orangerfulFinally watched the second episode of season 2 last night. I have to say, this season is not quite as intriguing to me as the first. I think it's because the "haunted asylum" is so cliche and so far they haven't thrown anything into the mix that surprises me. Last year was weird and had lots of WTF moments, but it was also genuinely surprising what twists and turns it all took. So far, most of the big reveals have left me kinda "meh"
So, yeah, I knew the kid wasn't the "bloody face" guy and the reveal that it is most likely the doctor just seemed kind of "yeah, that makes sense". And we knew the lesbian teacher wasn't going to survive because it would mean the other girl had no way to escape the asylum. Plus it will make her feel even worse about tattling on the two "friends" she had in the asylum...
...it has come to my attention that I have apparently learned NO ONE'S name this season. What's up with that? Maybe it's because so many are referred to by their title rather than real name -- Sister, Doctor, Father...
ANYWAY, yeah, and the exorcism didn't reveal anything we couldn't guess. Oooh our holier-than-though head nun was actually a bit of a wild woman? SHOCKING! And I was scratching my head as to WHY they even had the episode, until the demon transferred in to the other nun at the last minute.
The alien thing still has me scratching my head...just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the show so exactly what is that all about? Alien abduction doesn't strike me as horror, tends to veer off into the direction of silly (in fact, every time they do a flash to the "alien examination", all I can think of is that episode of Supernatural when the guy thought he was abducted by an alien that made him dance to 'Lady in Red'...)
The addition of Zachary Quinto's character is also intriguing as the "scientist" in the midst of a spiritual event. But how can he keep in Scully mode after that possessed kid clearly said something that he acknowledged as truth and something no one else would know.
I'm still going to keep watching though. At least this week, when the credits popped up at the end, I did go "AW MAN!!!!" so that is always a good sign. I'm hoping that the writers will eventually surprise me. They need something twisted, like the ghost maid or the guy in the black gimp suit to kick the WTF up to 11. Right now, it's a moderate 6.
