even though I rarely shop in either because they are so insanely expensive!
Bookmark or dog-ear?
Bookmark. I'm a librarian, I can't stand to damage a book! I have several random items I use for bookmarks - bona-fide store bought bookmarks with movie characters on them, old video game boxes I cut up and saved the sides to (Monkey Island), and the little blue slips that the library prints out with my due dates on them
Amazon or brick and mortar?
Amazon. Send me my books and no one gets hurt. And maybe a couple DVDs. Hm, free shipping over $25 you say? Well...maybe a CD too...
Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random?
I have a lot of series, so I tend to clump my books together by author. My Buffy books are all lumped together too. Nothing is really alphabetized, that's what I do at work, not at home (it wouldn't last, I can almost hear
jimithingy plotting to move books just to drive me crazy)
Keep, throw away, or sell?
KEEP! If I own a book, I read it already and loved it and want to keep it forever. I have a few books (few = 20+) that I have taken from the donations/discard pile at work, and some of those I end up throwing away because I look at them, realize they were discarded because they had a giant stain inside, and toss them out.
Keep dust jacket or toss it?
I have no problem with dust jackets and I like to display my books so they need their covers...so they can be judged...
Read with dust jacket or remove it?
I have no problem with dust jackets.
Short story or novel?
Mostly novels, though I also enjoy the Smart Pop essay books. Not really a big short story reader.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry Potter ftw. I read a handful of Snickets and they *felt* like children's books. I enjoy the HP series because it didn't feel like I was reading a book for kids all the time, but a book series that just happened to have a child/teen as the protagonist.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
I try to make it to chapter breaks or at least those pauses that come up. Sometimes I do pass out with a book on my face...
"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
Should never judge a book by where it starts, but where it ends. Just because it starts on a stormy night doesn't mean the rest of the book won't be sunshine and roses. And fairy tales can get awfully twisted.
Buy or borrow?
Uh - librarian. :P
New or used?
If I buy a book, I read it and want to own it so I get it brand new. Though I have no problem with taking books that look interesting from our "used" pile at work and stacking them up by my desk at home.
Buying choice: book reviews, recommendations, or browse?
I usually listen for recommendations or see what other people are reading.
Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Tidy, but not too tidy. I like to get a feel for where the characters will end up, but I almost prefer that the author not spell it out...just in case my vision is a little different. The last few books I've enjoyed have stayed pretty vague but tied up most of the loose ends.
Morning reading, afternoon reading, or nighttime reading?
I have one book for breakfast, another for my lunch break, and one by my bed. Usually the one by my bed gets the most attention, though I'm usually pretty good about reading during my solo lunch breaks (Mon, Sat, sometimes Tues)
Stand-alone or series?
I prefer standalone books or short series. Trilogies work well for me, since I tend to forget things. That's my only problem with HP, can't remember half the stuff from the book and I'm too slow a reader to go back and re-read the books when I have so many new books to read for the first time!
Favorite series?
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
Favorite children's book?
I don't actually remember them very well but I know I enjoyed 'Bunnicula' and it's sequels by James Howe, Charlotte's Web, and Roald Dahl's stories.
Favorite YA book?
I didn't start reading YA until this past year (and I'm not really in the YA book category anymore since *most* of the titles are targeted to 7th grade and up). BUT I love love LOVE Markus Zusak's 'The Book Thief" and Scott Westerfeld's 'Uglies' trilogy. Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
Markus Zusack 'I Am the Messenger' (unless you're in Australia and then it's just 'Messenger' I think...)
Favorite books read last year?
A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, Peeps by Scott Westerfeld, Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell (non-fiction!), Pride of Baghdad by Brian K Vaughan (graphic novel)
Favorite books of all time?
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Least favorite book you finished last year?
Finished? Hm. I hardly ever finish books I don't like haha. 'Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl' really did not go down well with me.
What are you reading right now?
Thunderstruck by Erik Lawson, A Hole in my Life by Jack Gantos, Runaways: Parental Guidance by Brian K Vaughan
What are you reading next?
Lots of Non-Fiction because I'm working on a non-fiction readers advisory program for the fall and need to pick out some books! I have 'Bringing down the house', 'the golden spruce', and several other titles piled up next to my bed.
Favorite book to recommend to an eleven-year-old?
Eleven? What is that 4th or 5th grade? Um...depends on if they are a reader or not *goes into librarian mode* Roald Dahl works for both boys and girls - especially with the movie tie-ins. Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Lois Sachar is a fun read but that might be too young...
Favorite book to reread?
Anything by Douglas Adams or Christopher Moore
Do you ever smell books?
Yes...when they are brand new...so good. Though don't smell not new books, especially if any of your patrons smoke P.U.
Do you ever read Primary source documents?
Nope.
