2011 - the movies
Dec. 29th, 2011 12:07 amI don't think I kept very good track of what movies I saw this year, but I think I did a better job than last year! I have 28 movies on my list that were new-to-me in 2011. Here are some of my favorites:

The King's Speech - My favorite movie of the whole year, which is sad since it came out in December of last year. But still, I don't think I've loved a movie so instantly in a long time.
True Grit - Another 2010 release that just blew me away (pun intended?). Great script + amazing actors = one to watch again and again.
Nowhere Boy - Even if you're not a total Beatle fangirl like me, it's hard not to enjoy this story of a young man, imperfect as any other, struggling to find himself.
The Trip - Saw this with
bittertwee and
simontrueheart. Had not heard of it before that, but really enjoyed the mockumentary/bromance of it all as these two estranged friends drive all over, trying out fine foods and posh restaurants. It ends on an oddly bittersweet note, but worth watching...but only if you have some delicious food to eat afterwards.
Planet of the Apes - saw this with
andy_wolverton and I think he will agree, this movie was far better than it had any right to be! It was my favorite movie of the summer (yeah, that's right HP7p2, I say FAVORITE of the SUMMER!). Of course, most of the credit goes to Andy Serkis for putting on the green suit and giving Cesear a heart and soul. Even though it is a prequel, no knowledge of the original film is needed (apart from getting a few side jokes) and the story is compelling enough that you are on the edge of your seat the entire time. The writers and filmmakers avoided the easy plot twists and gore and just gave us a solid popcorn movie.
The Muppets - okay, you know I was spazzing all over about this. Saw it opening day with
maybedeadcat,
destertale, and
blu_harvest And it might not have been perfect, but it was just what I needed. I needed to see The Muppets being their Muppety selves. And there's something about the ridiculous grin on Jason Segel's face the ENTIRE MOVIE that is hard not to love. Mahna-Mahna...
Source Code - saw this on DVD. It was like a classic short sci-fi story, a Twilight Zone/Outer Limits episode. Short and simple, but perhaps it achieved a certain amount of perfection by keeping it simple. Great take on the whole "time travel meets groundhog day" plotline.
Bridesmaids - OMG this movie! I LOL'd so much. I watched it with
faeriesfolly and it really is the kind of movie you want to watch with your lady friend. Kristen Wiig and all the girls were HILARIOUS. John Hamm stole every scene he was in as the digusting boy-toy. And I had no idea Chris O'Dowd was in it so that was a great surprise!

The best movie I saw this year was probably The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Thank you. Seriously. THE BEST. ♥
