[livejournal.com profile] girly_scribbles posted her list of guilty pleasure movies this week, so I thought I would post mine.

These are those movies that you watch in secret, that you own on DVD but have tucked away at the bottom of your shelf, or you only watch them when you need a certain something, be it nostalgia or just for the ridiculousness of it all. So here are my 5, in no particular order:

Clue: The Movie: Based on the board game (how many movies can say that?), this is classic 80s and I think a lot of people my age have a special spot in their movie-going heart for this film. I know it was the first time I ever saw the genius that is Tim Curry, not to mention the rest of this all star cast. Ridiculous, highly quotable, and just plain silly (with no apologies) it's so bad it's good.
Labyrinth - Jim Henson, George Lucas, David Bowie, Terry Jones - how could this movie go wrong? Actually, I don't think it's a bad movie - the moral of the story is perfect for when you're 8, and it has lots of silliness, action and adventure but I don't think it has aged as well as, say, The Dark Crystal. It did introduce me to David Bowie (though my realization that he was anything but Jared the Goblin King didn't come until later). I still remember my dad hooking up the reel-to-reel and recording the soundtrack off of our BETA copy of this movie, so I could listen to it on my Fisher Price tape player...(I actually own the soundtrack on CD now, don't judge me!)
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: I saw this movie many many times in the theater the summer it came out. Like Superman, Robin Hood is one of those characters that I'm attracted to, so put anyone in the outfit (yes, even Kevin Costner!) and he's suddenly my new crush. Over the years, I've switched from Costner to Rickman when watching this film, (who gives a performance that is just beyond everyone else). The movie even comes packaged with a really sappy Bryan Adams song, which my pre-teen self used to blare from her boombox while playing outside.
Josie and the Pussycats: This movie has lots of great moments as they mock the world of pop-music. For some odd reason, Alan Cumming has a lead role (he was also in Spice World - the man loves his ridiculous movies based around fake pop-groups, doesn't he?). When I first saw it, during the hey-day of Carson Daly and VH1 Behind the Music (2001), I thought it was the funniest thing. Rewatching it, its a bit clunky at times, but there are still a few moments that make me LOL. Plus, it has a really great soundtrack of songs written just for the movie. (yes, I own that CD too).
Legally Blonde: This movie is adorable, funny and smart. I actually refused to see it in theaters since I'm easily annoyed by the dumb blonde stereotype. I think my parents must have rented it...ANYWAY, the more I watch it, the more I appreciate the message of the show. Elle Woods isn't dumb, her priorities are just in a different place. And as soon as Warner insults her by saying she isn't smart enough to compete for the internship, she becomes so much more. I love the ending too. (I didn't see the sequel because I read they messed up her character).

I have to disagree with the first two on the list. Those are just pleasures, no guilt involved!

haha, well, I only feel guilty when I see David Bowie's *ahem* tights. haha. Honestly, I didn't even notice that as a kid but now any time I mention the movie, people are like "OMGDAVIDBOWIECROTCH!".

man, now I want to watch them both haha.

Psht. Clue's not a guilty pleasure movie... it's a classic. Every line in that movie is quotable!

And the Labyrinth could be a guilty pleasure movie depending on the person... my 27-year-old stepbrother, of course, was blaring "Magic Dance" in the car when I was with him one day, and he preceded to jump out of the vehicle while at a stoplight and dance to it in the middle of the street. So we can mark him down as a "vocal lover". :P

I'm going to have to do this meme, I think I have a few eye-roll-inducing movies in my collection...

Don't hide your love of BowieBulge under a bushel. Let your freak flag fly, bb.

haha. ;)

Yes to them all (I also agree that the first two should have no guilt involved. haha.)

Ooooh I am going out for pizza and I think my feet may fall off after my first day at the law office, but I should be able to post them around 7:30-8ish again. I'll be on MSN when I get back and you log on when you are ready to post. :D (It can even be later if it works better for you.)

I'm sure someone has, and I am also sure I will have to remember to make a BowieBulge icon. hahahahahaha.

I love Legally Blonde (but yeah, the second one is just a waste - completely undos all the work of the first)! Did you know Ali Larter (Niki/Jessica/et al from Heroes) was in it??

Trufax: I had never seen Labyrinth until, like, last month. Dr. Boyfriend found out I hadn't and wouldn't let go until this situation was rectified.

I know, I remember you spazzing on your LJ about it. It's a good thing you watched it, I'm pretty sure they can take away your geek card if you don't know the correct response to "you remind me of the babe" ;-)

I KNOW! When I watched Heroes the first time I was like "who IS that? I know here from somewhere" and then they ran LB on tv again and I was like OMGJESSICANIKI!

Ha, I totally didn't remember her being in Legally Blonde...they just reran it on TV one day, and I was like "ho shit!". Just like whenever I watch an old Law & Order and an actor who's since come to be semi-famous is the suspect/witness/victim of the week.

Ooh, Labyrinth!! I have to see that again. Just reading your description reminded me of the song with the goblins throwing their heads around. And ooooh DavidBowieJared! ::sizzle:: I see nothing freaky about scoping any part of his anatomy. I agree, though, Dark Crystal ages better. Did you see the Jim Henson exhibit in DC with the awesome Skeksis puppet, and *Kira's dress*?? Omigosh! (That whole exhibit was a phenomenal pilgrimage for me.)

I have now watched most of Legally Blonde with my husband. It's a fun romp, and does turn the "dumb blonde" stereotype on its head in a non-annoying way.

That song/sequence is probably my favorite from Labyrinth. Sadly, I missed out on the Henson exhibit. I had all these plans to go and time just got away from me. I still haven't taken my lazy butt down to UMCP to see the statue of him. :(

Yeah, that about sums up Legally Blonde. It's not an award winner by any stretch, but it is nice to see a movie, especially a movie with that premise, that actually ends with everyone getting just what they deserve. I love how Selma Blair's character comes around in the end and realized Warner is an ass and befriends Elle. Relatively positive film for girls, I think.

!!! OMG. I loved Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves so much.. the tape case for it was made all soft and battered from so many watchings. Everyone always made fun of me for it, but I never cared because it was awesome. Also enamored of Clue, Labyrinth (SMELLS BAD!!!!!!!!), and Legally Blonde. :) I've never actually seen Josie though.. I'll have to keep an eye out. But speaking of Alan Cumming in ridiculous roles, if you haven't seen Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion, you must. From this list here, you would love it, I think. ;)

YES! OMG I totally forgot about Romy & Michelle. I actually own BOTH of the soundtrack CDs (remember those marketing shenanigans of the late 90s? the "Music from" and "More Music From" CDs, not to mention the "Music inspired by"?) I had it on VHS...hm, wonder where that is...probably in my closet at my parent's house.

The dance sequence at the end is classic. Another fun movie with lots of random actors. Have you seen "Grosse Pointe Blank"? It came out at the exact same time, also about a high school reunion, but a dark comedy rather than the ridiculousness of R&M. I love GPB, and not just because of the John Cusack factor.

Yeah, I should have linked to your original post but I realized it was buried in my Twitter feed and got lazy. My bad LOL!

Josie is such a random movie. And Rosario is like this big grown up actress now in oscar nominated movies. Her and Jennifer Connelly will always be "the girl from those movies" to me...
