I sleep with a fan on.

As a kid, my dad had a big fan he would put in the hallway and turn on at
night. I think it was because he spent so much time on ships (Navy) and
was used to hearing the engine hum so the fan sort of took the place of
that.

Then when I moved in with the ex, he had the same white noise addiction so
I had a fan then too. And after he left, I still needed the fan!

But on Sunday, the fan DIED! We tried to clean it, we took it apart and
removed as much of the cat hair and girl hair and gunk wrapped around the
motor but nothing. It hums but doesn't spin. So I tossed and turned on
Sunday night, unable to sleep because of random cat noises, people upstairs
etc. I guess I'm a light sleeper.

I was freaking out about having to buy a fan after work yesterday when a
friend pointed out I could download a white noise app to my iPhone. DUH!
So I downloaded a couple different apps to try last night. There are so
many "noise" choices it was ridiculous! There are waves, rain, storms,
wind chimes, lightning, humming -- the list goes on and on!

I found one that had both wind and a fan. I thought "well, wind might be
nice, it will have that sort of rocking sound that waves do but now as
loud, plus I'm used to hearing wind! Yes I will try that.". So I put on
the wind noise, and it slowly helped me drift into the sleep zone...not all
the way asleep, but somewhere between sleep and awake...and as I listened
to the sound of the wind blowing and moving my brain thought it would be
hilarious to start to interpret some of the sounds as CREEPY WHISPERING!

Suddenly, I went from almost asleep to having my heart pounding in my
chest, imagining a creepy Japanese girl with her black hair in her face
looming over me. I wanted to turn it off but I had freaked myself out so
much I couldn't bring myself to open my eyes. After a brief pep talk in my
mind, I convinced myself to grow up, open my eyes, and turn off the damn
sound.

Which I did, and the killer ghost was not there so I switched it to the fan
noise and promptly fell asleep.

I am a wuss.

Dude fan sleeping FTW!! My family is HORRIBLE with having to have a fan running to sleep. Even my 4 year old nephew turns his little fan on at night so he can sleep.

Those are seriously the WORST terrors in the middle of the night. I fell asleep once after watching The Omen and woke up in a panic that only got worse when I saw the clock said 3:42. WHICH my stupid brain went 3, 4+2= 6... 666! You're gonna die!!!!

>.> I think I may need to stop watching horror movies before bed. Hehe

LOL yes, I am like that too! After I watched 'The Ring' (I don't know why I even thought that was a good idea), every time I went into the bathroom, I had to yank the shower curtain back to double check and I would check for puddles on the floor. I mean, I AM AN ADULT! WTF.

There's something about ghosts that I just can't quite shake. I know other creatures aren't out to get me but ghosts...I dunno...there's just too sitings...

Cabin in the Woods is probably as horror as I can go.

OH man The Ring. I went and saw it at the theater. Later that night I fell asleep watching a VHS tape. I woke up in the middle of the night with stupid static all over my screen. I thought I was gonna die.

Guh, I love Cabin in the Woods. Actually I love horror A LOT but I've found the older I get the less I can handle it. I don't know if it's me or the fact everyone's trying to make them so realistic nowadays.

LOL okay watching a VHS after watching The Ring was just *asking* for trouble! I've never been a big horror movie fan because I get freaked so easy. I saw "The Grudge" (because of Sarah Michelle Gellar) and while I was walking back to my car, my friend called me and made the fREAKY NOISE! I was so scared the whole drive home...(and I've never seen a movie with him again LOL)

Yeahhhhhh not my most shining moment.

Bwhaha ok that's a horrible thing for your friend to do but I honestly probably woulda done the same thing. xD
After I went with my friend to go see Scream I dropped her off at her house, FLEW back to my house and put on my brother's Grim Reaper costume then went back to her house and rang the doorbell. The stomach punch was TOTALLLLLLLY worth it. Hehehe

LOL that reminds me of when my parents and I rented SCREAM and we were watching it on a warm summer day so we had the door and windows open. We started watching it and it was sunny but the sun started to set and this guy was walking by and he heard the screams from the movie and ran up and knocked on our door and scared the crap out of us LOL!

My stepfather is a fan sleeper. So now my mom is a fan sleeper, lol. I never got used to it, but I get FREAKED OUT when I am in a place that is so rural there is not light/noise during the night. Even if it's just an occasional car passing by and a far away streetlight. I NEED IT. I get awful nightmares if I am in all dark and silent.

Those are the worst kind of nightmares. D: D: D: I have learned to not watch anything scary after, like, 5pm lest I wake up screaming, lol

YES! My grandparent's house in Maine is like that, SO DARK! I would freak out going to bed because I didn't want to have to get up in the middle of the night to pee LOL. I need that white noise and random light to keep me sane!

Alex needs to sleep with a fan on. I can go with or without, but there is always a few days at the beginning and end of summer when I have to adjust to having the air conditioner on or off. I get so used to the hum in the summer that for awhile I can't sleep without it.

Still, I downloaded a few of the "sleepmaker" apps cause sometimes I like rain sounds at night. It makes things more cozy, lol.

AND OMG I hate those kind of nightmare things. I totally get how you feel. It's like, I'm a fucking adult! WTH! There was this weird light casting a shadow in the corner of my ceiling once and I had no idea where it was coming from and it kind of looked like a figure. I had been watching X-Files so OF COURSE my first thought was "ALIENS!111 D:" SIGH.

Tim has rain sounds or waves or something on his alarm clock so I think I now associate rain/wave sounds with waking up :\

It could be aliens! And dammit X Files offers no real advice on how to AVOID abduction!!!!

I sleep with a fan too! But fans are really cheap here so if it were to die, I would have just bought a new one.

Man, i'm a wuss too. iSometimes I just imagine faces/shapes etc etc and it's not even caused by... horror movies. I can't do horror movies, at all. I think I will just die at them.

I had one hell of a time sleeping without my fan last night. I was about six hours away in a hotel and so I put on the tv (background noise) but I only got about three hours of sleep. What is the app called for the fan one?

It's called "Relax Melodies". It's kinda cool, I found out you can mix sounds together so I've been doing the fan sound with a very faint "zen music" sound in the back, works like a charm! And it's free so YAY! haha. Just make sure you plug your device in! My phone died this morning and I woke up haha.
