tv thoughts: BSG
Mar. 15th, 2009 10:00 pmSo, I don't really feel like I should say too much about this week's episode of Battlestar Galactica, the first hour of the 3-hour series finale entitled "Daybreak".
I mean, really that was all it was. It would be like watching the first hour of Lord of the Rings or Watchmen and typing up a review. You can feel that so much of this hour was setting up pieces of the final puzzle, laying them out on the table but not showing you exactly where they fit...
Oh whatever, I'm still gonna type up my initial reactions!
So...this is it. Literally the beginning of the end. You know, I'm actually a bit upset that they couldn't run the entire thing in one night. Breaking it up like this is just odd. But I guess we all have DVRs now, we'll just rewatch part I before we watch Part II next Friday night. (or, if you have more willpower than me, you could have just taped tonights and not watched it until next week...but I only know one person strong enough to do that!)
I knew they couldn't end the show without Battlestar Galactica. How could you finish the series without its namesake on screen? Now, obviously she's gonna get blown to hell at the end, but that is not the point! I don't think that Adama, Roslin, Ellen, or Tigh will make it. They are all identified as the "parents" of the fleet and the Cylons and, as Starbuck said last season, sometimes the parents have to die for the children to come into their own. (of course, the odds of anyone else surviving seems really low too!!!)
Along those same lines, I would not be surprised if none of the "Final Five" make it. I don't know what Chief is gonna do...he could go either way. I'm afraid he'll rampage and kill Boomer, OR he'll find her and they will make up and run away together (HA! What show have I been watching?). I would not be surprised if Tory died...and I wouldn't care either. She has been such a Bitca since she found out she was a Cylon. Sam...well, Sam is sitting in a giant bathtub on BSG, and since BSG isn't gonna make it, I doubt Sam will either...
It was nice to have Adama finally say to Starbuck that she was his daughter. And it was even better that they didn't sap up the moment. Starbuck's reaction was totally in character - a slight smile but then back to business. Thank you for that writers, so many other shows would have gone for the violins and tearful eyes, but not our BSG.
When Doc Cottle volunteered and Adama told him to stay, I felt like crying! That was our goodbye to Doc Cottle! Nooooo!
The flashbacks to life on Caprica before the Cylon attack were very intriguing. I'm wondering if the seeds of that were sewn during Razor, since I know in the commentary on that they mention there were a lot more scenes for our regular characters showing their everyday lives, but they never made it onto the screen. I had never really read any of the backstory for the characters. Since I came to the game late, I was afraid of stumbling upon spoilers so the bit about Roslin's family dying in the car crash was all new to me.
And OMG Zack! What a surprise to see.
Also, isn't having a bird fly into your home a bad omen? Drunk!Lee was chasing around the Pigeon of Foreshadowing!
Gaius and his father...well, no surprise there. We already knew he wasn't proud of his heritage, and I'm sure his relationship with his dad had gone sour long ago as he distanced himself from his past. At first, I thought that Six was gonna snap ol' Dad's neck like she did the little baby on the even of the attack! But no, she set him up in a new nursing home.
Guh, that episode went by WAY to fast...and next week will be the end. I know that I will be, as Tricia Helfer said, a "bawling mess" as soon as the credits roll next Friday. I tend to survive until the very end, then have a nervous breakdown. (if Buffy, Angel, and Gilmore Girls are anything to go by).

Date: 2009-03-16 02:07 am (UTC)If it was all in three hours in one night, I'd definitely love it and hate it at the same time, because I'm going to have to eat, bathroom break and try not to miss anything. ;)
