oooh it cuts like a knife!
Nov. 25th, 2007 01:58 pmNow that 'Razor' has actually aired, I feel a bit more comfortable posting my thoughts :)
I say "spoilers" but really, how many parts of the show did we already see coming? Sort of an old tale - the new crew member that idolizes their captain and goes too far in the process, now haunted by guilt, sacrifices herself for the good of humanity. We knew Shaw was expendable because we had never seen her before.
So, yes, her story line was just there to fill the 2 hours. It was the plotlines going on around her that I liked. The whole Cylon missing link idea was curious. I'm hoping that all of this will come up again in season 4. It seems the only way to make 'Razor' an episode of the series and not just a Sci-Fi Channel Special to fill time between seasons, is to have the missing link, Cylons are using humans to make skin jobs? plot pay off in s4.
I was up in the air about Cain/Gina. On one hand, I was very amused that Six tricked Cain the same way she tricked Gaius - sex. On the other hand, I get tired of the strong woman = lesbian that happens so often in TV. But BSG has enough strong women that are straight so it's not as annoying as it can be in other shows. I think Cain/Gina also was there to humanize Cain. Not just because she was romantically involved with someone, but because when she gets her heart stamped on, she goes into a downward spiral that results in the murder of the civilians. It also makes Gina's murder of Cain in s2 a bit more poignant. Not just a crew member betraying a captain, but a lover as well. And, as we've seen with Caprica Six and Sharon, skin jobs have feelings too! So Gina might have felt something for Cain (though I'm sure by the time s2 rolled around it was utter disgust since Cain did practically order her commander to rape Gina).
And I loved the fact that the Classic Cylons made a comeback. I never watched the original show, but I know what it looked like so I was highly amused. Plus, something about them is just so creepy when you think of them as this rogue group, flying around the edge of space grabbing humans to do...whatever the heck they were doing.
The old dude in the bathtub, was he the same old dude that Gaius talked to before? Didn't someone talk to a Cylon-in-a-tub? Oh my memory is going! This is what happens when they make you wait years between seasons and don't release the DVDs in a sane amount of time!
Oh and Starbuck will be the downfall of humanity. Says a Cylon. Like I trust a Cylon. Pffft. Doesn't really matter what he said because no one of importance heard him. Oh, and I'm totally on the Starbuck is NOT a Cylon side of things. It would just be...it's like having the characters wake up from a dream at the end or pulling the "I am your father!" line. It's been done, everyone would see it coming. No, she is not the final Cylon. She's a goddess! Yes, that seems much more plausible.
Also, every time Lee was upset about the way things were going,
jimithingy and I would make eating jokes. I was hoping for fat!suit Lee, but then I realized it was too early for his binge eating. Still, it can be highly amusing to pretend he's mumbling "screw you dad...I'm gonna go eat a donut or 12" at the end of some scenes.
Speaking of not taking things seriously,
jellibean and I were enjoying the Quiznos promos. Geez louise, I'm so happy I *ahem* acquired a copy of Razor through alternate means for my original viewing. The stupid sub ads and on-screen pop ups really ruin the mood. UGH! How can you meditate on the relevance of what you just saw when Quiznos pops up and says "Cain and Gina are lesbian lovers! That's Hot! And so are Quiznos Toasty SUBS!" It just breaks the mood!
All in all, I enjoyed 'Razor'. I had missed the screw of BSG so it was nice to see most of them (waits while
demonqueen666 flails over lack of Gaius and Gaeta). I came for some Starbuck action and I got it. She was her classic badass self. So I was happy. Old school Cylons make me giddy. We had some nice space battles. A few fun facts about Cylon family history (which will hopefully pay off in season 4!) and a bit more info on Cain that might make re-watching season 2.5 a different experience than it was the first time through. What more could we really expect from a show that was trapped from the start in a very specific time frame? A time frame that we've already moved past, not juts a little, but a whole season!
Yes, I'm going to buy the DVD to see the "extended" cut and bonus features. Why not. It's part of the BSG story and with only one season left, I think I'll be a completeist with the DVD collection.
