Playing Hearthstone beta with my bro #hearthstone

When I first heard about Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Blizzard's new online collectible card game, I rolled my eyes. I had never played any CCGs in real life and I couldn't imagine myself playing one virtually.

Then my brother texted me about the open beta and asked if I was going to try it. So I found my old Battle.net account, logged in and downloaded the game to just give it a try. And now I'm sucked into it.

I'm sure veteran card gamers will probably feel the same way about Hearthstone as most hard-core MMORPG players feel about WoW - it is very accessible, easy for casual players to pick up. That's why I love it. You can launch this game and start playing through the tutorial and you'll have the basics down in minutes. You can stay in the "Practice" zone for as long as you like to work on strategy and earn cards for your main deck, but the real fun begins when you start to challenge actual players. Since it is all linked to your Battle.net account, all your WoW friends automatically populate your player list so it would be easy to suck friends into card battles, maybe while waiting for the rest of your guild to log online for game night.

The cards all have that great WoW art look and the sound effects and sayings from your favorite in-game characters are played with each card.

I gave up on WoW itself a long time ago, I couldn't justify the cost vs actual time I spent gaming. It was fun but my Xbox was gathering dust and it felt silly to keep paying for the same game over and over when I had brand new games to try. But Hearthstone is free! As far as I can tell, it's going to be free.

Now, you can **pay** to get extra special cards, and I haven't really experienced a game against someone of that level yet. Already you can give Blizzard real money and earn a limited edition card for when the game officially launches. I've only played the Casual matches and they have been lots of fun but I am thinking that the Ranked matches in the Arena will be a lot rougher and you will find the people willing to pay real money for virtual cards playing in that section.

But right now I'm having a hella lot of fun trying to complete my rogue deck and playing against random opponents. If you're looking for a fun way to kill 30 minutes, download the demo and play a few games (nice feature: there is a clock in the game so you can see what time it is).

Have you tried Hearthstone yet? What do you think?

The Verne "Mini Me" Troyer World of Warcraft TV spot was released today.

I still think the idea that [livejournal.com profile] destertale and I had at work would have been funnier. I mean, having the midget play a gnome, pfffft not very imaginative.

Having him pay a female blood elf. That would be hilarious. Or perhaps it was too true and they were afraid to scare people....

Katchoo worked on making friends with the Consortium today then went questing with [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart for a bit. I dusted off poor Griddie and went for a quick run in the pirate cove with a guildmate. Warriors are so complicated! Especially after playing a totally OP Mage. ;-) And Griddie's gear is pretty crap because her blacksmithing is so low and nothing good has dropped for her. Except for her uber-purple shield. But it is hard to do damage with a shield. She looks cool though.

I remembered today that my original goal for Katchoo was to get her a pony. She's a tailor/enchanter so she's completely broke and [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy was doing the Winter Veil quests with me and saw that I still had my crap mount. Well, since I have to shard everything worth selling, I only have 450 gold to my name. And Inara needs her gold for...something, I dunno. I guess she could send Katchoo a cash advance on her mount. But I have a TON of rep built up for Stormwind. Katchoo is "Revered". Juts got to grind grind grind. So that is what I've spent the last 2 hours doing, running around Stormwind finding old quests I never did, soloing the Stockades (which was just fun, since I was dressed as a Santa Gnome). I'm halfway to Exalted now.

Skech wants an Elekk (elephant) which will be adorable. She's done all the quests for the Draniaei so far. They like her, for a gnome and all. She's only a 23 so she doesn't really need to worry about epic mounts quite yet. Still...

See...now I really want to make a male Blood Elf, if only to watch him DANCE!

Here's a video someone put together of the WoW characters' dances and their "source materials" side by side!

For all my WoW friends -- The Guild

And if you recognize the main girl "Codex", she was one of the potentials in s7 of Buffy. I like her more as a WoW geek ;)

Episodes 1-3 are up now!

Uh oh - a new World of Warcraft expansion has been announced! Wrath of the Lich King

I just love that one of the new things is "NEW HAIRSTYLES!" hahaha.

"Yes, yes, this gameplay and new level cap is all well and good, but I am just sick of having last years hair!"

I still need to level Katchoo up to 70 and get Inara some fattie loots. Of course, if this expansion is like the last one, I could just wait around until it comes out and getting better green drops than anything purple I might find now. *snicker*

don't look now WoW addicts -- there's now a World of Warcraft Visa card! Yes, buy stuff and earn WoW time.

For every dollar you spend, you get 1 point. About 1,500 points gets you a free month of WoW. And you get a free month just for signing up.

I'll admit. I was tempted. But they don't have a picture of a female gnome on the card, only a dude. So, I had to say no thanks.

So, World of Warcraft has this new feature online called "The Armory", where you can look up your characters and check their stats out etc. I'm easily amused (as well you know) and thought I'd post my babies profiles (I figured [livejournal.com profile] spitefairy and [livejournal.com profile] destertale might be amused.).

Oh, and note, the avatars used on these pages do not represent what my characters actually look like. (You can see actual pics of a few of them on my Flickr page.)

Inara: Gnome Rogue
Katchoo : Gnome Mage
Griddie : Gnome Warrior
Tallywa : Draenei Paladin

My favorite thing is that there are a TON of Inara's out there, and a handful of Katchoos, but I have the one and only Griddie in all of WoWzor land! Huzzah! (special thanks to Peter Abrahams for writing 'Down the Rabbit Hole' and giving Ingrid such a great nickname...)

You'll also notice that I have a problem leveling anything that isn't a gnome. What can I say? They are just too cute. I really wanted to level Tallywa, I really did, but she's just so...not a gnome. I'm trying though! Griddie is sort of in limbo while she waits for Megalodon (one of [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy's alts) to come back into play. Because warriors have lots of armor, but they need a squishy caster around to do all the damage.
orangerful: (wow talks excitedly // orangerful)
so I logged into WoW to take Katchoo, my mage, for a quick bit of solo questing. I'm running around in an area with other characters and an invite pops up on my screen. Not really thinking, I assume it's one of the people around me, and accept, thinking I can get the quest done faster. Then I see that it's a full party of 5 - actually 5 of my guild mates - and if I had been paying attention they were setting up a Sunken Temple run. Now, I am pretty n00bish to be going there (lvl 46) but I was like, what the heck!

so...3 hours later, I have a couple new blue items in my bank and I'm now a lvl 47, but I accidentally misplaced my Friday night! haha. Not that I had big plans, but wow, 3 hours flies by when you're sheeping Witch doctors!

That's okay though, because tomorrow will be get-the-apartment-back-together day! So probably no WoWz. But lots of action figure organizing, random posting, and I'll probably be on IM (or at least, near the computer with my typical "aboot" away message up).

And then '300' on Sunday!!!! *squee*!!!

Inara at the Dark Portal
Originally uploaded by orangerful.
So, WoWz has taken over my after-work life yet again. yesterday, I took little Inara into the Dark Portal to face the first new tasks of the Burning Crusade. It was Lag-o-licious over there, but still very cool. I'll probably try to go back in tomorrow afternoon, maybe it will be a little bit quieter.

Tallywa hit level 11 today and did the "Kessel Run" quest (yes, nerd humor abounds) where she got to ride the new Dranaei mount for 15 minutes. So I took screencaps to commemorate her journey, since it's a LONG way to level 40...and $100 gold. (though I'm sure if she asks nice, Inara will hook her up.)

P.S. sorry about all the WoWz babble for all you non-addicts. I'll post something more interesting this week, I promise! Like the fact that Vox now lets you do personalized banners, which means I have yet another blog I can customise and then forget about! huzzah!

Level 1 (total n00bcakes)
Originally uploaded by orangerful.
Well, it took about 45 minutes to get thru the queue (thank goodness [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy logged me in while I was driving home!) but I got online and made my new 'toon!

Everyone, meet Tallywa! She's a Dranei Palladin.

She likes long walks on the beach and smashing things with her hammer. Her turn ons are nice shoes, shaman totems, and big hammers. Her turn offs include blood elves, murlocs, and "me so horny" jokes.

The Bullpen downed Vael for the very first time last night. Here's a pic of the victorious group. (You can see Inara right up front and center with her little green buns). [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy's character, Wezzles, is slightly to the right of Inara, in the back (with the dragon head hat on, by the tree-form druid).

That was a real fun fight. Crazy, but fun!

Just thought I'd share the good news with my other WoWz playing friends!
orangerful: (wow shades // orangerful)
Today in the mail I received a small package from Playstation. I signed up for their online message board a few weeks ago after they emailed me. They dub it the "Gamer Advisory Panel". (It's by invitation only...except at the bottom of the page it says "invite your friends!"...hm)

Anyway, inside the little package was my gamer advisory card with my name on it. Also a key chain attatchment with my member number on it. Not sure exactly what they are for yet, but it amused me. But the piece de resistance (or a word like that) was my Certificate of Membership!

I'm thinking of hanging it up at my desk at work. Because it just cracks me up. It has my name printed on it and a little Playstation sticker with holographic border stuck on it.

I'm just hoping some coupons will show up next...

In other video game related news - I've been sucked back into teh WoWzors. Yes, after getting my butt handed to me by Montezuma and Catherine for over a month, I finally went back to WoWz. I made a new character - yes, ANOTHER GNOME! - but she's so cute! (Not cuter than Inara, but she ranks up there, I've decided that they are cousins). Anyway, her name is Katchoo and she's a mage. She's only a level 12 so she hasn't done too much adventuring yet. I need to decide whether she should be a fire or ice mage...[livejournal.com profile] destertale, [livejournal.com profile] dancingsalad any thoughts on that?
orangerful: (wow adorable // orangerful)
obligatory WoWz post to celebrate the fact that Inara finally got herself an epic mount. And since she's a gnome, it's a Mechnostrider. Or, as I prefer to call it, my giant robot chicken.

it matches my hair )
orangerful: (wow shades // orangerful)
This week was "Children's Week" in the land of 'World of Warcraft'. So Inara had to log in for her chance at a "free" pet. I put 'free' in quotes because I spent a small amount of money flying some orphan around Azeroth, showing him some really lame sites - an old lighthouse in westfall, the bank in Darnassus, and a waterfall. I bought him some ice cream too. Then I dropped him like a bad habit at the orphanage and picked myself up a BRAND NEW TURTLE!

yes, his name is Speedy and he's all mine. He's so cute! And he is quite fast (so it's not just a clever name!). Had to get the turtle. Inara is all about the green - green hair, green robot chicken, and now a cute green little pet.

And what WoWz related post would be complete without a couple of screenshots? )
orangerful: (wow talks excitedly // orangerful)
I actually took this test awhile ago when [livejournal.com profile] dancingsalad posted it but forgot to post results. I took it again and got pretty much the same results as last time...though I have to admit, work really eats into your WoW time!

How addicted to WoW am I? )
orangerful: (holiday yoda // orangerful)
Well, let me tell you, yesterday all of Maryland was running around going "OMG IT'S GONNA SNOW/SLEET/HAIL/FREEZE and we're all going to die!" The weathermen said that it was going to be a bad storm with ice and there was a weather advisory, schools closed early...and it snowed for about 5 minutes, then just sorta drizzled the rest of the day. Ridiculous really.

I mean, I know it's a rough job to be a weatherman, but to be wrong so many times...it's like living in the 'boy who cried wolf' story!

Played waaaay too much WoW yesterday. They just put up all the winter decorations for Winter's Veil. Inara was turnd into a xmas gnome and she rode on top of a reindeer. It was the cutest thing ever. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy bought some snowballs, and we had fun throwing them at each other. I got pwned while we were in the monostery, and he managed to screencap it! That is premeditated right there!

West County is having their big holiday party tonight! Which means we get to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart in person! haha. It also means lots of yummy foods and silliness. What happens in the library, stays in the library. ;)
