tv thoughts: Star Wars Rebels

I watched the series finale for Star Wars Rebels this morning. I didn't expect it to be quite so emotional at the end, though John Williams' scores tend to give me feels when they are just playing on a stereo, so that and solemn looks from Sabine were enough to make me fight back tears.
This show started out kinda rough, I wasn't sure I was going to like it. The first season was a lot of adventure-of-the-week stories and it felt like a kids show. Nothing wrong with that, Star Wars is for everyone, all ages, and I thought perhaps it wasn't meant for me. But by the end of Season 1, the character development was starting to show - the writers had no intention of letting them stay static cookie cutter characters, they wanted them to grow and change.
By season 4, they really have. Ezra has gotten better at controlling his anger. Sabine has learned, not just how to be a part of a team, but also how to lead one too. Hera and Kanan...*sigh*
I'm sure the ending probably drove some people crazy, the few things they left hanging in case they ever wanted to return to this group. But I appreciated everything not being tied up in a perfect bow.
So long Rebels. You set the bar high for the next round of Disney Star Wars cartoons.
SPOILERY SIDE NOTE (don't read if you're not caught up!!!)

I do have beef with the awkwardness that was having Kanan and Hera finally say "I love you" then Kanan sacrificing himself the next moment but then revealing that Hera was pregnant? Like, were they having sex and NOT saying they loved each other?
I totally knew the child reveal was coming, it is a kind of cliche in these sorts of shows (the Firefly spinoff comics did the same thing) and I don't mind it because it does help soften the blow of that lost character. I just found it a bit odd that they never gave them any *ahem* alone time for things to happen.
I know, I know, it's a kids' show! I'm overthinking! Still.

And now she and Sabine get to be awesome together!!!
I still need that series NOW.
EDIT *Maybe a better example would be how Simba and Nala totally have sex off-screen in The Lion King but we didn't realize it at first? Because Kanan and Hera totally loved each other, that was obvious from practically season one but it's different to actually...say it. This is the same universe that decided I Love You should always be followed by I know.
I do have two complains though...
1. No Cassian Andor
2. No Shara Bey
Seriously, the timing on this series was PERFECT to have either one or both and we really didn't get the Battle of Scariff where Cassian dies and then, Shara leaves about six months after the Battle of Endor so the new series looks like the wrong timeframe to have her.

I was just happy Rebels didn't fall into the same trap as 'Agents of SHIELD' where it just because part of the marketing machine for the upcoming movie. I felt like there were just enough intersects with the old films and new films to work.

Date: 2018-09-01 05:24 am (UTC)You think Hera and her son are the only POCs?
First, compare Sabine's doll to Rey's doll. The skin color is a LOT darker, right?
Satine was definitely pale but Jango Fett was played by a Maori actor as was Boba Fett as a child. I agree that the skin tone could have been darker but she's definitely Asian, either Maori like the Fetts or Indian like Sircar.
Then, there's Ezra, I was kind of ashamed it took me that long to figure out but if you compare Ezra with Kanan, his skin is definitely darker. His parents, shown briefly, also look Asian like from the Middle East.
In that respect, Star Wars: Resistance is a lot more obvious about its diversity. They're drawn to have more racial differences than just skin color.
The artwork though...that's going to take some getting used to...right now, it just looks so cheap especially when binging Duck Tales.
Supposedly, the Ahsoka and Sabine series will be for the streaming service. I hope it's much less than what HBO and others charge.
Well, no, I didn't want it to have stuff just to have stuff but...I just want new stuff with Cassian and Shara...most people don't read the books or comics so they don't even realize how awesome Poe's parents were and Cassian has one one-shot comic and that's basically it other than the film and novelizations.

Date: 2018-09-01 01:46 pm (UTC)Resistance looks like the most recent Legend of Zelda video game...of course, I wasn't happy with how Rebels looked when I saw it's first trailer LOL. It's all about the storytelling, right?
Disney said they want their service to be less than anyone else's. In their most recent announcement, they said $6/month which would be a sweet price, especially for people who already have the other services and are trying to decide if they want another one.
