What Book Got You Hooked was featured today on [livejournal.com profile] whedonesque because Neil Patrick Harris submitted his childhood favorite. But there are lots of other celebrities worth checking out (Stephen Colbert, John Krasinksi and BJ Novak, to name a few).

I love their comments and wish that parents and teachers would take them to heart -- sometimes the best book is one shared with a loved on or read just for the pleasure of reading. Sometimes I think adults try to hard to figure out what is "best" for a child, and they discount some books that would entertain a new reader and inspire them to try other things.

So, flist, I'll ask you, after you've looked at this little website, do you remember the book that got you hooked?

Hmm. Possibly Firesong, as it was the first hardcover book I've had that I stayed up all night for-- long before the days of Harry Potter, and it really sparked my love for fantasy.

But really? The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham because those were the first books I remember reading out loud to my father, and I still remember some of the lines. I loved those books.

no one can deny the power of Seuss. Even though my mom hated reading Green Eggs & Ham, I made her anyway!

I chased my parents and family members around with my much loved copy of "The Saggy Baggy Elephant" until they hid it from me and wouldn't give it back. lol.

Reading for myself? The first series I can remember DEVOURING and freaking out about getting more was Nancy Drew. All incarnations. (Even back to the really old ones). I even read all the Hardy Boys books as well (again even the old ones). I have a huge personal collection and read all the ones the libraries in FOUR counties had. :P

My preschool love was The Ice Cream Cone Coot and Other Rare Birds by Arnold Lobel.

I can't remember a time when I didn't read. I always loved The Westing Game, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Hiding Place and many others.....

My all time favorite is To Kill a Mockingbird.

As a little kid I blew through every Curious George book in the local public library (I remember they had looooog face-out displays for picture books.)

The ones that got me hooked though were the Little House books (I so identified with Laura with my brown hair), and the Anne of Green Gables series. Like her, I had a temper and a highly active imaginiation. Both Laura and Anne seduced me into wanting to be a writer.

Reading A Wrinkle In Time in fifth grade (we read Newbery Award books as the main part of the curriculum--pretty good concept) which, together with watching the animated Star Trek series, got me into science fiction and fantasy. Thus sealing my happy fate as an uber-nerd.

I somehow managed to never read the Little House books...dunno why, just never caught my eye. I did read a few of the Anne of Green Gables books and remember enjoying them. I always forget about Anne...should be RAing that one to little girls!
