girly_scribbles posted her list of guilty pleasure movies this week, so I thought I would post mine.
These are those movies that you watch in secret, that you own on DVD but have tucked away at the bottom of your shelf, or you only watch them when you need a certain something, be it nostalgia or just for the ridiculousness of it all. So here are my 5, in no particular order:
Clue: The Movie: Based on the board game (how many movies can say that?), this is classic 80s and I think a lot of people my age have a special spot in their movie-going heart for this film. I know it was the first time I ever saw the genius that is Tim Curry, not to mention the rest of this all star cast. Ridiculous, highly quotable, and just plain silly (with no apologies) it's so bad it's good. |
Labyrinth - Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Terry Jones - how could this movie go wrong? Actually, I don't think it's a bad movie - the moral of the story is perfect for when you're 8, and it has lots of silliness, action and adventure but I don't think it has aged as well as, say, The Dark Crystal. It did introduce me to David Bowie (though my realization that he was anything but Jared the Goblin King didn't come until later). I still remember my dad hooking up the reel-to-reel and recording the soundtrack off of our BETA copy of this movie, so I could listen to it on my Fisher Price tape player...(I actually own the soundtrack on CD now, don't judge me!) |
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: I saw this movie many many times in the theater the summer it came out. Like Superman, Robin Hood is one of those characters that I'm attracted to, so put anyone in the outfit (yes, even Kevin Costner!) and he's suddenly my new crush. Over the years, I've switched from Costner to Rickman when watching this film, (who gives a performance that is just beyond everyone else). The movie even comes packaged with a really sappy Bryan Adams song, which my pre-teen self used to blare from her boombox while playing outside. |
Josie and the Pussycats: This movie has lots of great moments as they mock the world of pop-music. For some odd reason, Alan Cumming has a lead role (he was also in Spice World - the man loves his ridiculous movies based around fake pop-groups, doesn't he?). When I first saw it, during the hey-day of Carson Daly and VH1 Behind the Music (2001), I thought it was the funniest thing. Rewatching it, its a bit clunky at times, but there are still a few moments that make me LOL. Plus, it has a really great soundtrack of songs written just for the movie. (yes, I own that CD too). |
Legally Blonde: This movie is adorable, funny and smart. I actually refused to see it in theaters since I'm easily annoyed by the dumb blonde stereotype. I think my parents must have rented it...ANYWAY, the more I watch it, the more I appreciate the message of the show. Elle Woods isn't dumb, her priorities are just in a different place. And as soon as Warner insults her by saying she isn't smart enough to compete for the internship, she becomes so much more. I love the ending too. (I didn't see the sequel because I read they messed up her character). |
