I don't understand how The Martian is a comedy. I laughed at a few things but mostly it was a sci-fi drama.

Well, I haven't seen "The Martian" so can't comment on that, but there's absolutely no way "Fury Road" could be considered a comedy. Like I said haven't seen TM, but from the trailers it seemed that there were a few comedic scenes. There's nothing like that in FR.

I've always believed that awards were bullshit because it mainly is a popularity contest, and the academy has already picked who was going to win anyway regardless and it's all just for show, but this further proves what a joke the whole thing is and how they truly don't care.

It's like the time when Lorde won an award for best rock artist, even she was baffled by being in the category since her style of music isn't even rock.

Perhaps they didn't know how to categorize The Martian because it wasn't a ~deep indie film that tried too hard for award season, and even though I never saw it I know that it was definitely more lighthearted than most, but it certainly wasn't a comedy. It deserved to be in the Drama category. As for Mad Max: Fury Road, they really have no excuse there. That is straight up action/scifi. I mean, the entire film is one long epic car chase, even based on the trailers for goodness sakes. Like, the fuck?
