Highlight of my evening:

Library Customer: *holding book from our shelf* This author will be in town
tomorrow but I won't get the book I bought until next week, can I just take
your copy to get signed?
Me: Um...no.
Library Customer: But I'll get you a replacement next week!
Me: You'll have to pay for the copy you take.
Library Customer: Yeah, it's like two dollars online.
Me: No, you'll need to pay the replacement fee which is the retail price of
the book.
Customer: I could just be dishonest and take it.
Me: That would be stealing.
Library Customer: Oh! I'm not going to argue with you! Thank you for
being so close-minded!!!
Me: You're welcome, goodnight.

The mind boggles. Exactly what point was she trying to make there?

I guess I was supposed to be proud of them for not just stealing the book in the first place? It was definitely one of those moments where I was like "I have no answer for this except NO, never ever never."

People do the same things with the newspapers. They ask to cut them up or take them because they are "the old ones". We keep them for a few months because people need them!

Entitlement is an ugly thing.

Indeed it is. We have had people complain about newspapers and magazines and the fact that they aren't allowed to check them out--only browse them while they're there. I understand wanting to be able to do something like that, but after the people in charge tell you "no?" That's it. You're done. You don't get to whine louder and have things go your way.

::sigh:: "Entitled" customers are the bane of my existence. If you're going to an author event either (a)buy the book well in advance, (b) see if you can buy it there, (c) bring a sticker they can sign and put it in the book or (d) do without and stop whining like a 3 year old.

Actually, re: that last bit, I've seen toddlers in the library behave more maturely than some adult customers.

Wow.

"I could just take it."
"Yeah and I could just call the authorities. We all have choices in life."

Yikes what a fool.

I'm pretty sure that person is not familiar with how libraries work at all. WTF.

Just buy a copy at the signing and then give your unsigned copy away as a gift. Easy solution.

co-signed. If they like the author enough to go to a signing, surely they can spring for two books and find something to do with the second. Or heck, return the one they ordered online and resolve to shop at bookstores in the future. Serves them right.
