My first mix tape, given to me as a baby. It played a vital role in my musical tastes. Give a child a mix.

I was cleaning off my desk yesterday and found this randomly shoved into one of the many hiding places. My mom's friend Robyn gave this to me when I was wee little. No idea how small, but the entire A-side is In Harmony, a Sesame Street record. But the B-Side...that was a treasure trove of classic rock and weird sounds:

-- Rice Krispies commercials from the 1960s and one that had to be from the late 70s - early 80s because of the silly guitar sound on it.

-- some weird electronic voice telling me to sit back and enjoy "leisure sampler 3" and then playing "take me out to the ball game" backwards

-- Two songs by The Who: Magic Bus and Pinball Wizard (though the recording was the 1979 acoustic performance by Pete Townsend).

-- Carly Simon songs: Such a Good Boy, Maryanne (which was on In Harmony 2), De Bat (Fly In Me Face)

-- Melanie Alexander Beetle

-- Donovan Happiness Run and I Love My Shirt

-- "Old Cotton Blossom Number One" which is apparently from Showboat, though I can't find it anywhere online

-- John Hartford (??) Up On The Hill Where They Do The Boogie (this is not the exact recording, the one on my tape is MUCH MUCH faster...he is wailing on the banjo), and Electric Washing Machine

-- Alley Oop which I always associated with Scooby-Doo, but I'm not sure why. I think there must have been an episode with a goofy caveman or something...

-- live songs by Noel Paul Stookey (From Peter, Paul & Mary). He did "I Know an Old Lady", some kind of warm-up song about a desert island and a hilarious comedy bit about a tap-dancing mouse.

OOMMMGGGG that is AMAZING. Man I wish I could find all my old mixtapes. All the crap I'd stay awake because I COULD NOT go to bed until that perfect song came on the radio. Ugh I miss those days.

When I was big into concert recording, one of the first things I did was transfer the cassette over to my computer to preserve it forever. But it's just not the same...something about hearing that "PLAY" button pop up when the side was over...not being able to skip songs...

Post about your childhood mixes!!!! I want to read/listen to them :D

Oh wow. Whenever I see a casette, I'm reminded of car trips and sitting on the floor in my living room with big headphones and listening for hours and hours...

YES! My first car had a cassette player and I have never been a fan of radio so I would spend countless hours making mixtapes for my ride to and from college and other random road trips. :)

I had never had a proper mixtape (not enough allowance to buy blank tapes) but when I was slightly older I finally made my own mix with CD-Rs!! (Yes, I'm trying to fit into the post here :P)

Oh I went crazy when CD-Rs came around because I would make SO MANY MIXES! I had an entire CD case in my car just FULL of CDS that I had burned, each labeled with moods/weather etc. LOL. :)

That is so awesome. I miss mixed tapes!! Especially when I'd sit by the radio for HOURS waiting for "my song" to come on, hahaha!

Kids these days are so missing out.

Oh I have a mix tape that I made while sitting in my grandparents basement, leaning my boombox up against the TV speaker while watching MTV....talk about sound quality :)

Wooooo, mixtapes!! I think mine are hanging around my desk somewhere. Although I have no idea if I still have anything that'll still play them.

Yeah, there are no cassette players here...I think I just hang on to this one because of the memories. I did transfer all the music over to my computer awhile ago so I have it saved in all of it's analog glory.
