went to see Cary Brothers and KT Tunstall. Cary was alright, I had only heard 'blue eyes' off the 'Garden State' soundtrack, which he sang. But his other stuff was just alright. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy said his microphone was crap, which was screwin him a bit, couldn't handle his voice.

I have to say, I'm not very fond of Ramshead as venues go. I've been to so many superior venues that Ramshead just upsets me. Mostly because they have those damn waiters running around during so much of it. And the room is just built weird. Plus, you end up sitting with people you do not know because of the table set up, which weirds me out. We have two nice couples with us, though the one guy kept wanting to show off is iPod Video, to the point of showing us the Today show clip of the girl that was about to play. We mocked him on the way home.

Anyway, so this KT Tunstall chick. [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m has sent me her MySpace page which had a clip of her on some british tv show doing a song. It was here all alone on stage, armed with a guitar, a tambourine, and some looping petals. It was pretty darn cool, so I was excited to see her perform. But when we got to Ramshead, we noticed a whole lottal equipment on stage. In fact, far too much equipment - drums, guitars, keyboards....turns out, she has a band as of right now. So, the cool, independant girl that i came to see, became a lead singer backed by far too many people on stage. She has a really great voice, very Melissa Ethridge meets Norah Jones - husky. And her tunes were fun, but the band was just annoying when you come to see someone perform solo. Soooo I'm downloading her album now to hear what it sounds like. I mean, she just beat out U2 and Coldplay in the british version of the grammys so she's gotta be good! Right?

I like KT Tunstall's music in general, esp 'big black horse and the cherry tree' and 'miniature disaster'...but you're right. She shouldn't have a whole big band up there with her. GRR!

yeah, I'm wondering what the story behind that was. I think record labels force bands on people at times, like no one will see a solo artist. And maybe the looping was just something she did because she didn't have a band...but I dunno. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy siad she should just keep the bass player and ditch the rest.

And I have to say, some part of me was very excited to see an independant female singer up there doing rockin' tunes. So it really just let the air outta me tires when she ended up on stage surrounded by dudes.

Yeah! Can you imagine going to see Ani Difranco surrounded by guys with guitars? It'd just be WRONG. :p

well, Ani's band, as far as I know, are friends of hers or hand picked by her. She's got her own label and such so no one tells her what to do anyway hehe.

Yeah, she's Ani. She's her own show. :p Man, i'd love to see HER in concert! Now that I have a fish I keep remembering that song Little Plastic Castle...they say goldfish have no memory, I guess their lives are much like mine and the little plastic castle is a surprise every time :)

acorrding to ani's website, she's actually taking an extended break from touring for the first time in 15 years of constant touring. she has tendonitis (sp?). i found that out just as i was checking to see if she was doing some shows. haha. anyway it's better she takes the break.
but where i'm going with this is that she's actually gone back to doing solo stuff...her recent album is all solo, instead of with a back-up band. i don't know, i kind of like the mix of her solo and back-up band. oh well.

aw, that's too bad. I'm always upset when artists get work related injuries like that! Seems like they should be rewarded for being awesome instead of having to stop. Then again, 15 years, geez louise!!

I prefer her with a bit of a mix as well.

Yeah the album sounds very much like it is backed by an actual band.

I guess she may end up as another artist that gets the same treatment that Jason Mraz did.

Nonetheless, she seems very talented to me. :)

yeah, the tracks I'm listening to off the album sound well mixed, but it doesn't sound like as many people in the band as were on stage.

Jason Mraz had 75% of his band prior to getting a major record deal, so they had chemistry and were best buddies and it was awesome to see them laughing and joking on stage. Howie Day, on the other hand, was given a band after signing on a major label, which pretty much had nothing to do with his original music. So it changed his style/music etc.

Of course, then he turned into a total dick, but I am unsure if that can be blamed on the band either....

Anyway, I think I'm just upset that I missed that stage of her performing but full band mode could be good in a better venues.

yeah, I think what's going on right now... Major Record labels are doing all they can to stay alive, and well.... the general masses want to see more than one person on a stage..... I eventually see a major decline in record labels, and with it the blossoming of some very true (even though small scale) artists.

i just realized your LJ says "32 flavors and then some" - ani lyrics, nice! :)
and by the way, the only bootleg i have of ani is the one you gave me...remember that? i think it's the Osaka, Japan show from '98 or something. i just listened to it recently since i've been on an ani kick lately. i checked out ani's official website and i didn't know she released official bootlegs...i'll have to check one of them out. she's definitely an artist i enjoy listening to live over studio, even though the one time i saw her the show was a bit disappointing.
/end rant

Ani seems to change styles every other album too. The one live show I saw was right after the release of 'swing set', which I hadn't heard and I'd only heard early stuff, but since the tour was to promote 'swing set' she hardly played any of her old stuff. So that was weird.

Hey, that means I have a live show! *digs thru stacks of burned CDs*
