TV is frustrating

Okay, so you can download the pilot episode of 'Chuck' from Amazon for FREE (because NBC and iTunes are having a little fight) so how will they judge the ratings for the first episode? I mean, if I do download the pilot (not sure if my computer meets the requirements) and watch it, why would I bother watching it on the night it aired? And if TV execs are still looking at Nielson ratings and such, how will they know which people didn't watch because they weren't interested, and which people didn't watch because they already saw the pilot because of this download.

I'm just saying, after losing shows like 'Drive' and 'Kitchen Confidential' because of "poor viewership" in the first few episodes, will free downloads like this be taken into consideration by the Powers That Be?

Though I should probably stay calm, this is NBC not FOX we are talking about...still...

EDIT: Dangit, looks like you need Windows XP and I'm still rolling on Win 2000. *sigh* Doesn't say anything about Mac at all. That's harsh!!! I guess that's because Mac is iTunes territory...still, I don't want to sully my new MacBook by downloading WMP on it. ew.

Don't worry about sullying your computer with Media Player. You can download it, and it will sit nicely in a folder somewhere, never touching your "registry." Though, there is no registry on a Mac, and that's the beauty of it. You can have the awful software on your computer, and never think about it until you absolutely need to use it.

And you won't need to use it. In the past year, I haven't used my Media Player more than a couple of times. I've got the patches that make all the video files work in Quicktime.

The drawback is that all your WMA files are garbage now. Well, not garbage, but unless you find that feature in iTunes that will convert them for you, you might as well forget them.

Tell you what, since I've still to actually get up and pay you for that figure, I'll throw in a data disc of all the extra bits I've collected for my Mac, and you can make things work the way they...frankly, the way they should have always worked, but whatever. Computers take time to settle.

I'll still have my windows PC as my main computer, the Mac is just going to be my laptop...which I'm sure will take over my life a bit but at the same time all my games and such are on here.

But, any freebies are good freebies! Next thing I want to figure out is how to rip DVDs so I can play them on my iPod Video that I got...

iTunes just sent an email out about Gossip Girl, so I'm downloading that freebie now so I'll have something to watch on my iPod video haha. I'm sure it will be horrible but I want to at least watch the pilot for Kristen.

NBC seems to have a lot more faith in its drama series, and doesn't ditch them as quickly as FOX. I wish they could have picked up 'Drive' instead. *sigh*

Online cross-over/ tie-ins (I'm sure there's a trendy buzzword name..) seems to be the Next Big Thing, so trust me, the boardroom execs are paying a lot of attention to those download numbers. Especially since Nielson ratings, which I think were always suspect, are all but worthless these days (unless they've changed how they gather data to include Tivo, etc, but I don't know if they have). So for Nielson folks, I would say a download is probably a stronger vote than real-time viewing. And since you're not a Nielson household anyway, downloading gives you a vote that you didn't have before. So download away! (if you can..)
