Verge
article on Facebook and Tumblr

Thing I found most intriguing? This quote:

Part of Tumblr’s success is no doubt due to that fact that it’s a place
where you can cultivate two or more identities, whereas on Facebook you’re
stuck with just one: the real you. "It’s a site where you can find people
that are like you and you can feel less alone,"

Pretty much what we've all been doing on Livejournal for AGES now. :) But
everything old is new again. I wonder if this will be the pattern of the
Internet and social media from now on, the rise and fall for the desire to
separate your online identity from your real one.

Every time I see something that lets you sign on using your FB account on one of my online sites I just cringe. There is no way in hell I'd want the folks on my FB to go tromping through my "real" online life. FB's there to remind me of family member's birthdays and give me pictures of nephews and nieces in far off states.

I'm thankful that I never got into the whole MySpace and Facebook thing. I've always found those sites to be rather skeevy and untrustworthy.

The thing about sites like LiveJournal/Tumblr/etc is that it allows you to be yourself without the judgment from other people IRL. Isn't that why people join such sites to begin with? As an escape and to connect with other people all around the world with similar interests? I can bond and squee with someone over a fandom I just discovered, while IRL still having to explain what fandom is to others. While trolling and perverts exist everywhere on the Internet, places like Facebook are more likely to have idiots who just won't shut up, and unfortunately these are people who you probably know and communicate with in your daily lives. Whereas on Tumblr and LJ all you have to do is block/defriend them and never have to worry about them ever again.

Also, as nice as it is to reconnect with old friends that you've lost in touch with over the years, I don't want random people from my past who I have no interest in reconnecting with to come and find me. Fuck that.

I think in 5-10 years the book on the rise and fall of facebook is going to be fascinating.

And the more I think about it, it's the real name thing that's the core of the problem. Social networking is only fun if it's quick and easy, and once you have everyone you know from every aspect of your life on board, because there you are under your real name and they found you, it makes the whole thing way too complicated because you either have to over-censor every post, or you have to use difficult, constantly changing, and untrustworthy privacy controls. You can see why the kids hit "reset" and joined tumblr with a fake name.

Now if tumblr could only monetize!

But isn't monetization (which is apparently not a word?) the kiss of death? Sites are cool when they are free and "for the people" but as soon as the bottom line starts to show, people get angry. How does one take their internet sensation and earn money? I feel like we, as internet users, feel like we are entitled to a social network that does not ask for our money in any way.

Oh.. you are living dangerously.. I have been doing a TON of reading about this very subject! :) I will spare you though, except to say that I think this is a huge problem, it's not sustainable, and if we're going to have any prayer of saving the economy at all (not to mention retaining jobs in the creative space), we're going to have to give up a bit of our "freedom" on the internet and this bizarre attitude that it's not ok to charge for things.

OH! I agree! I have gotten to this odd point where I *want* to pay for things LOL. I mean, I still wait for a deal (like those $3 mp3s on Amazon) but still. How do we instill that into the generation that has grown up with torrents and streaming and free to play games? Not saying that it's a generational thing, but just conversations I've had with our teen Pages and Vincent make me think that the desire to pay is not there.

I like Facebook for when I want to just see what my real life friends are up to but I really don't like that every site keeps wanting to link into it. My fandom life and my real life are quite fine on their own thank you. If and when the streams cross I want a say in it. There's no way that I want everyone on my FB wandering through my LJ or Tumblr account.

I do the same thing you do with Facebook, except that I keep touch with cousins as well. And oh, am I sick of FB wanting to get into everything else I'm on from Goodreads to YouTube.

Another part of Facebook's "coolness" problem with teens is that it's now what teens' parents and grandparents use. Eeeww.

I think you're onto something with your idea about the rise and fall of various social media.

I think another issue is that on FB aside from the lack of anonymity is that now we have parents and grandparents on it too, so everything they say their entire family hears.
