Last night, [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat and I were playing Forza 4 and there
was a car in the game called "Ka" and I started yelling "The kaaaaaaa, the
kaaaaaaa" ala Ken in A Fish Called Wanda. I was cracking myself up
and then I said something about it and he was like "yeah, I never saw that."

So today I saw it was on Netflix streaming and I put it on, talking about
how I really loved it and used to watch it all the time as a kid. LOL.
Oh man, talk about inappropriate LOL!!!

I think the humor when I was a kid, sorta like when I would watch Ferris
Bueller
, had very little to do with the movie and more to do with the
fact that everyone was swearing so much and yelling and swearing and
yelling, at least to my 10 year old self, was HILARIOUS!

I thought Wanda held up relatively well, despite the late 80s
fashions. I had completely forgotten about the bit where Otto pretends to
be gay to make Ken leave him alone, but it really never goes very far, it
is mostly to throw Ken off the trail of the fact that Wanda and Otto are
not brother and sister.

It was still funny to me...I can't even imagine what the Monty Python
fandom of the 80s must have been going through, seeing Cleese and Palin on
screen together...for me, it just brings back fond memories of hanging out
with my grandparents and my aunt in Florida, driving around with my little
brother in the backseat, and hearing his tiny little voice
say...'ASSHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE"

Any movies you've gone back to watch from your childhood that you were
surprised the adults around you let you watch?

My parents were pretty lax about restricting what we watched. They would often take us to R-rated movies. I, vividly remember, them taking us to see "No Way Out" and there was this steamy sex scene between Kevin Costner and Sean Young and I think I got confused because it was the first time I'd seen someone's boobs other than my mom's, and I didn't realize they all looked different. I was about six, so that might explain the stupidity. And they also took us to see "Platoon" and I was slightly traumatized by that. I didn't really have nightmares or anything, it just disturbed and I refused to see that movie for a long time. The only reason they would limit anything we saw, and it was usually me and not my brother or sister, was if I did have nightmares. Like I tried to watch horror movies, but they freaked me out, so they wouldn't let me watch them.

Yeah, most of the questionable movies I saw, I am now realizing, were because of my aunt LOL. She was the "cool" aunt and let us stay up late, swear, watch r-rated movies (though nothing too over the top).

I do remember my parents buying "Excalibur" and being excited to watch it, then obviously forgetting about the sex scenes. They learned the hard way that it is way better to just ask me to leave the room rather than fast-forward through a crazy sex scene (and being 12-13 at the time, I was so embarrassed I didn't WANT to be in the room with them LOL)

Hee! I actually still feel that way. I don't like watching sex scenes with my mom.

I only saw that movie for the first time last year. Totally hilarious--it definitely holds up well.

I can't really think of any movies that I would've deemed inappropriate for my younger self. Well, not in the sense of their being "adult" movies that I was allowed to watch anyway. However, some of the stuff that was supposedly aimed at younger audiences traumatized me--I still have a phobia about steamrollers thanks to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

I LOVED ROGER RABBIT! I still have my stuffed toy. But, yeah, there is some freaky stuff in there if you're not ready for it. He was an evil toon though.

The only things I really saw (or that I can remember seeing) when I was little that I knew I probably shouldn't be watching were Mel Brooks movies, lol. Blazing Saddles and Robin Hood: Men in Tights, mostly. x)

LOL yes, I was making all the neighbor kids come over and watch "Young Frankenstein" AND "Monty Python" - it's amazing my parents didn't get into trouble! But all the dirty jokes flew over my head! I think Mel Brooks is suitable for all ages!
