I just finished The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains, and it touches on why this might be true. It's a fascinating read, once I managed to tear myself away from the internet long enough to read it.

Story of my life. Sylvia probably thinks I'm slow because I let her borrow a book and she read it in a week and I'm entering the second month I have had it checked out. She is in school though, they have like an HOUR of reading time forced upon them each day.

Yeah, as much as schools seem stuck in the past and you have to question whether they're really educating kids for the modern world, there's something to be said for "old school" education. There's nowhere else where kids are forced to focus on just one thing with no distractions for an hour a day.
