Watching Pearl Jam Twenty...wow...I've always admired the band even if I did get into them pretty late (a big huge thank you to [livejournal.com profile] sideflip1 for that. She both helped get my hands on some live shows AND got me my ticket to my first live show AND showed me how awesome Pearl Jam fans are). I still remember a friend in middle school trying SO HARD to get me into Pearl Jam. He made me a mix tape of some of the more mellow PJ songs (daughter, better man, tremor christ) so that was all I knew for a long time. I can't even quite remember what turned me on to them...it was sometime in college...hm...still, the show I saw that first time, bouncing on my feet the entire 2 hours...so awesome...

ANYWAY - just watching all of this old footage...I love watching these guys get sucked into the music. When they close their eyes and just let the music flow out of them, so pure and emotional. Not playing for the crowd, just playing. And I love how well spoken they all are. For me, it's important that I can respect the band to be a fan. Pearl Jam definitely consists of some very smart, complex guys. Watching this and seeing how it all went down just makes me love them more.

God, I miss live music. I miss seeing shows every weekend in little coffee houses. I miss dancing for two hours and singing along. I signed up for a bunch of email lists recently so hopefully I won't miss out on the tours by some of my current bands that I enjoy.

Ugh, this makes me want to see Pearl Jam live again SO BAD.

Guess I'll just crank up the PJ mix tomorrow on my iTunes and rock out. :)

Awww.. You should get back into live music. We'll have more to talk about :)

For some reason this year my tolerance for standing through shows by bands I don't really know has gone way up. Used to be I'd need to know I'd recognize at least a couple songs, but now if it's the right genre and not an obnoxious venue, I'm quite happy to be there for multiple sets even if I don't know the bands. I have to keep reminding myself of this now that winter's here.. It's too easy to talk myself out of going out when it's dark, late and cold. At least I know once I get there it's always worth it. Actually, I'm facing that dilemma tonight.. There's a band I wouldn't mind seeing about 15 minutes away, and the opener sounds good, and if I leave right now (10:30) I should be ok.. But I was out Tuesday and will be at a show with a friend tomorrow, and I'm really sleepy.. hmmm.. it's not looking good..

In other news, I was thinking about doing a noise-pop Xmas compilation, first just for my niece, but then I thought why not burn a copy for friends? (or I guess, just post it somewhere, but then how is that a gift?). And now I have to do it because while walking home tonight I came up with the perfect name-- "Noise to the World", which, when I googled it later, I was surprised to find wasn't super done-to-death. (ps. I know you'll be disappointed, but the Feelies won't be on it)

Update: Well, I missed the show, but that's ok because I got to watch the Boston Police deploy their emergency team to arrest a sink at Occupy Boston. Yep, a sink-- I know I feel safer. Hilarious. Hopefully Occupy will still be there when you visit-- we'll have to stop by.

The problem is Maryland's music scene, by which I mean, it had none. I spent most of college driving up to Philadelphia, New Jersey, and down to Virginia to find the kind of music I like. If Jammin Java wasn't so far away, I'd hang out there every weekend, but it's the wrong way round on the beltway. The kind of music I enjoy just doesn't have a strong following in Maryland, I guess :-\ Also, we just don't have any decent venues. When I was in college, I used to fantasize about starting up my own coffee house/concert venue because I was so sick of driving to Bryn Mawr.

You know how I feel about mix CDs - BRING IT ON!!!!! :) I prefer getting the actual CD but I guess you could upload it somewhere...reminds me, I need to do my annual card post, I have most of the mix figured out now.
