So, I remembered what I wanted to post about last night -- "microblogging"

It's apparently the new term for things like Twitter and the "Status Update" feature on Facebook. But what is it really all about? I mean, you have to have access to a computer 24/7 to make it work the way you want it to. Those of us with jobs that don't let us surf the 'net all day won't get as much out of it. So talk about an even smaller group.

It's amusing. But at the same time, my first instinct is to comment! But since it's a "microblog" it's too small to have a comment field. Or anything else for that matter.

And it's all fun and games now but what if it morphs into something like the cell phone - once a device for occasional communication, it's now a necessity. What if Twitter starts out like a joke, but soon employers are using it as a way to moniter your activity ("Sam is working on SRC stuff" "Sam is checking her email" "Sam is on lunch break") Oh god, it could be used for evil...it really could be.

Oh Internetz, you start out so innocent and quickly turn to the dark side. It's like RotS but with worse hair.

DOWN WITH TWITTER

and yes, there are many blogging avenues that have made it to the cell phone.

blogger allows it, livejournal has post by phone, and i ---think--- post by email? most phones can send emails via SMS msg.

add that to larger devices like blackberries, sidekicks, or the new iPhone and you have even further opportunities for people to update the world on their every thought, breath, and step.

livejournal also has voice-posting, which sounds like a novelty to me. I mean, I don't think I've ever been desperate enough to voice post...maybe I'll program the number into my phone and do it while we're on vacation in Bermuda haha.

microblogging is already hear. have a web enabled phone and you can do it anywhere you can have cell coverage.

And as far as the work using it for evil... My work already uses microblogging. its not a big deal. We just use it as a time card. It has options of:post start on and off breaks lunch, punch in/out, and what your are doing.
