tv thoughts: BSG
Mar. 1st, 2009 09:49 pmI think that Someone to Watch Over Me is going on my list of favorite episodes of BSG. First, it was Kara-centric, always a plus for me. Also, it managed to catch me off guard in several ways. And you gotta love the soundtrack.
I will be honest - the Boomer twist totally caught me off guard. I knew Chief was going to do something stupid, but I figured Boomer was actually being honest, that she had seen the error of her ways. HA!
I think the best part of this show was the bait & switch of the script. We, as an audience, were so focused on the Kara/Piano Man storyline, waiting for the other shoe to drop and to have her realize that was her father, something we all knew almost immediately, that it gave the Boomer/Tyrol plot a chance to totally sideswipe us. Bravo BSG writers!
Speaking of, I just listened to Ronald Moore's podcast and he said the Helo/(He thought it was Athena)Boomer moment was actually the twisted idea of the director. Originally Helo just kissed her on the cheek and went about his business. Moore said he read the idea and was surprised he didn't think of it first. This moment reminded me a lot of Riley/(He thought it was Buffy)Faith sex scene from Who Are You - the fact that Faith had no problem sleeping with Riley but it also had reprocussions for her because Riley actually made love to her as opposed to all the one night stands she had experienced before. Now, I know Boomer had slept with Tyrol, but that was before she knew she was a Cylon. We assume she's sleeping with Cavill, BUT - does he really love her? No. Helo loves Athena so what happened in the locker room was a passionate moment between husband and wife, something she's never experienced. It will be interesting to see if it has any effect on her (or if it just makes Athena shoot her without hesitation later on).
Um...how many times has Hera been kidnapped now? They need to tag that girl so an alarm goes off every time she leaves or enters a room. Like, RFID her or something. Poor kid. Did she not recognize her own mother or do we assume that whatever Boomer had in the drink bottle was drugged? She did shove it into Hera's face pretty quickly.
Even though I knew he was Starbuck's father right away, the moments between the two were still very well done, well acted. I still assume he is Daniel, our missing Cylon. Or maybe not, perhaps he is Daniel's offspring? Hm...his name did start with a "D" though.
Poor Tyrol. As I mentioned before, he is the one member of the final five that seems to be walking a weird line between his old life and his new life. He has no focus. Will this betrayal push him too far? I was worried that when Roslin signed the extradition for Boomer that he would leave with her, but the fact that he didn't means he's stilla company man loyal to Adama, at least a little bit. And now that she did betray him, will it push him back to his human family, his BSG family and away from the Final Five?
I second
jellibean in saying I want a copy of the Watchtower-BSG Remix 2.0 (now with more piano). Moore said that we will find out the story behind Watchtower before the show ends.
Wow, where is this all going to end up? Three episodes. The fleet must find Hera and save her! Which means a showdown with Cavill & Co.! Sam needs to wake up and Starbuck needs to finally figure the rest of her destiny. And they all need to find a home.

I'm half-convinced that everyone's just going to blow up in the end. Maybe the Centurions will go apeshit and kill everyone except for the Final Five, who will be threatened into making more skinjobs so that the Centurions can enslave them as payback for what the skinjobs did to them.

Date: 2009-03-03 12:56 am (UTC)while that ending is totally fucked up, I wouldn't be surprised if they did that. Sad, but not surprised haha. There's no way it will have a super-mega-happy ending.
This is not TwilightI fear for the lives of a lot of our mains.(no subject)
Date: 2009-03-03 02:51 pm (UTC)Dammit, I fell for Boomer too. Bad Boomer! >_< Poor Chief. And I think everyone is in agreement that what was in the sippy-cup was drugged. I totally called Hera's drawing as music notes too. =P Or at least on my second guess. My knee-jerk when Kara asked her if they were stars, I jokingly said "yeah, it's the star-chart leading to a habitable planet! lolz" until she handed it to her and I saw it better. I was like huh, that looks like... sheet music?
I was totally leaning towards the "Kara's dad was actually a Daniel model" too. I thought it was a crazy theory until I looked on-line and saw a bunch of other people saying it also. It would explain his disappearence. And a lot of the freaky shit Kara does. Of course that would mean *she* was the first hybrid. Hhmmm... Also, so glad she started playing her dad's tape for Sam! I thought that as soon as Helo gave it to her! Yay! =)
I was very surprised back when they did the final five vote to stay or go that Chief said go. I figured it would be a case of Tory and Ellen wanting to go and Saul and Tyrol wanting to stay, with coma-boy Sam being the deciding vote that couldn't vote so they'd be deadlocked. But I guess since they already *knew* which way Sam would vote, someone else had to say go, or there would be no tension. meh It's just that at that point, he was still pretty loyal to Adama and Galactica (still calling Adama "sir" so cute) and then being reinstated as Chief. But I could see him wanting to cut and run *after* they basically signed Boomer's death sentence when he still thought she'd changed. Now, I don't know what is going to happen there. I'm sure they're going to figure out he's the one that switched her with the other Eight. =( That is not going to go well for him at all.

That's a very good point, and it certainly worked on me! Nicely played, show.
I'm pretty scared for Tyrol now, I can't see any way out of this that ends well for him. There's no way that they won't know it was him that helped Boomer. And an interesting comparison to Faith and Riley, I might be a little bit wary if she make a turnaround based on Helo's affection though. It's already happened with Athena and I'm not sure what the show would be saying if they went the same way with Boomer.
Sam needs to wake up and Starbuck needs to finally figure the rest of her destiny. And they all need to find a home.
Yes. This. And hey, look! It's almost time for them to show us what comes next. :)
