To kick off Memorial Day weekend, I played my first ever game of Dungeons and Dragons!

It was actually really fun! It didn't help get over any childhood trauma or work through other problems as television would have me to believe. And it didn't make me want to worship the Dark One, as some Christian groups make it appear. It was pretty much just several hours of being completely goofy and trying to fight monsters.

There is a lot of math though, and as the night went on, I found it hard to decipher the rules because I was so sleepy! But we survived our first quest!

We also managed to work in a hike and a swim over the weekend. Sylvia wanted to rewatch Hunger Games since she had just finished the book and wanted to compare. She also wanted to watch Breakfast Club because she fell asleep during a slumber party and missed it. I hadn't seen it since I was in high school, so at least 15 years ago. I remembered being less than impressed then and...yeah I was underwhelmed again. I was never that angsty in high school so it didn't connect with me. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is my favorite of the John Hughes collection.

And now it's thundering outside...we're supposed to game tonight so hopefully the power doesn't go out!

I love both The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller, as well as Pretty in Pink. The only John Hughes teen film I'm not really a fan of is Sixteen Candles. It bored me, to be honest.

You know, I'm not even sure if I've seen Sixteen Candles all the way through...it was on cable so much back in the day I feel like I caught bits and pieces here and there but never sat down to watch it. Sounds like I didn't miss much though LOL :)

That's cool that you played your first D&D game. Glad it was fun.

"The Breakfast Club" is one of my absolute favorites. I saw it for the first time when I was about seven and somehow, even though I was nowhere near the age of the characters, I loved it. I like FBDO, too.

Wow, you watched that when you were 7? I was a little embarrassed by some moments in the movie since Tim's daughter is only 12. Mostly Judd Nelson's character making sexual/rape jokes toward Ringwald's character.

Yeah, my parents were never particularly strict/vigilant about what we watched. They actually took us to see "Platoon" (though that was more for them of course) when I was younger than that.

Also, the night I saw TBC we were at our neighbor's house because my parents were out and our young neighbor was my brother and I's babysitter. We watched TBC and this movie called "Disorderlies." But they made me go upstairs when they started to watch "Nightmare on Elm Street 3(?) That was off-limits because no matter how much I said I could take it, every time I watched I horror movie I would freak out afterwards and couldn't sleep.

Yeah, Syl kept saying telling me how they watched "The Conjuring" at a sleepover and I was really surprised since she seems to be on the sensitive side. She kept saying over and over she wanted to watch it with me so I took it out from the library today. Then Tim said that we couldn't watch it because apparently she *didn't* tell me she has been sleeping with her Mom the past week because she's freaked herself out.

I was never good with scary movies. We watched some other stuff. Looking at your icon reminds me of the time my parents went to watch "Excalibur" and learned the hard way that it is better to ask the child to leave the room/close their eyes then fast forward through a sex scene LOL. I love that movie but I think that was one of the most embarrassing moments for me and my parents LOL.

LOL. For some reason my parents didn't really care about me watching sex scenes. My mom got a little more freaked out about it when I was older, probably because she realized I might actually know what was going on at that point, but she never made sure to check what we watched. In fact, I was more squeamish about watching sex scenes around her, while she didn't care.

I still remember watching this movie with Kevin Costner, "No Way Out", when I was about six. There was a limo sex scene with Kevin Costner and Sean Young's character. I remember it was the first time I'd seen a woman's breast that wasn't my mother's. To this day that's the only thing I remember about that movie.

ah D&D, I played when I was younger before it became what it is now. (No not the 80s early--90s before the in depth stuff) my brother tried to get me to play after all the new rule, holy crap what is this shit happened and my attention span couldn't last. He still plays it though. Bless him.

LOVE Breakfast Club; used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. Need to watch it as an adult now.

LOL yeah I know nothing about the rules, I don't think I'd ever want to be a "Dungeon Master". But I liked running around and fighting the creatures. Our DM had clearly been playing a long time and kept referencing the changes to the rules and I would just stare blankly since I have no frame of reference.

One of the first things I thought while watching Breakfast Club was "okay, everyone looks to old to be in high school."

Never really wanted to revisit The Breakfast Club, but would like to revisit Pretty in Pink and Some Kind of Wonderful. I should own Ferris Bueller - the Blu-ray is always on sale cheap.

I'm just not angry enough to really enjoy Breakfast Club. I tended to spend me time rebelling against my classmates, trying to not fall into the stereotypes. I got along pretty well with my parents so the angst was just not there.

Ferris is streaming on Netflix so I don't really need to buy it right now but next time is a $5 movie I'll probably snag it. :)

Ugh believe me, I'll never understand the rules of DnD. My fiance plays it religiously, and I recently got into it. It's a lot of fun! I'm thrilled you started to play too! <3

I had a great time, though I would never want to DM! But playing my character was good fun. I sorta want to get a blank figurine to paint. The one I used was painted by the DMs 10 year old son LOL. I kept calling her my 80s Glam Gnome Rogue (https://flic.kr/p/nHHzDH). She was truly outrageous. ;-)

Yeah, lots of dice rolling and math (mostly probability and basic arithmetic) in D&D. The really fun parts are if you have a creative DM and fun friends to play with! Getting into character was one of my favorite parts.

I think it will take a couple games to really get the hang of my abilities and character but I think we did pretty well our first time out. :)
