Remember how I was talking about Ender's Game last week and how it tried to stay true to the book but in the end could not reach that level because of the limitations of a movie versus a novel?

Yeah, well clearly The Giver is not going to have that "staying true to the book" problem. I've read this book, that trailer is NOT for the book I read.

Wow, this really looks like a studio exec went into a box, found the rights to the book and said "Hey, make this into Hunger Games for me" to some random intern.

Stephanie pointed out that Jonas is 12 in the book. TWELVE. Looks like they have aged him up a bit JUST so they can give him a bit of romance drama. Also, that last scene of the trailer is VERY SPOILERY WTF!!!!!!!

I don't think the power of Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep can save this one.

Well.

Um.

What?

I ended up reading this book several times (moved several times in the general age range that schools read this book). That trailer does not go well with my remembrance of the book. Also why was it in color?

Because the studio didn't have the guts to shoot it in black and white, I'm sure.

I always pictured a more earthy setting, less FUTURE and more The Village. Or at least not so The Capital.

(also, is it me or is there something hilarious about the girl telling KATIE HOLMES about a conspiracy to keep the population under control?)

Just that one nod to the book would have been nice. And so much more...dramatic. What exactly is he going to be given now?

Yes I'd always thought it was quaint and low tech. Not hovercrafts and sterile white rooms. Ugg. Gross.

STERILE! Thank you, that was the word my brain was scrambling for but the pirate battle going on behind me was too distracting (Tim is playing Assassin's Creed)

It is pretty darn hard to think in the middle of a pirate battle. Particularly if they are sexy pirates. I don't know anything about Assassin's Creed- are they sexy pirates?

Darn it. somewhere along the way I lost my Jack Sparrow icon. First movie, before Pirates turned into a horrible wreck. Have to use Jayne. He's kind of a pirate.

I suppose Edward Kenway is pretty sexy. (http://86bb71d19d3bcb79effc-d9e6924a0395cb1b5b9f03b7640d26eb.r91.cf1.rackcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/287392_Papel-de-Parede-Edward-Kenway-Assassins-Creed-IV-Black-Flag_1920x1080.jpg) I mean, for a pirate. I don't mind watching him run around the island while Tim is playing lol.

Jayne is totes a Pirate!

Edward is acceptable as a sexy pirate. I approve.

Jayne <3 I think I also used to have an Amy Pond as a pirate icon too. Why am I so out of pirate icons?

The first problem I see is it should have been filmed in black and white. That's the only in you get that his perception is changing--he starts seeing the color red. So that's A. Beyond that, what you said.

Yeah, I'm sure the studio was too scared to do b&w, probably didn't think it would be "hip" enough. Bleh. DOOMED!

I agree with everything above (except that I read the book only once, as an adult, because I'm old) Even without seeing the trailer, the movie is clearly full of WTFery.

Can't trust Hollywood with a beloved book.

Don't watch, it is pretty awful. I watched it at work with no sound and was like "this can't be that bad...can it?" and came home and watched with sound...and it got worse. SO, yeah, don't watch it.

I had a feeling that they would mess up this book once the movie came out. Just seeing some stuff about it I was like "Uhm yeah I don't remember that." The Giver would be such an awesome movie to stick with the book about. Why the hell ruin it?

It could be an awesome movie if it was made by people that actually read/loved the book. This clearly looks like a cash-in. **sigh** Maybe some day!!

The movie should be doing a Pleasantville type of feel with it being grey with splashes of color being introduced when Jonas begins to be exposed to the images The Giver gives him. It feels like it's the same director as The Host. I hope not ugh.
