Took my copy of Sorry! over to [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat's tonight and we played a game with his daughter. He pointed out that my game was so old the cards were not "gender neutral" in their language, referring to each game piece as "your man" and not "pawn". Wonder if it's worth anything?

I used to spend summers playing card games and board games with my grandma and my aunt. When we played SORRY! I had a habit of whacking her piece across the board anytime I landed on a slide tile and then saying "SORRY!". She would say "yeah, you're gonna be sorry!" -- the games got pretty intense.

Our other big summer activity was Progressive Rummy. We would play this for HOURS! It's a card game with 7 different hands, each building on each other. You have to have a certain thing to play before you can do anything else:

First hand - 2 sets of 3 of a kind
Second - one set of 3 and one run of 4 (run must be all same suit)
Third - 2 runs of 4 (all same suit)
Fourth - 3 sets of 3 of a kind
Fifth - 2 set of 3, 1 run of 4
Sixth - 1 set of 3, 2 runs of 4
Seven - 1 run of 7, 2 sets of 3

The last hand got pretty ridiculous. My mom actually made us card holders because you ended up having SO MANY CARDS in your hand for the last round since it took forever to build hand.

You would track the score for each hand. Like golf, the less points you had the better. Winner went out first so they had zero. Then you added up all the cards. 2s were wild so they were the worst, like 20 points.

I have many fond memories of sitting around their dining room table, playing this card game. They were my Dad's parents and sister, lived in Florida for the first chunk of my life, then moved back to Michigan, then to Maryland. For some reason, they let me swear a little bit when I was at their house (and my parents were not around). This was, like, the special thing about going to their house, I could swear a little bit (mostly just "SHIT!" but when you're 10, that's pretty crazy!). So anytime I would lose a game or a hand, I'd say "oh shit!" along with my aunt and grandma LOL. Yeah, I was a WILD CHILD!

I think I might make my other 100 Challenge a "random things about me" theme so I can just post whatever! I feel like sometimes I get so caught up in blogging about fandom, I forget to talk about myself as a person!

Anyway, while scrolling through available Rock Band songs the other night with [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat, I noticed there was a Reba McIntire track pack and I was reminded that, some random period of my childhood...must have been in late elementary school...I had a Reba obsession.

I can't remember why it started. I'm wondering if my 6th grade friend listened to her (Tara Kurtz, where are you now?). But, wow I think I spent an entire summer checking out all the Reba CDs from the library, making a cassette mix, and sitting in the backyard, singing along. I probably haven't listened to any Reba in a long time (probably not since I worked at WINX, the country radio station), but as soon as Rock Band played the 5 second preview of "Fancy", I realized all those lyrics were stored somewhere in my brain.

I'm kind of tempted to check out the CDs from the library again. At least the early stuff.

Other musical phases I went through (so you can tell how cool I was):

The all Andrew Lloyd Webber summer -- my friends took me to see Phantom of the Opera and I literally lost 6 months of my music life just listening to everything he had ever written. From the greatest hits, like Cats and Joseph, to the almost barf-worth "Love Changes Everything" to the well-it-was-an-interesting-concept of "Sunset Boulevard". (Yes, I listened to the musical BEFORE I ever saw the movie...if it was possible to have a crush on a voice, I had a crush on the male lead from that musical).

Disney Showtunes - I find this happens about once a year, where i just want to sing along to Disney songs ALL THE TIME! And it's been happening about once a year since Litter Mermaid came out and I wore that cassette OUT! (and, if my Disney Sing-A-Long party proved anything...I'm not the only one who does this!!!!)

Beatles - my most well-known musical fandom, you can click the tags to find the origin story. Needless to say, my obsession with this group in the mid-90s gave me an excellent background in classic rock, but made me miss out on most of the music that the average person from my generation knows! This is also why I have far too many Paul McCartney CDs than anyone should. I mean, he wrote some good stuff post-Beatles, but as far as entire albums that are awesome...yeah, not so much.

Pearl Jam & Dave Matthew Band - I know, feels weird to lump those two together, but they would be the two bands that brought me out of my "I'm only listening to Beatles forever now" world and gave me faith in modern singer/songwriters. I'm big on lyrics and performance and both of these groups know how to create both. Seeing them in concert during my first year of college (which was 1999/2000 so both of these bands had technically already "peaked") encouraged me to explore smaller artists too (after I listened to their entire catalog of music), which lead to my little stint in radio. It also opened me up to the world of "tape trading" before high speed internet took off. It was a fun subculture, I wish I had been a part of it sooner, but I'm glad I got to experience it!

So I was riding in my car today, listening to a book on CD (Hold Me Closer Necromancer) and I found myself...mouthing the words. Does anyone else do this?

I have always done this. I used to listen to the Star Wars Radio Drama on the bus while riding to school and I would put my head down and mouth the words along with the tape, acting out scenes in my head. I had a whole collection of tapes I did this with regularly - the audiobook of The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul, a recording of the pilot episode and "E.B.E." of X Files, a similar recording of the audio from the miniseries of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy...and maybe the musical episode of Buffy too, since for awhile I had that recorded from the TV when the thought of them actually putting out a CD seemed laughable.

Im not sure why I do it...its not the same as singing along, Im not making any sounds, though I can feel my face changing to act out the scene so Im in to it...

so yeah any else do random things like that?

(also I just noticed this keyboard for my iPad is lacking in an apostrophe key WTF)

(oh wait, I found out, it's just not int he proper QWERTY location so I keep hitting backspace instead of apostrophe)

(and I'm too lazy to go back and fix things right now...maybe later)
