We marathoned Season 1 of Veronica Mars this week. As much as I love and adore this show, this is actually the first time I have rewatched it all the way through. And considering season one aired almost ten years ago, my memory wasn't so great with most of the episodes.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1!!!
I still do not ship Logan/Veronica. I don't mind Logan as a character, but I do not like him and Veronica as a couple. They just don't do it for me. Maybe it's because I only trust him about as far as I can throw him (oh with your back you shouldn't be throwing anybody). I think the most frustrating thing about them is that Rob Thomas ships them, which pretty much means it's gonna be the winning team because, in his mind, Logan is good enough for Veronica. (while I adore the show, the love is mostly directed at the cast, not the creator).
And, as usual, this is NOT what the show is about, the core of the show is the mystery and it's annoying how much focus is put on pairing Veronica off with a boy.
On this second viewing, I am not sure how I felt about the way the "mystery" of her rape was resolved at the end of Season 1. It all happened really quickly and I felt sorta icky about the whole "well, they were both drugged and they used to date so it's okay" of the situation. Maybe it's because over the past ten years I've read more about rape culture and issues within our society when it comes to girls not realizing they have been raped or explaining away their rape because it was a "friend" (and the stats are in, most people are not raped by strangers, it's someone they know). The decision to have Logan drug Duncan as the "reason" for Duncan sleeping with Veronica felt sloppy, like they realized it still didn't quite work if we ever wanted to like Duncan again so they did that quick change. (and, again, why would Veronica have anything to do with a guy who thinks slipping his friend some illegal drugs is a good idea???????)
Other than that, I'm still pretty impressed by how this show stands up! Yeah, the cell phones are really out of date, as are the computers, but HEY school computers usually look old. And MacBooks are just a little bit thinner now. I doubt Veronica could do all her crazy searching on an iPad as efficiently as she does on a laptop. But just looking around my library every day, it appears that high schoolers still look the same, there are haves and have nots, and we can all read the news to know that life is still unfair. So, yeah, the mysteries hold up because rich vs poor is forever.
OMG the actors though! The kid from Breaking Bad, Jessica "Zero Dark Thirty" Chastain - and, of course, Max Greenfield. Even with the age difference, I was happy to ship Leo/Veronica. It's a doomed romance from the start (that's a huge different when you're 17 and 20...but if they met again...say in a MOVIE, that wouldn't be as big of an issue to me. The difference between 17 and 20 vs 27 and 30 is WAY different.)
(though, honestly, I'm of the opinion that NONE of the Men of Neptune are worthy of Veronica. Unless some miracles have occurred in the past ten years, I'd rather Veronica not end up with a townie.)
I was pleasantly surprised by how well this series still held up, ten years later. I was on the edge of my seat the last two episodes and started to tear up more than once during a few of the great Keith and Veronica moments. They are definitely up there with Joyce and Buffy and Lorelai and Rory when it comes to kids and parents on TV.
Onward to Season 2!!! Movie premieres March 14 so we gotta keep going at this pace be ready!

Date: 2014-02-25 03:43 am (UTC)YES WE JUST FINISHED DISC 2! Still hate Logan. Annoyed by Duncan. Dick is Dick and he amuses me but that is because only the stupid girl goes for him.
There is a midnight release but it's only at AMC theaters sooooo I'm thinking of throwing my own shindig. Check your email in a few. (oh wait, you're probably reading this in your email now...just act surprised when you see my email)

Date: 2014-02-28 03:56 pm (UTC)I did my season one and two rewatch a while back (I need to start season three) and I too was happy with how well the show holds up. Season one is still one of my favourite seasons of television out there.
I was not ever okay with the resolution of "they were both drugged it was okay" because Duncan realized what happened after and he left. Yes blah blah blah he thought they could be related but that was a really shady thing to do because he knew that she'd be wrecked to wake up alone and he did it anyway.

Date: 2014-03-01 06:23 pm (UTC)And if I am remembering correctly, there is more to Veronica's rape that comes up in Season 2, right? Which I will probably not be happy about. We only have 6 episodes left in that season so I suppose I will know soon. I just remember not being happy with the finale at all
