So, everything went well yesterday. My friend from work showed up around 5:30ish, then we met [livejournal.com profile] maybemanda and her sister around 6ish and had dinner at a place called 'No Way Jose'. Yummy Mexican food. Then we wandered over to the club and managed to find some seats and about 10 minutes later the opening act came on - Eric Hutchinson. He was, as his t-shirt said, pretty good. We had seen him before, I think opening for Rockwell Church at Jammin Java. He has a great sense of humor...and a really big nose! I hadn't really noticed last time because I was far back, but for this show we were actually seated above the stage so I could really see. haha. He's fun though, he knows how to connect with his audience. (according to his website, he's going to be opening for jason mraz...he'll be bigger very soon then) The second group, Alternate Rutes, was alright but they didn't really engage me. There was nothing wrong with their performance, but I just couldn't pay attention! I knew the Sixers were on next.

Unfortunately, the mics went crazy on their second song. See, the boys came out and opened with a quiet rendition of 'Blackbird' and when they went into actual song mode, the feedback went crazy. Stephen was freaking out, as this was his first time performing a solo concert in Baltimore and at this venue. He sorta had a fit on stage then said they would go offstage so it could get fixed (the sound was horrid, I will give him that). He also had a bad moment when someone yelled out a song request. Stephen said that they would play that later but first he wanted to play a song from the album before. The person in the crowd yelled back that they didn't know that song and wanted their song. *shrug* Stephen was a bit upset, saying that the guy can't blame him for not knowing the CD before this one.

It was a bit unsettling too that the club was the last in a pub crawl. We had some rowdy older people wandering around, just there for the free food, asking us who this band was.

but apart from all that the show went very well. Poor Kit stripped down to his long johns and danced the Napoleon Dynamite dance. That boy is insane. I hung out after the show and said hello to everyone.

I'm really proud of them all. Insanely jealous, but proud. I wish I was brave enough to do something in the entertainment business, but I'm just not that kind of person. One "boo" or "yawn" and I would probably be in tears. If I could actually get the guts up to sing for anyone besides myself. So instead, I latch on to these little guys and watch them grow. Howie Day was the first. I followed him from show to show, even drove up to Boston to see him perform at the House of Blues. I saw him something like...23 times? He knew my name and my face and we pretty nice. But then he got big, and I was forgotten and that's okay because I understand how that works. But I got bitter when he got into trouble with the police a few months later.

but anyway, while seeing Howie at house of blues, I bumped into Stephen Kellogg. I had actually seen him perform before that at The Point but that had been my...hm...second Howie show, so I hadn't really been paying as much attention to the opening act. Though I do remember him singing his one song Anthem of our Discovery which remains a favorite of mine. And when he sang it at 'House of Blues', I remembered who he was. While waiting to say hello to Howie at that show, [livejournal.com profile] maybemanda and I ended up chatting with Stephen. I remember joking that Howie had a song called "Kristina" but no one has a song with my name. Stephen did. So I bought that CD and his latest album at the time. He was real sweet and signed the CD for us. So, while Howie was on the verge of making it, I sorta switched over to Stephen. That was 4 years ago. He's still not huge yet, but he's steadily getting bigger, he's got a solid band and they've signed a record deal but they still play little clubs so I get to say hello after the show. And I love that, but I know they want more. I'm sort of dreading the day they play the bigger clubs downtown. But at the same time, I really want them to make it, because they have worked very hard and really deserve it.

Then there's Rockwell Church - those boys are great and I actually think they are pretty happy with where they are...though I'd have to ask them. But I think, now that Nathan is married and has his little daughter to worry about, I think he's cool with not being super famous so he can have a normal life. Same with Joti, who's been working hard at school stuff (and suddenly has a ring on his finger??). Again, they are awesome and deserve to be super famous, but I don't think they want that crazy lifestyle. And that makes me happy because I know I'll have them to go and see in the next few years when Stephen finally hits it big...

then I'll be out of musicians to follow. hehe. But I guess once you reach a certain age, you should stop following them because after awhile you turn into that creepy older chick haha. I don't want to be her.

I love my memories though. Good stories to tell when I'm 80 and "uncool" haha.

"ramblings of a former band-aid"

haha i love that.

and HEY, nothing wrong with following bands. it just means you're a true fan. :) i don't think i'll ever stop following pearl jam...i don't care if i'm old. who cares! i know pearl jam fans in their 30s and 40s who follow them. i think that's awesome.
the only other bands i've sort of followed str rx bandits and then the tour with reel big fish/el pus/zolof. but i just went to a few shows on the tours within like 2 hours driving distance. nothing like how i follow pearl jam. and i honestly don't know if there will ever be another band that i'll follow like pearl jam.. my parents still ask when i'm going to get over them, and they've been asking that since 1998. haha.

yeah, you're even more hard core than me! ;) I haven't followed any big bands from show to show like you. I sorta spent all my energy on Howie back in the day (of course, I only had school then, not all this job stuff!) now I just make sure I hit shows within a 2 hour radius haha. But it does make for some fantastic stories to tell.
