FINALLY! Disney has announced the blu-ray release date for The Little Mermaid - OCTOBER1st!

I remember seeing this movie in the theater, rewatching it until the VHS was ready to break, and almost bursting into tears the day my cassette type started to wibble and wobble in my player from so much listening!

Ariel might not be my favorite Disney princess, but she was the first princess for my generation. She was funny, smart, curious, and, above all, brave. Her relationship with Eric might have been a bit questionable, but
you couldn't deny that desire that we all share for adventure and exploring new places.

It was the movie that saved Disney, brought it back from just another film studio to a maker of animated classics.

Yes, I will probably get this the day it comes out and watch it and tear up, remembering that 8 year old girl who saw this movie and wanted to learn to draw, to swim, to sing, to dance, and to believe in magic.

Ariel wasn't my first princess--I'd seen Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella several times before then--but you're right, she was our generation's first princess. And even with the problematic elements in the storyline, it's just special. The music was amazing, and every girl who lived through the late 80s/early 90s knows EVERY WORD to that song.

And some of the boys too, I have no doubt.

Yeah, we had Sleeping Beauty (on BETA!) and Cinderella (which was bootlegged, apparently something very common among Navy brats) and I had them memorized but Ariel was OUR princess. :)

Oh yes, the boys know it! I had a Disney Sing-A-Long party and my male friends knew all the words too (though my brother surprised me with his knowledge of the Mulan soundtrack...)

LOL--I saw The Dark Crystal, of all things, on BETA! It wasn't one of "my" movies growing up, but yeah--that was my one and only experience with the BETA. They were pretty sweet.

I think it's widely recognized that The Little Mermaid has some of the best music out there. One of the guys at my church was crazy about "Kiss the Girl."

This is still my favorite Disney movie. I'd seen others before, but this was the first I'd seen at an age when I could really appreciate. As I got older, I definitely found the Ariel/Eric thing a little questionable, but I still love it and especially the music.

Cannot wait o see it on blu-ray! Have you seen Beauty & the Beast on blu-ray? It's SO GORGEOUS! It's so clear you can SEE the penciling...just...ugh. You can see how far they have come, integrating the computer animated with hand drawn, but these classic movies still hold up, and I think it is because of those amazing scores and songs.

I haven't seen any of the latest Disney re-releases yet.

Yeah, those songs definitely hold up. So much better than the stuff nowadays.
