Oh, this is just taunting me... see, I've been obsessed with wanting to try using Photoshop, or a like program to do arts lately. I don't know if I'll be able to *do* crap with it, but the idea won't get out of my head. A friend already said they'd let me try their PS7 to see what I think. I really want to know if it's something I'll actually keep using/get something out of, before making some huge $$$ investment on it. O_O;

GIMP is free and I can make comparable things on it as I did with Photoshop CS2. Paintshop Pro is what I use now, and that's cheaper than Photoshop as well.

Most of those programs have a free trial too, so you can go to the site and download a free 30 day trial to see if you like it.

Thanks, I'll give GIMP a try to start with! I've heard some good things about Paintshop as well, but that it's not as easy to do layers compared to Photoshop? I've also heard that CS2 wasn't the best version. A lot of people I've talked to are still using old versions of Photoshop, mostly 7, but a few still have 5.5. Oddly enough, while pricing the different versions (7 is still available for sale on-line) Photoshop 7 isn't a *whole* lot cheaper than the latest version CS3, but CS2, is significantly cheaper than either (I guess 7 held it's value better?) I've just been trying to pick the brains of people that have used the various programs as to why the difference. The only thing Adobe has the free trial for (that I could find) was the latest version CS3, hence the attempt at borrowing PS7 to try and see what the diff is and whether or not it would matter to me. I also need to hit up the library for some how-to books, as that may give me a better idea of what I'm looking for too. ^_^

Yeah they usually just do the newest for the trial. I prefer PSP and then GIMP over PS actually. I have worked with a few different versions of PS, but CS2 was the one I had for the longest.

There are a lot of comms on LJ too with tutorials, and you can pretty much adapt them back and forth. The most common for tutorials is Photoshop, but I got better when I just messed around myself and picked up a tutorial here and there to mess with. Plus asking people how they did certain things you liked. If they can remember (some of us can't since we were messing around. haha.) then they are a great resource.

I shall look at GIMP, thanks. The only thing Adobe has a free trial for though is the latest PS version, which is CS3, which I'll take a look at, but I may actually want an older version. Hence checking out PS7 from a friend too, though that may take a bit, since he just moved and can't find anything atm. lol =P
