So, now that we have the PS3, the urge to buy everything in blu-ray format is very strong. At first, I was going to resist, but now I want to see how pretty my movies can really be.

We watched Blu-Ray 'Iron Man' on Sunday night. I even put on my glasses to get the full effect. It seemed clearer. The sequence that really stood out to me was when Iron Man makes his first appearance and flies out to fight the terrorist baddies. During this scene, there is ash raining down from the sky. I never really noticed it before, but on the blu-ray it was very clear. I know that is just a little thing, but it was when my brain finally said "whoa, this IS better".

Yesterday, AD put in our regular Iron Man DVD, just to see how big a difference it was. WOW. Looking at the regular DVD, it was clear how much better the blu-ray image is.

So now I want to see my other movies and see how much better they look and sound on blu-ray. I guess this is really the first big media format change I've been through as an adult. I mean, the big cassette to CD and VHS to DVD happened when I was a kid/teen, so it wasn't me paying for yet another copy of Star Wars or Sting album. But now I will know the confusion of deciding what needs to be upgraded, and what can wait.

Amazon has the Lord of the Rings trilogy available for pre-order on Blu-Ray. GUH - WANT! Frak that, just noticed it was THEATRICAL and not the extended versions, which I prefer. Blah.

A blu-ray collector's set of Battlestar Galactica has been announced but I am of two minds about that. Part of me is spazzing like a fangirl. But the other part of me, the part that has purchased s1-s4.0, plus Razor, is worried that this will not be the definitive set and in a few years time maybe another, better, boxed set will be released. Someone get Ron Moore on the phone and ask him if they have put everything they can into this set! [livejournal.com profile] dexterette and I were discussing this on her LJ and unless they can convince me that they haven't just copy+pasted all the content from the original dvd releases, but have actually added new stuff, I'm probably gonna hold off on this one.

I think if we buy any boxed sets in blu-ray, the first purchases will be Band of Brothers and Firefly because from all the reviews I've read, they took special care in the transfer of both of these programs.

So, yeah, I dunno. I feel like I should hold off on buying anything else this month but at the same time we have this powerful hi-def machine and I want tos ee everything in hi-def NOW! haha. Life is rough.

Get the Firefly Blu-Ray. It looks beautiful, and is a lot cheaper than BSG! lol

Yeah, and I think the chances of me re-watching Firefly right now are higher than BSG (I'm falling behind on the refrak, got distracted by a Buffy urge). :)

Firefly is only 14 episodes. BSG is 70+. Yeah, Firefly rewatches are much easier. :-D

Teehee.. I know what you mean.. it was like that The Simpsons, where Lenny gets an HD and Homer goes home to regular tv and pouts, "Picture's so blurry, might as well rub dirt in my eyes." Nothing else measures up anymore! And while I'm sure it's bad doing Ironman on the two systems, but really, without a side-by-side comparison, the upgrade PS3 is to standard definition DVDs is huge.. the up-conversion is so much better in that system than it was through the HD-DVD on XBOX360. Aaaaand, I'm babbling. ;)

But yeah. Mostly I've just been buying new stuff with mine, but I've succumbed and repurchased a few favourites myself. ;)

Actually, now that you mention it, in the first Simpsons DVD box set, there's a note that says something along the lines of "thanks for buying this dvd set which will probably be obsolete before we get the rest of the series out". Oh how right they were haha. Not that I really need Hi-Def simpsons.

we got a blue ray player like 2 years ago when we got our hi def tv. we got a bunch of free dvds as part of a promotion for getting one. we have only bought Stanley Kubrick films, Apocalypto, Blade Runner, Hellboy 2 and one anime, Paprika.
LOTR looks amazing on it as is! In fact, we had to mess with the setting because it looked so real, like you were standing on set, all of the magic was gone. We were like, those rocks look fake! That backdrop is painted!
We have Firefly Blue Ray on our wish list though. We find ourselves looking at movies and saying, Why would anyone need a blu-ray version of *insert comedy here* the picture quality won't make it any funnier. So we stick to movies that are pretty. That's how we decide :)

That was pretty much the conclusion we came to last night. I told AD it probably wasn't necessary to get any "arranging matches" movies on DVD because it doesn't matter how clear the matches are haha. But for 'SPLOSIONS! OMG! haha. We figure our blu-ray collection will be mostly our favorite sci-fi/fantasy/action movies.

Mostly I'm paranoid because I remember when DVDs first came out and how they were just copying the a VHS quality print to DVD willy-nilly, in an attempt to get stuff on the market, so I don't want to buy a movie and have it be the crappy version, then in 5 years a "special collector's 5 year anniversary blu-ray" will appear. I mean, I'm a Star Wars fan, so I am used to it, but I don't think my wallet can take having to buy all of my movies as many times as I've bought Star Wars (and that darned Lucas better just put ALL of the versions out, including the original...I SWEAR!)

YES! Some of the free movies we got (Species, Bram Stokers Dracula) were in no way upgraded to a better quality before being transferred, so be careful! We look for the"re-mastered" label :)
