Actually, this is probably the least I've been interested in the Oscars in awhile. I haven't seen very many of the best picture nominees, the one I have seen I didn't think was all that great, the movies I have seen that are nominated for major awards I know won't win. So I'll post some half-assed predictions/comments now...

Best Actor In Leading Role:
I saw: The Visitor, Benjamin Button
Of those two, I'd give it to Richard Jenkins in The Visitor
But I doubt he will get it, I'm getting Pitt, Langella, or Penn.

Supporting Roll:
I saw: Tropic Thunder, Batman
Of those two: Okay - first of all Heath should have been in the LEADING ROLE nominees - The Joker had as much screen time as Batman...so anyway, it's not fair to put these two up against each other. Ledger should get best actor, Downey should get best supporting. But no one asked me.
But they will probably give it to Ledger not because they actually watched 'Dark Knight' but because they feel bad for snubbing him all these years.

Best Actress:
Yeah, I didn't see any of these movies...

Best Supporting Actress:
I saw: Benjamin Button....not a very difficult role to play
I want Amy Adams to win because she is cutest...how's that? LOL!

Animated Feature:
I saw: Wall-E and it should win. There's no way the other two are as timeless.
Also, this category is BS - it was solely created to avoid having animated pictures be in the best picture category. Because they know Pixar would kick ass every year they made a movie.

Directing:
I saw: CCoBB
[livejournal.com profile] bittertwee saw Slumdog Millionaire and worships the celluloid it was printed on.
If they give it to Danny Boyle for Slumdog, then they will give Best Picture to the craptastic CCoBB...

I don't care much either, except that I want to see Milk win a couple.

"Because they know Pixar would kick ass every year they made a movie."
Or Studio Ghibli.

Seriously, I think Hayao Miyazaki's genius is one reason they created the category. Even though his work could also go into Foreign Film , it *is* always picked up by Disney/Buena Vista.

IMHO, Ghibli and Pixar are the best in their respective subgenres: painterly animation and pure, clearly-computerized animation.

I think because it takes so long for animators, like Pixar and Ghibli, to make a film up to their standards, not only is it visually stunning, but 9 times outta 10, the script is better than any live action flick out there. I mean, the romance of Wall-E was far more convincing than CCoBB.

ha- Ok, so I liked Slumdog, but so did the rest of the world so it's not like I was a lone voice crying in the wilderness. I was just on your case because I couldn't believe you hadn't seen it, what with it being Danny Boyle and all. I had heard that the film was more of a lock for best picture than any film in a long time, so I wasn't too worried. The only competition I heard of was Milk, partly due to Brokeback guilt, and also because it's quite good from what I've heard (I haven't seen it, but I think I might, even tho I'm not so crazy about bio-pics).

And even tho I loved Slumdog, I was more excited to see Danny Boyle get some recognition- I like his films- his style, optimism, and the stories he picks, and I like how he just kind of does his thing and he hit the jackpot with this one. I also like the rags to riches story of the film itself.. I don't know the whole story (and yeah, I could look this up RIGHT NOW rather that go on about something based on tidbits I've heard from friends, but I'm too lazy, and at work at the moment), but from what I've heard, the film was going straight to video (because everyone knows that a cast of unknowns and subtitles means no American will watch the film), and then it somehow got rescued at the last minute.

I can't wait to see what Danny Boyle is up to next. And Dev Patel..mmm
