So, I watched both Once Upon a Time and Grimm this weekend. I felt that both pilots were very strong and also felt it was really unfair that the two shows were being compared. I mean, yes they are both "what if fairy tales were real?" plots, but they take those plots in very different directions.
Once Upon a Time felt more like the Fables comic book series, transplanting classic fairy tale characters into our world via a spell. At it's core is the mystery of how Emma is going to change everything, defeat the evil queen and get Snow White et. al. back to their world. Oh, and what Henry's deal is because since he is Emma's son, you figure he must have powers as well.
Grimm is more of a Buffy/Supernatural type show, a spin on the demon-hunter tale where all the "demons" are characters from fairy tales - not transplanted from a magical world but fairy tales were written about them to explain their existence. Grimms are just a line of demon hunters who can see these creatures in their true form.
Anyway, strong pilots does not necessarily mean it will be a good show, so I'm going to see how the next few episodes go, where they have to put their plots into action. Those will be the real test. I think Once Upon a Time has a more original story in some ways, but we all know that I'm a sucker for a good demon-hunting show. Plus, if Grimm plays its card right, they could put enough little twists in the story to make it unique.
The Walking Dead has been AWESOME so far. Yeah, I know it's only been two episodes but still...AWESOME. The premiere episode kept me on the literal edge of my seat and I don't think I breathed properly for the entire hour, so freakin SCARY and INTENSE. The second episode was just made of heartache and pain and had some beautiful acting from Andrew Lincoln and Jon Bernthal. I do love the changes they have made from the comic, but it's almost more exciting when you can see the new plots intersecting with things from the series...because you're really not sure what they are up to then!
Happy Endings - OMG this is my new favorite show. Toss up between this and Community right now...though I feel Happy Endings has been more consistent with the funny than Community, at least for it's second season. You can really tell some of the writers are from Arrested Development because the humor just moves so quickly. (OMG LOL I just went to verify that I was not making this up and at least one of the writers has worked on all three shows...so there we go.)
Er, and what happened to New Girl? I mean, it wasn't that great but it amused me...seems to have disappeared...oh well.
And I'm totally behind on Amazing Race because it's not on Huly so I don't get email reminders every week to watch it!!!!

Date: 2011-11-01 08:57 pm (UTC)ALjfalkjdalfksj Happy Endingssss! I feel bad comparing it to Community but you're definitely right about the consistency thing.
I am loving Once Upon a Time, and not just because of Raphael Sbarge, lol! Though if he hadn't been in it idk if I would have ever watched it. But omg, so in love. I was worried it was going to be er, kind of lame. Some parts are definitely cheesy, but not really in a bad way. I especially love Emma! I think I underestimated the writing on the show, because it's so much better than I thought it would be.
