scary movies and memories

We just watched A Quiet Place which I actually enjoyed. It was about my level of scary, all about the tension and suspense but at a PG-13 kind of way. It felt like a missing chapter of the Cloverfield story, but maybe that was the the creature design. It was a TENSE 90 minutes.

I went to go rate it on Letterboxd and noticed that a new Halloween movie is coming out next month. Usually, I wouldn't care about slasher flicks, especially the 11th in the series, but this one is supposed to be a sequel to the first film, ignoring everything else ever made (they even mock the second film in the trailer, in case you weren't sure of the timeline).

Like I said, I'm a wuss. I saw the first Halloween because I am big into film and it is hailed as the first slasher/kill the promiscuous teen film so I felt like I had to see it. I can't remember where my parents were that weekend, but my aunt Dana took me to the local video store and we got Halloween and Exorcist, both movies I was WAY too young to see...I must have been 12 or under. But it was for my education! And it was their own fault for leaving her in charge, clearly! She was my "cool aunt", the one that let me get away with stuff, swear etc. - stuff that when you are 12 and under feels AMAZING and SO ADULT.

But, anyway, while I watched most of 'Halloween' with my hands over my face, I actually did enjoy it. I rented the second one too, which I didn't hate, but knew to stop there. I don't think I have watched them since though, because I'm sure they would steal freak me out!

So the idea of a continuation of that story does sound cool, especially watching Jamie Lee Curtis run around with crazy grandma hair and a shotgun in the trailer.

Side note: The only part in Exorcist that freaked me out was the spinal tap scene. MEDICAL PROCEDURES ARE GROSS! I guess Satan is less scary than a crazy dude in a mask with a large knife. *shrug*

second side note: Sylvia has informed me she has been watching the first season of American Horror Story so I guess her Mom forgot to set the child lock on Netflix or something because I know I still have the lock on mine. She's binge watched that but Quiet Place was too much for her. I guess they are very different kinds of scary stories.

Any scary story memories to share? What was the first scary movie you saw? Was it "age appropriate" or did someone "let" you watch it?

So, first scary movie--honestly do not remember, although I will say I obsessively rewatched "Hocus Pocus" so many times as a kid that I could easily recite it line for line from memory. It took me a long time to realize my love of scary movies openly, but that time has LONG passed.

I was kinda bored by the first "Halloween" though. When it comes to classic 80s slashers, I prefer "Nightmare On Elm Street" and "The Evil Dead," the latter of which is my FAVORITE horror franchise, period. It's just the right level of disgusting/intentionally funny/action-packed/legit terrifying. Those things shouldn't all work at the same time, but they do, and it's awesome.

I guest-starred on a podcast talking about "The Exorcist" once! I think the link's down now *sadface* but fun fact: That scene has been used in actual medical schools as a demonstration for how to do that particular procedure. Squicky as hell! But also useful, for science and stuff. (Guh, why do I know this? Thanks, Kat!)

Next on my watch list is "The Nun" if I can get to a theater before it leaves. I've heard good things!

Ah yes, 'Evil Dead'. Classic. But I've always loved Bruce Campbell and the Raimi boys. Though I've probably seen 'Army of Darkness' the most out of the trilogy.

I'm curious to hear how The Nun is, if only because I really enjoyed the first 'Conjuring' movie and I like Taissa Farmiga.

"Army of Darkness" is great--doesn't get nearly the love it deserves, IMO.

I rewatched "The Conjuring" not that long ago to prepare for "The Nun." It's a solid little haunted house movie, which is just the sort of thing I was looking for at the time. I wasn't impressed by the prequel, "Annabelle," so I'm hoping "The Nun" is better.

I did NOT want to watch scary movies as a kid or a teenager. Like, when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, the opening scene of Hook (A PETER PAN MOVIE) freaked me out. Right when the kids disappear from the nursery, and you see the scratch marks up the walls and everything, I was like NOPE. OUT. Unsolved Mysteries gave me nightmares. And when all of my 7th grade class watched Jurassic Park, I did not. PEOPLE GET EATEN IN THAT!!! So I never had a desire to sit down and watch an 'actual' scary movie, lol.

Now, I can handle the gore, but scary movies just don't interest me. I've seen a few, but I barely remember. I saw Paranormal Activity, because everyone was talking about it, and I don't remember a damn thing about it.

All I remember about 'Paranormal Activity' was thinking "If these people had cats, they wouldn't even know their house was haunted." Once you have pets knocking shit over in the middle of the night, you ignore all the sounds LOL.

I remembered I was too afraid to watch 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' because of the ghosts at the end...but for some reason, watching people get their hearts ripped out in 'Temple of Doom' didn't bother me at all. I was a weird kid.
