IM IN UR TOMBS, RAIDIN UR TREZUR
Jun. 13th, 2007 07:11 pmI did manage to get a copy of 'Tomb Raider'. I actually found it on Saturday. We ran out to Target to look for a baking scale for
jimithingy and we saw the game on their shelves. So then we ran over to Arundel Mills so I could use my gift card at Best Buy and then we could go to Bed Bath and Beyond and get a slightly higher quality scale than what was available at Target.
I've only played for about an hour but already I love it. I'm still a bit clunky with the controls - I've never gotten the hang of the L2,R2 buttons - but the game looks gorgeous and it's still a lot of fun. And it's old enough that I don't really remember where to go for certain quests, but at the same time, I remember locations and events (I knew that poor little Peruvian guy wouldn't survive the opening cut scene).
I keep having little flashbacks too. Tomb Raider was the game that really turned me into a hardcore gamer. My parents had an Atari, so I played with that. I had also played 'Wolfenstein', 'Doom', and even 'Heretic'. But even though those were First Person Shooters, I knew I was still a dude. Then Lara came around. Finally, I was kicking ass, taking names, and also a hot chick. It just felt so right, and it was fun. And yeah she was ridiculously proportioned, but she wasn't disgusting. (I find the Dead or Alive series, with the physics engines assigned to each boob to be a bit unsettling). The game was awesome, with its mix of puzzles and action. Lara was a mix of Indiana Jones and James Bond - searching for treasures, but a lone wolf with a license to kill.
I've never even bothered watching the movies. Heck, I didn't even acknowledge the existence of the model that Eidos used to dress up for Cons back when Lara was first around. Video Game Lara is the only one for me.

Date: 2007-06-13 11:56 pm (UTC)l2 and r2 buttons are pretty much the reason I don't play console games much anymore, I don't want to think, I want to button mash dammit, stop making it so complicated!
I like that description of Lara, now she just needs a fancy hat!

Date: 2007-06-14 01:10 am (UTC)I've noticed a lot of games don't bother with L1/R2 and such. Which is probably why I'm such a spaz with them. Plus, I still get confused when someone makes me try to tell my left from my right on the spot.
