[livejournal.com profile] jimithingy and I sat down last night and watched disc 1 of the BSG boxed set - that would be the 4 hour miniseries. We didn't actually *mean* to watch all 4 hours in one sitting but there was just no where to stop!! Once it got going, it was too intense to pause and say "oh we'll come back tomorrow".

So far, I'm really enjoying the show. I don't think I'll obsess over it like Buffy, but I really like the characters. Do they get to do any "light" episodes? The miniseries and "33" were pretty heavy, and I like a little goofiness every now and then.

Speaking of obsessing, I was not't consciously looking for it, but I did see Serenity's cameo in the miniseries. Got me thinking of the colonial government was so great after all or if they were just some fancy-pants Alliance members bossing everyone around. ;-)

off to see '300' in a little bit!!!

BSG generally stays pretty heavy and dramatic. I actually stopped watching season 3 because it was too much. All the characters just make me angry now and there's too much bleeding of good and bad that you're not entirely sure who to root for anymore. But up till part way in season 3 it was wonderful... but yes, consistently pretty dark and dramatic and 'heart of darknessy' as Willow would say. LOL

lol, thanks for the heads up! I'd heard s2 was a bit rough, but isn't it usually for most shows as the writers get over "OMG they didn't cancel us?" shock ;)

Dr Who is on my netflix list now too...just have to find the time! Maybe over the summer I'll give the ol' boy another chance. :)

I do that sometimes. I watched half of season one Supernatural episodes before finally stopping... and picked it back up the next day. :D

Season one has intermittant "light" parts..."Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", "Six Degrees of Seperation" and "Colonial Day" all have a lot of fun elements to their stories. Season two is also decently light, at least in the beginning. But after 2.5 (starting with "Pegasus") it becomes pretty much dark.
There are scattered fun moments, but the tone is all but completely dark from then on out, especially in the third season.

I don't mind it because I've been with the show from the beginning and it makes sense for where the characters are now, but yeah. It can get pretty draining.

sounds like season 4 of Angel or that s5 into s6 of Buffy - which all paid off in the end if you could survive the middle. :) And now that Jane Espenson has joined the writing crew, maybe things will lighten up a bit again? No idea, I've only seen the pilot for crying out loud! haha. But from the sound of it, I probably shouldn't marathon the show, but space it out over a week so I have time to recover ;)

It depends on you, really. Over winter break I bought the first season DVD partially just so I could force conversion on my friend, and we managed to get through it in like, a week, watching about a disc (three eps, I think) a day.
Season one can probably be marathon'd...but if you get into the later parts I'd be a little wary of doing that with season 2 and I seriously do not recommend it for season 3. They replayed the first eleven eps of season 3 one day before the new ones started, and I watched them all, and...I was screwed up for the entire day. Oh my god, it was awful.
