[livejournal.com profile] demonqueen666 posted this on her lj, but I had to re-post here.

Rowling says Dumbledore is Gay

This apparently happened on Tuesday. I'm shocked I hadn't heard about it until now. As [livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest said to me, it's like the idea of your parents having sex. I never really thought about it either way (To paraphrase Buffy - he's old, it's gross!).

Still, kudos to Rowling for just saying it and not being all coy or clever or winking and nudging.

I guess if there was going to be fall out, it would have happened by now. Perhaps no one cares anymore. I know my interest in HP has dropped since I finished the 7th book...

oh brother- she probably didn't intend it this way, but that almost comes across as desperate, like she's wants the spotlight back for just a bit longer. I mean, why reveal this now? OTOH, there's a good chance that she did always think this and this is just the first time anyone's bothered to ask about Dumbledore's love life. Everyone's all into slashing Snape and whomever, but maybe people just don't think about Dumbledore "in that way", so it hasn't come up. Hard to say, since I'm not up on my HP slashfic.

I have to say that I'm not a fan of her tossing out all these tidbits that aren't in the books now that the series is finished. It just feels sloppy. Isn't great art supposed to be complete, with the stuff that is left open to interpretation left that way intentionally? Am I a big dork because I just implied that the HP books might be "great art"? I guess this is why I never watch outtakes- I like to see the finished product as complete.

Anyway, I had always assumed that the gay character was Slughorn. And what's with the thing at the end of that article about Neville marrying Hannah Abbott? Doesn't he hook up with Luna in the book? (the book is about 5 feet away from me right now, but I'm too lazy to check)

A few weeks after Book 7 came out, she said that Luna marries the son of the author of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

I'm a little indifferent about Rowling's making further announcements about characters. At least she's saying things during the book tour--she could be making random proclamations from her house... coming out of hiding/retirement to make EARTH-SHATTERING announcements about HP for attention. (I imagine that she would do this by literally running out of her house in a bathrobe and yelling to the world, "DUMBLEDORE IS GAY!!!")

Also, can you imagine the Encyclopedia entry for Dumbledore if she chose to reveal this info that way? It would read something like, "Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; helped Nicholas Flamel, acted as the mentor to Harry Potter, and defeated Grindelwald, for whom he was completely gay. No really, Dumbledore was gay. Seriously. So your Dumbledore/Grindelwald fic? Absolutely true."

I guess better late than never?

And were people actually writing Dumbledore/Grindewald fic?

And will they bother to keep writing it now that they know he is gay and its not quite as risque. They'll have to write about him with WOMEN to make it true slash fic, right?

Yeah, it was an odd thing to say. And really, I don't care haha. I did not harbor some deep hope that him and McGonagal would hook up in a flashback. And I was never into dumbledore slash anyhow (though now to actually slash him, wouldn't he have to be written with a female character?)

Yeah, I think I remember reading about a D/G fic on F_W after Book 7 came out.

And wow... that's an interesting point you have there. But I think that it would still be slash... I don't know though. I'm not terribly familiar with the nuances of fanfiction.
