1. What is one of your favorite things about your country?
I think the best/worst thing is our freedoms. Not that freedom is bad but because we have so much of it, sometimes we take a lot of it for granted. But it is amazing how many freedoms we get to take for granted.

2. What is your favorite thing to do on your country's national holiday?
Not work LOL. I don't really have any 4th of July traditions.

3. What do you usually do for your country's national holiday?
Depends on where I am. If we are with relatives/family, then cooking out on the grill and maybe seeing fireworks or buying some little ones to play with in the backyard. I have a feeling this might be a low-key kind of year, just chilling at home though.

4. What is your favorite national/regional ethnic dish?
STEAK. Nothing more American than a delicious, medium rare steak with a bit of salt and pepper (though I usually dip my steak into the sour cream and butter on my baked potato too...)

5. Who is your favorite national hero and why?
I feel like I should have one but I don't?

1. How do you beat the summer heat?
A/C and staying inside. Shorts at home, skirts at work. SANDALS! I swear, if my feet get hot, I just feel gross. And also cold cold water. Or iced tea. Man, I should make some iced tea...

2. Do you have air conditioning?
oh heck yes! I mean, we try not to abuse it but once it hits those 90+ days, it is on, thank you very much, Maryland gets to hot+humid.

3. What’s your idea of the perfect summer day?
Today - mid-80s but not humid, slight breeze to keep the air moving and cool you off while walking around or hanging out.

4. What’s one thing you always seem to do every summer whether you want to or not?
Visit my in-laws LOL. And get sunburned. I'm better at not getting sunburned than I used to be but I feel like there is at least one spot I forget every year and I end up with a bit of pinkness.

5. Are you ready for the summer?
Not really. We sorta skipped spring this year. Well, it got rained out. I hope the days stay mild. Today is LOVELY.

1. What was your favorite childhood vacation?
I have a horrible memory but I think I'd have to go with my trip with my Aunt and Grandma to Disney. It was just a "Girls Only" trip. I remember riding the "Tower of Terror" with my grandma because when your GRANDMA is okay with the scary ride, how can you not be?

I also remember a group of youths running through the park and bumping into my grandma, knocking her down. Disney scooped her up pretty quick and whisked her to their medical station, backstage. Her head was bleeding pretty bad and the doctor was telling her she needed stitches. My grandma grumbled about it and my Aunt said "I can see your skull! You want me to reach in there and knock on it!" and then she relented to a trip to the local hospital.

And then I was SWORN TO SECRECY when we called to check in with my parents and grandpa that night. Don't mention the stitches or they will freak out LOL. I'm sure they found out after we got back, though I don't remember the reveal.

2. What is your dream vacation?
Right now, at this moment, a trip to Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. I watched all the coverage last week and I am dying to visit. I know I should wait though - only 1 of the 2 rides are even open! - but I can't wait to experience it. I feel like I will probably cry. I'm not a huge Harry Potter fan but that park was overwhelming in its awesomeness so I feel like with my Star Wars fandom level as high as it is, I might cry.

3. If you could take a trip around the world, what locations would you be sure to include?
JAPAN, then I want to go back to Australia, for sure. New Zealand for some Lord of the Rings sightseeing, I'd take Tim back to Alaska because he spent his younger years there, I'd love to visit Spain and France, Italy, and it might be cool to pop in to Ireland and Lithuania for family roots reasons. If Russia wasn't such a mess, I would go there. I'm pretty open to going places, if it is safe. That is the biggest thing for me. I'd feel weird going to countries where people's lives are in turmoil and showing up as a tourist.

4. Do you prefer vacations to new destinations, to familiar destinations, or a mix?
A mix. I like to go exploring and I don't mind going to someplace I have been before but have not full explored. Or someplace like Universal or Disney parks because the magic just takes me over.

5. What activities would you plan for a two week staycation?
Mostly probably video games. LOL. I don't think I could do a two week staycation, that's a LONG TIME to stay at home. Maybe 1 week of being a homebody and then a week of daily excursions to local attractions like state and national parks. That is one of the things I love about Maryland - there's parks and historical sites just lying around.

1. Do you make any kind of art or craft? Please share.
Probably the closest thing I have would be making icons, which I was starting to do again a few months ago and lost my groove again! UGH! Even bought Photoshop Elements and everything! Mostly it is just poor time management on my part.

2. Would you rather make art (paint, sing, play an instrument) or observe someone else’s art? Why?
I loved playing Rock Band with my friends and singing on that, it was just really cool to rock out together. Not the same thing, I know, computer game, but I imagine that is what it must feel like to perform music with a group. When I was a kid, I was in band and there is a thrill to creating music with a whole team. I do miss it, but I really wasn't very dedicated to it after high school.

3. If you could be really good at any creative endeavor, which would you choose to be really good at?
I've always enjoyed doodling. Would be nice if I had a bit more training but I still like to draw every now and then for fun, mostly to amuse myself. It would be nice if the pictures in my head translated to paper a bit more LOL.

4. Do you prefer recorded performances or live performances? Why?
This is a tough one! I love the polished sound and complete package of recorded music. The artists putting it together exactly how they want it. But live performances have a whole different kind of energy and you get to be a part of the show, in a way, when the band has you clap or cheer. I think it depends on my mood. I love going to concerts but I also love cranking up the tunes in my car.

5. Did you get any kind of art education in school?
I started playing flute in 3rd grade, I think. Just part of my elementary school, an optional thing you could sign up. Got to skip class to go to the music lessons room. I also had in-school art classes up through middle school.

1. Has your house been renovated?
Not by me! Actually, from what we can tell, the previous owners did a little DIY work but a full renovation probably has not happened. Especially in the kitchen.

2. Have you ever painted a room?
YES. ONCE! When we first moved in, we told Sylvia she could have her room any color and we bought paint and we invited some friends over to help and dear god NEVER AGAIN! It's so much reaching and stooping and exhausting. One room took us all day LOL.

3. Have you ever put in a new floor in a house?
Personally? No. When our dishwasher leaked a couple years ago, we had to have the floor in the kitchen replaced. Our insurance covered it, thank goodness, and we got nice tile which made more sense than wood.
This answer might change though...our downstairs bedroom has a lot of moisture in it and the flooring in there (see DIY of answer one) might not have been the best choice.

4. Have you ever worked with wallpaper?
No. No thank you. Is wallpaper still a thing?

5. Have you ever choose new colors for your flat or house?
We did for Sylvia's room but that was mostly on her. I don't really know if we could do that honestly, I'm louder, Tim is softer so I doubt we could agree on colors. I mean, I did get my red door last year, but it felt like a house with blue siding AND a blue door would have been a lot of blue so I was able to justify my choice to him and he went for it. Walls feel like a lot though.

I don't know how people build houses from scratch! TOO MANY CHOICES! My friend did this a few years ago and I think you just have to have the mind for it. I'm the person that just uses the pre-made houses in Sims.

Today's [community profile] thefridayfive questions:

1. Did you enjoy your senior year of high school?
I did! Our old band director left, who had a rivalry with the drama teacher, who also left which meant I was able to do band AND drama club without the extra IRL (and frankly immature) drama of that feud. I was drum major of the band so I got to be extra bossy. I remember dressing up for all of the pep rally week...I should probably scan some photos to share. It was a pretty good year. I just went through a bunch of cards I got when I graduated, from friends and family, and they made me feel pretty good.

2. Did you have a senior trip (high school) and were you able to go on it.
I don't think there was an official senior trip and I had no desire to go to Ocean City during "senior week". My friends and I, ever the nerd, drove out to Shenandoah National Park and camped out for the weekend. Full on roughing it. I remember hiking one day and not really factoring in that we would need to hike back and while we were trying to find our way to the campsite, I started singing Disney showtunes to keep my mind occupied. It's amazing any of them wanted to be my friend after that. We also go our first flat tire experience, my friend Amanda actually changed a tire!

3. Was graduating (from either high school or college/university) a big thing with your family or just another day? They made a big deal out of it but it wasn't like I was the first person in my family to reach the milestone. It was expected of me - both high school and college. But my Grandparents drove down from Maine to attend so that was extra special. I don't remember much about the college ceremony, but I wasn't as engaged in college life since I commuted. High school was a bit more emotional because I knew so many people there.

4. What were you looking forward to the most after graduating from either high school or college/university?
I don't really remember. I wasn't really sure what was going to happen with my life after high school except that I was supposed to go to college. In college, I guess it was moving out with my then boyfriend (such a stupid move, but go back in time and try to tell 21 old me any different, I dare you...**facepalm**)

5. Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your graduating self?
Don't move out with this guy. Be yourself for awhile, find yourself first. You got this.
...also, you are skinny AF and pretty hot.

Be warned: I'm working on a digital photo program for work and part of me wants to scan ALL my photos to keep them safe...this makes me want start scanning all the photos from my senior year, which happens to have been 20 years ago EEK! WTF! NO!

1. What are the five oldest songs on your iPod, computer, or phone (whatever device you store your music on)?
This question is a difficult one to answer because 1) I don't have all my music in one place anymore because of iTunes and Spotify being two separate things on my iPod and 2) I didn't know what they meant by "oldest" - like, what song have I had on my playlist for the longest or actual oldest song?

So, sorting by publication year (and, of course, a lot of tracks on iTunes don't have years because they were...ahem acquired another way), the song that comes up as the oldest is technically from 1934 - Anything Goes (but it is from the Fallout 3 soundtrack). This album kind of throws off the whole list, so I will mention that the next "oldest" album is The Beach Boys "Sounds of Summer" and The Beatles "Please Please Me".

As for songs that have been on here the longest...I just realized I can't really say because I got a new harddrive installed in March so I had to reinstall iTunes and lost all that data. Best guess are The Beatles albums though since I've been listening to them since I was in middle school and always add those songs immediately.

2. And the five newest songs?
See, this I will have to flip over to Spotify and see what I added from the new playlists...
Seth McFarlane has a new album coming out so he released a single on Friday - Half as Lovely (Twice as True)
MARINA released a new album but I've only listened to 'Handmade Heaven' and 'True' so far
Dylan Gardener's 'Dip' (though I'm not feeling it)
Ricky Montgomery's 'This December'

3. What’s your favorite song to sing along to?
All of them? Currently in love with 'Quarter Past Midnight' and will belt it out any time it comes on.

4. What’s the first song you ever memorized?
omg you would have to ask my Mom! Probably "Somewhere over the Rainbow" or something along those lines. I've been singing along since I was a wee little one.

5. What song is your current earworm?
'This December' gets stuck in my head SO FAST. Damn catchy hook.

1. What is your least favorite part of Spring?
The rain. So much rain. I know April showers bring May flowers, but after this long, wet, winter I just want sunshine!

2. What is your most favorite part of Spring?
Temperature is warm enough for walking! Tim and I take walks after work around our neighborhood and I just love that bit of time together. Fresh air, exercise, and just meandering for about 30 minutes.

3. What is the latest good book you've read?
Artificial Condition by Martha Wells, book 2 of the Murderbot Diaries. LOVING THIS SERIES OMG! Now I'm trying to pace myself as they are very short and there are only 4 volumes so I've set aside book 3 for some other TBR pile books...but I'm so tempted to just pick it up and read it over the weekend.

4. What are your plans for this weekend?
My brother is coming over for dinner tomorrow. He ships off next week for his first deployment as a sailor in the Navy. He goes to San Diego first, but by Christmas he will be in Japan. I am so jealous and also so very proud of him. He did really well in both Boot camp and Information school. It will be nice to see him tomorrow because I have no idea when I will see him again.

5. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck would chuck wood?
I dunno, let me ask Alexa (we've asked her this several times and it is hilarious to hear her say the answer back...I'm happy our robot overlords will have a sense of humor!)

From [community profile] thefridayfive:

1. Have you ever made corned beef and cabbage?
I usually skip the cabbage. I've never done it the traditional way, I tend to throw it in the slow cooker with some potatoes (this is happening right now actually). I LOVE corned beef, but I'm also a very "salty" person, where husband is on the "sweet" side of things so he is not as much into the cured meats. Probably best for my blood pressure to only eat it once a year.

2. Will you be tipping back a decent pint of Guinness this weekend?
No, thank you. I may have Irish roots but I'm not a Guinness fan. I always say I prefer beer I don't have to chew. But I've got plenty of other adult beverages in the fridge. I'd rather have an Irish Coffee to finish off my day.

3. Do you own an Irish wool sweater?
I do not...which kind of surprises me but I'm betting they are not machine washable and I don't buy anything that is not machine washable. Though if I DID go to Ireland, I'd probably be tempted to buy one just because I'd know it was authentic.

4. Have you ever ‘met’ the Tart with a cart (i.e. have you been to Dublin)?
NOT YET! It's on my list. I figure hopping over to Ireland would be one of the easier destination vacations since people speak English so it is high up on my to-go list.

5. Do you know what tractors, submarines and ejector seat all have in common?
I'm tempted to Google this, but I will be honest and just say NOPE!
orangerful: (Default)
Well, it took me about two hours, but I got through all of your posts! Sorry for the drive-by "likes" and random comments that were later answered in posts I had not gotten to yet! You were all VERY CHATTY! That, and I haven't checked my LJ/DW at work as much because of all our computer shenanigans and this *threat* that the IT department is watching. Tim and I are thinking about buying some cheap little Chromebooks we can take to work with us for personal stuff, like email etc.

I tried to watch the Jim Carrey show Kidding but I'm just not in the mood for that level of darkness right now. I need things that feel like they will have a positive ending or some kind of optimism. A friend at work really liked it so I watched the first 3 episodes to give it a try but I just wasn't engaged.

ANYWAY, about to head to bed, but a few of you posted the [community profile] thefridayfive questions and I want to start doing that too!

1. Do you make up a dinner plan for the coming week?
HAHAHA no. I'm usually stare at the freezer the night before, maybe two nights if I see something I want to thaw out and it will take longer, but that is about as far as I get.

2. Do you make up a shopping list and stick to it when shopping?
YES! I use the AnyList app on my phone to make shopping lists. I love it because you can also use it for recipes so you can all the ingredients from a recipe to the list really quick. But I am AWFUL at sticking to my list. I mean, I buy everything on the list, but I tend to slowly wander the store and look for any deals on things we use on the regular, like pasta or meats. I'm awful at this, so I try to not go to the store more than once every two weeks.

3. What is one thing that you always buy, but never put down on a list?
I put bananas on the list, but I don't really need to. I know we always need bananas because Tim and I take one to work and those bunches aren't very big!

4. Is there anything that you always think you are out of and come home with it to discover you already have a year’s supply on hand?
This week it is EGGS! I had a memory of making hard boiled eggs awhile ago and how that used up half the eggs...I failed to remember that I bought TWO dozen eggs the next time I was at the store...and today, eggs were on sale again so I bought another two dozen. So, yeah, we are having egg sandwiches for dinner one night this week.

5. Do you get your groceries delivered?
Nope. Hard to justify when the store is across the street from my work and there is another one right around the corner from my house. Plus, I buy a lot of fresh fruits and veg and I like to examine it first because I've had too many questionable items and I don't know how much the delivery services examine, say, the box of cherry tomatoes for bad ones in the mix (I saw one in the store today with MOLD on it!!!!).

  1. What is your favorite novel to screen adaptation?

  2. The first movie that came to mind is Fantastic Mr Fox though the movie is less of an adaptation and more loosely inspired by the book. And I'd like to say the Lord of the Rings but as I've never made it through the books, I feel sorta unqualified to list it. OH OH Jurassic Park! That one holds a special place in my heart as I adore both the movie and the book and I think they both stand up on their own still.
  3. What novel to screen adaptation did you hate, when you had liked the book?

  4. Hm, I've been very disappointed in several movie adaptations but I'm having a hard time thinking of one I truly hated. I know there must be some but I think I blocked them out.
  5. When was the last time you went to the cinema and what did you watch?

  6. Last month for MUPPETS MOST WANTED! :D Not as good as the previous one, but still SO MUCH FUN!
  7. Sugared or salted popcorn?

  8. For the movies? Salt and BUTTER!
  9. Cinema or DVD?

  10. Depends on the movie, I suppose. I find for comedies and action movies, it's better to see them on the big screen with a big crowd so you get the buzz from everyone having fun. But smaller, more "arranging matches" movies I prefer on DVD so I can watch in silence.(sic)

[livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive's questions for today:

1. Do you like to swim? I do, though I don't do it very well. I actually took "Swimming" as my gym credit in college, which meant I just spent an hour swimming laps in the pool twice a week and got credit. I never had any formal swim training but I always loved hanging out in the pool as a kid. My Grandparents had a pool in their backyard when they lived in Florida and I spent many summers there. Then when I got older, my mom got us a membership to the community pool and I would bike down there during the summer and spend all day splashing around.

2. Do you prefer salt or fresh water to swim in? Hm, probably pool water because it's easier to wash off than salt? I dunno, I'm not a beach person so I have spent more time in pools than ocean.

3. Have you ever snorkeled or scuba dived? I snorkeled when I was in Australia, off the coast of Cairns, I think need the Great Barrier Reef area...or something, it was 1998 LOL. And then I did a little snorkeling in Bermuda too.

4. What is your favorite beach food? Hm, didn't really spend a lot of time at the beach. My favorite pool food that I would buy from the little shop during "Adult Swim" was the chocolate eclair ice cream bar. I still associate those with summer time.

5. What does your favorite beach towel look like? It's my Star Wars one that turns into a bag when you're done. Very hand for carrying the wet goggles and such home afterwards.
orangerful: (snack time! // orangerful)
1. Do you snack?
Yeah, a little bit, though it's mostly on weekends when I'm home and left to my own devices. I have a few snacks hidden in my desk at work.

2. Do you prefer sweet or salty snacks?
SALTY!!!!!!! I love chips and popcorn. But I never say no when donut man stops by the library.

3. What one snack can you not resist?
Popcorn - be it microwave, day old movie theater or air-popped. OM NOM NOM NOM!!!!!!!

4. What one snack do you refuse to try?
Wasabi peas. I tried them once, yucko. Not my thing.

5. Do you tend to snack more by yourself or when you are with friends?
Um...hm, I tend to have more snack foods out when I'm entertaining, like chips and stuff. But when I think of actual snacking, that tends to happen when I'm home alone, playing video games or watching movies and just have the munchies.

1. Is there someone on your friends list that you haven't met in real life that you love completely? Hm...I dunno, I have a lot of people I really like but I don't know if I can profess my complete love for anyone I haven't ever seen or met LOL. :)

2. Have you [wanted to] date someone on LJ? uh, well, I initially signed up for LJ because my then-boyfriend was using it. Otherwise, no one I can think of was my type :)

3. Have you met someone/wanted to meet someone from LJ? Who? YES! I've met [livejournal.com profile] jellibean, [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly, and [livejournal.com profile] lostacanthus! I NEED to meet [livejournal.com profile] duncatraand [livejournal.com profile] plumxxjam someday! And I have several other IRL friends who lurk on my LJ but I knew them before LJ. :)

4. Who have you known the longest from your flist? Hm...probably [livejournal.com profile] jellibean, [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly, and [livejournal.com profile] spitefairy, though she doesn't post anymore on here :(

5. Who are you closest to? [livejournal.com profile] bittertwee and [livejournal.com profile] lostacanthus are probably my BFFs on LJ and IRL (convenient, yes?)

1. How many hours of sleep do you like to get in a night?
I usually get to bed between 12-1am. On Mondays and Tuesdays I need to be up by 7:15 to get to work on time, and I am usually fine on those 6 hours of sleep. BUT I work evenings on Wednesday and Thursday and I tend to now wake up until 10-10:30 when I don't set the alarm, so I figure I am also catching up on sleep those days too. I am more of a night person anyway so I would rather stay up late than wake up early.

2. How many hours of sleep can you survive on indefinitely?
I probably need at least 5 if I am going to survive the day without harming anyone. I feel like when I've gone to conventions, 5 was the limit...but I would need a "make up" day. It's why I always plan a buffer day between getting back from a trip and going back to work - so I can sleep!

3. Do you enjoy napping?
NOPE! I hate napping, I wake up feeling cranky and more tired than before. This is usually the first clue that I am, in fact, getting sick, if I actually want to take a nap.

4. The average amount of time it takes a person to fall asleep is seven minutes--do you tend to need more or less time than that?
Hm, that is a good question. Seven minutes is probably about right, I know it takes me awhile to get comfortable and get my brain to shut down. But unless I'm stressed out about something or just not tired, 7-10 minutes seems right.

5. If you were offered a pill that would enable you to sleep only two hours out of every twenty-four and remain fully functional, but you could never sleep more than that, would you take it?
NOPE! I enjoy sleeping, I love being all warm and curled up in the covers. And it feels like a treat when I get to sleep in a bit. I'd prefer a pill that would let me get all my work done in two hours and still get paid for a full day LOL.

Friday Five: Regrets

Do have any regrets? Who doesn't? I think the longer we live, the more time we have to look back and second guess ourselves or see other paths we could have taken. But I do have a few regrets that were huge fuck-ups that could have been avoided if I had just used my brain.

If yes, then what's your biggest regret? ugh, something so stupid I'm still not ready to talk about it on here. So dumb. Like, beyond dumb. But the second regret would be not forcing my ex-boyfriend to get help sooner back when we were living together. I was far too passive in that relationship and I let his alcoholism, his depression, and his gender issues slide by and he just got worse and worse and it's hard to forget those nights at the hospital. If I had done something sooner, like told his family, maybe things wouldn't have ended quite so tragically.

If you could, would you ever go back and change anything? Yeah, though it would be hard to convince 20-year old me to listen, I'm sure. Though I guess if me from the future came back and said "STOP IT!" I would be freaked out enough to do so. Yeah, and the dumb thing I would stop myself from doing completely. But we all do stupid things when we are in bad places.

If you could, would you go to the future to see where your decisions have taken you? SPOILERS! Plus, if movies and tv have taught me anything, it's that knowing too much about the future can usually lead to everything falling apart and changing that future.
