So we had our programming meeting today at the library and I have sorta volunteered myself to do a Young Adult program in August - the theme? MySpace, blogging, and personal websites. So now I need to figure out exactly what I want to focus on. And I have to write a blurb for our library happenings...which is due March 1st. So, blurb first, program later!

I figure I'll focus on MySpace, since that's the hot thing right now, but also mention Livejournal, Xanga, MSN Spaces, and anything else? I want to give them tips on customization while sliding in some safety tips. Or something. I dunno. I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I just need to pick something to focus on. I was thinking about the whole personalizing component so I can plug the HTML books we have in the branch. But if any of you that are more familiar with MySpace have ideas, let me know! Is it just basic HTML that is used to edit backgrounds? I still haven't figure out how to do that. I also need to learn about the privacy features that are set up on there....

That was about it for today. I finished my "In Charge" training so now I can be in charge starting in March. Crazy, huh?

Aaaaaaand yeah. Tuesdays are long days. I am sleepy.

yeah, I want to tell them about it and make it fun so that they actually listen. I can already tell that alot of parents are having that knee jerk reaction of "YOUR BANNED" sort of thing, and we all know how well that works. I think so many of us have grown up with computers that we forget that you aren't born knowing that information is good to hand out.

How about... "the evils of MySpace?" haha.

You can do it!! You've got a week to blurb... just make it broad enough to give you LOTS of options and room to plan. ;D

heehee, I'd love to say that MySpace is just plain evil and they should all get LJs buuuut I doubt they will believe me hehe. So I'm just going to push for the whole "privacy" setting thing and how to now get yourself killed by a psycho.

Yeah, and like someone else said, be realistic about it and don't over-exaggerate the dangers too much. But remind them that there are some shady-ass people on MySpace. Ew. You're "young and hip" (as the old people say, haha).. I don't think you'll have a problem getting the kids to relate to you.

Ooh! I just remembered an entry my friend posted in her journal about creepy MySpace people who had contacted her... click here. *shudder* shady, shady, shady...

my goodness! how...how do their brains function? And who the hell says "holla"???

oh and I'll gross you out even more - the custodian found pictures printed from MySpace in the mens room today. EEEEEWwwww. Of course, the girls posting pictures of themselves in their underwear was sort of stupid and what do they expect guys to do with stuff like that? Message them to discuss Neitzche and philosophy? riiiiiight. But now the library is worried because the filters that we use to block pornography sites doesn't know how to handle MySpace.

Steer them toward Live Journal! Myspace is but a false evolutianary track. And I second everyobody else. you can do it! And teach them about the danger in a realistic fashion. My brother -in-law laid it on so thick with my nephew that I think my nephew doubts whatever he says.

yeah, that's what I want to avoid doing. Right now there's all this CNN coverage saying that MySpace is evil (just like those kids and their rock and roll and their movies and TV!) and I just do not believe that. Driving is bad for you too, because people die every day in car accidents! No driving either! And too many kids are fat, so no eating!

there, I've solved all the worlds problems.

Hey, that's cool. And don't worry, you have plenty of time to figure it out!

How about advice about what *not* to broadcast to the world? Because even the "private" stuff is accessible, ultimately. (I know someone who was fired because of something her co-worker accessed on a supposedly restricted part of her blog). And also, you have to consider that what you post sticks around forever (and who wants their 16 year old self on display for all eternity? Thank god the internet wasn't around when I was a teenager..) Or at least you could do some research as to how easy it is to access blogs which have been deleted. (doesn't google have some archiving thing where they can retrieve screen shots of old websites?)

i've heard about that archiving thing, is that why I can only find some pages in "cache" mode and not when I click on the regular link.

It is scary, even more when people put really stupid comments for the public to see. But I think it's because they assume that only their friends would ever bother looking at their MySpace, but there are people who just surf MySpace, I guess...it's very condusive to that, you just keep clicking thru on your friends...if the page wasn't so painful to look at, you could do it all day!

oh, I thought I told you that? Yeah, apparently that convetion has a history of losing bookings because they never sell enough tickets in advance or something. I was upset but at the same time, it sorta made my decision for me haha. Though it might still be fun to go with the Firefly people there.

I just e-mailed to see if anyone could take my Sunday in March so we can have a three day weekend to goof off.

maybe his lady friend's new allegedly horrible movie shamed him so.

i may head to giant a little while before you get home, so i can get started, so we aren't there so late. so you can drive or walk over when you get home, and will still be able to get any stuff you need and help me finish up.

do you have a problemo w/ that? are you dyin to go the distance w/ me? those were some poorly choosen words on that last part.
