I was totally unfamiliar with the SeriousEats.com blog Food Lab but I saw the new book reviewed somewhere and it sounded fascinating. I just got a copy in at the library and it is GORGEOUS! Not only is it full of basic recipes and tips on how to make them, it also includes the SCIENCE behind the cooking, which can help down the road when I want to start experimenting with food and cooking my own way.

I don't really buy cookbooks because I tend to find all my recipes online, but I am thinking this book might need to live at my house.

If you are trying to learn to cook or just improve your cooking skills, you might want to check out this book or the original blog.

Lol, you - reading all the things on my list :p I have this one on my Amazon wishlist, but think I'm on the ebook waiting list at the library too.

I finished Pax - I'm so on the fence! I think I'm being overly critical and ignoring the fact that it's children's literature (like, I just wanted more - more about the war, more about the after, more about how the Grandfather was really okay with Peter just leaving, more about whether Vola and Peter crossed paths again etc).

I just finished 'Pax' yesterday. I wanted more but I felt like that wasn't the point of the story? The way it was written it felt like it was an allegory (is that the word I want?) so the details were not what was important, but the messages? Though I am REALLY not sure what kid to give it to! Or, I know the kid in my mind, but it would be a heck of a Reader's Advisory interview to find out if this book would work with them. I might still booktalk it at the schools though, maybe that would be the best bet, just tell a big audience about it and hope that one emotionally mature child is there.

Definitely - it's an allegory...I still wanted to details to just make a little more sense, I guess? But that's the other issue - I'm not sure who the audience would be. I like the idea of booktalking it at the schools and letting the kids self-identify...I'd be so nervous about recommending this to any kid personally!

I was SO NERVOUS reading those last few pages. I wasn't sure how dark it would get. I'm so glad that it didn't end with a bang hehe
