Oh facebook chat, you are so totally unnecesary. First of all, you're hidden in the corner so I do not notice you. Second, when someone sends you a message it does not alert you in any way so they could sit there forever waiting. Third, I have IM Facebook. If I wanted to talk to these people in real-time, I would already be doing so. Stop trying to make me connect against my will!!!!

Also, has anyone logged into MySpace recently? Dear gods, they totally ripped off Facebook. Well, they tried but failed miserably because it is still MySpace so there are flashing ads and crap all over the place and in the center is a horrible Facebook rip-off shoved into place.

My Twitter "following" list is growing. I made a random comment about BSG the other night (Don't worry, Hot Dog and Racetrack will protect us!) and someone added me out of the blue and I can't quite figure out how he found me since he is not following any of my other friends. (One night I'm going to actually keep track of how long it takes me to go through my Flist, Facebook, DCSWCC forums, and Twitter followers and then be very depressed).

that reminds me - OMG NEW BSG TONIGHT!!

I've been doing cataloging homework all afternoon. It's actually not so bad, just lots of flipping through the manual and trying to figure out what rules to follow. The MARC records are confusing because I'm supposed to know what all the numbers mean and I do not. But my prof. gave out lots of links to tutorials and such. so I'm playing with those now.

Yes yes, back to work.

So, is there a word (and if not, someone should invent one) for a person on MySpace who's 'Top Friends' list consists entirely of "famous people"? or bands?

I know a person who friends anything and everything is deemed a "MySpace whore". But it seems these should have different terms...

Just logged in because Jewel Staite got herself a MySpace, and I had to friend her (yes, if I don't know you, you can't friend me, but I'll friend people I don't actually know...what?) and then I played with my friends list and made it all famous people (except for [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy and [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz cuz it felt wrong taking them down! haha)

Words cannot describe how much I hate MySpace. I just spent an INSANE amount of time trying to log in to the damn thing because [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz just made a new page and wanted me to approve his friends request. After attempting to log in, having it crash my browser, and then having to wait a minute for my internet to come back, I finally got to the requests page, only to find that I had 4 requests waiting and somehow NEVER recieved and email telling me so. FOUR! From September!

Then I tried to approve the requests - error error error. Ugh. Tried to read a message and reply to it - error error error. *headdesk* Tried to use IE instead of Firefox - same problems.

AAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Finally got the requests approved and wanted to see my friends page - yeah, not gonna happen.

I hate that site. I hope it dies in a fire.

I definatley must have one fo the Star Wars Dashboard Drivers. Obviously, I should get Yoda. I wonder how they work...yes, *adds to shopping list*

Got my credit card bill for the month, did quite a bit of damage, what with starting the billing period off with a concert, buying a new stereo, and having to fix my car's AC and a flat tire. Yowza. But, hey, it's summer! I'll go back to my more thrifty self once fall rolls around and I can use that "well, xmas is soon, so I'll wait" excuse...which never works but still!

Serenity won the Hugo award for best drama ("long form" hehe). Joss couldn't make it but Morena Baccarin was there and apparently she brought Joss' speech with her.

In other Joss related news, we finally saw the episode of Veronica Mars that Joss guest starred in! His acting was Kevin Smith-esque.

[livejournal.com profile] jimithingy showed me today that Jay Clifford, lead singer of Jump (Little Children) has got new tunes up on his MySpace! I really like his voice, and I was so bummed when Jump stopped touring last year, so this makes me so very happy. Though I'm a bit miffed Maryland/Virginia/Pennsylvania got NO LOVE on the tour. :( The closest show is NYC and that's a nice 5 hour drive. Blah.

So, I won $10 today at work! It's because I got a "Bravo" last month for helping with some Summer Reading Club stuff and they drew my name out of a hat and voila, $10! I've already spent it on star wars stuff though (I should be getting a Yoda tie and comics this weekend).

Want to waste gobs of time? Looks like lots of Colbert Report "The Word" segments have been uploaded to YouTube....yes, I could lose a whole day. This one on Wikipedia cracks me up though.

tomorrow is [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz's birthday. Yowza, the kids like 17! and 40 feet tall! He says we will go out for sushi for his birthday dinner. Should be fun. :) I love chillin' with my bro.

Zach Braff has an official MySpace now...I want to add him to my friends list but I know that logging into that evil thing will crash my internetz. Ah well, I just want everyone to know, that if I asked Zach Braff to be my friend - he would say yes!

and now, I am really really really tired. If the library is going to be hot and stuffy tomorrow, I am not looking forward to that adventure. Makes for a long day.

Okay, so what do you do when you get a friend's request from another person and go to their site and realize they've done the same thing you have - i.e. they made up a weird display name that isn't their real name and you click on the photos section and you recognize them and actually wouldn't mind friending them except for the fact that you have no freakin' clue what their name is anymore.

But I do recognize him...I think he was in drama, one of the tech guys. He's two years younger than me...should I just fess up and message him and say "i've forgotten your name" when obviously he remembers mine as he had to do a search for it...([livejournal.com profile] verdatum, [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m, help me out here!!!)

btw - I'm going to special hell, I....I just spent 3 hours making my MySpace site prettier. Yes! I know! *hangs head in shame* But but....[livejournal.com profile] jimithingy gave me the CSS coding and I went thru and found pretty colors and then I used my icons to represent my interests and made a little mini-banner to link to my graphics site...so it's not fugly! I swear.

though you really have to like green to look at it.

You know what sucks, is that I don't get to see my profile. On LJ, when I make it all pretty, that's what I get to see. But no, on MySpace, I get to see that fugly page they have set up with all those adds and "cool new people" and other lame crap and only you, the outsider, gets to see my pretty page. LAME LAME LAME!

today I...

...helped someone find a copy of 'hitchhiker's guide' and totally fangirled at him. Though, to be honest, he seemed interested in my babbling about the radio drama and how much I loved the books. He had already seen the new movie and had watched about half of the original BBC miniseries, so he's on his way to becoming a fan, I can tell. It makes me so happy to see those books getting checked out. I need to re-read them.

Speaking of books, I almost started crying on my lunch break today. I've only got about 40 pages left in 'The Book Thief' and it's just as good as all the reviewers said. I was a bit worried. I adored 'I am the Messenger' and bought this one because it was his new book. But, while 'Messenger' took place in modern day Australia, 'Book Thief' is about Nazi Germany. I wasn't sure if I would want to read it or where it would go that would be new. It's a beautiful book. Zusak has a way of writing prose and making it feel like poetry. It's just such a fantastic read. I don't want to spoil any of it for you, but if you have a chance, go to your local library or spin by Borders and grab a copy. I think you'll want to own this one so you can lend it out afterwards. I'll probably blubber over it after I'm totally finished with it because I can already tell I'm so very attached to these characters, I don't want to see them go. (FYI - you can read the first couple chapters from each of those books on Markus Zusak's homepage. Definately reccomended)

We got a new children's book, an illustrated version of the holiday classic 'I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas'. I emailed my supervisor about having a holiday sing-a-long storytime this year. And she said that was a great idea. That song is awesome. I will have to get [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz to send my the mp3 again so I may listen to it, even though it's practically summertime.

I also attempted to help someone who actually had no desired to be helped. I cannot stand people who wish to be ignorant. What is that? Especially teenagers. Haven't they seen enough stereotypes of the dumb teen who doesn't care? Don't they want to be something more impressive? Apparently not. All this person wanted was a note that said we couldnt' find anything so they could leave. And they refused to actually answer my questions, since I was trying to find a way to get around their issues and focus on the real project they were working on. But no, they just wanted to be slackers. ("when's this due?" "um, tomorrow, we had 2 days to work on it but I was sick one day and the other day I um...like...um, didn't go cuz of something")

*sigh* it's a good thing I know people like [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz, [livejournal.com profile] _____saveferris, and the pages at work otherwise I'd be concerned about teenagers of today.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to attempt to add a song to my MySpace profile so I can be like [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy hip and with it.
orangerful: (who am I this time? // orangerful)
[livejournal.com profile] banazir posted a bit on how much Rupert Murdoch just paid for MySpace and Facebook and it got my brain turning again about why I would never use these services.

I like to be anonymous.

It's not that I try to hide my age/race/sex when I post about things, but it's almost more amusing to have people not know right off the bat. I'm sure the way I talk and the icons I use give it away most of the time, but you never know. I feel like MySpace and Facebook are all about SHOWING us who you are, the emphasis on pictures. It's about posting your photos, your bio, who you are, who your friends are, how many you have yadda yadda. It feels far more superficial.

Now, I wasn't around when Livejournal first came about. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy said that it was a very big deal for awhile. Perhaps in those days it was more photos and OMG AM I HOT IN THIS OUTFIT! and bright pink on yellow backgrounds. But not in the circles I move in.

I've probably said this before, but when it comes to many fandoms, especially music fandoms, a lot of times girls get discounted for only liking a band/show because of the hot male lead etc. Or she becomes a thing of wonder when she happens to be a fan of sci-fi or fantasy, especially to the extent that I am with the collecting and such. And it can detract/distract from any actual point you're trying to make. It's one reason I love my username - it's a pretty unisex name.

And I know that sounds sorta creepy - ooooh Sam likes to be anonymous, she goes into the old man chatroom and pretends to be an old man! It's not that. But if you've ever had something you sorta "pfffft" by someone else because of something as simple as how you look, your age, your job, etc you understand what I mean.
orangerful: (whatever edna // orangerful)
So we had our programming meeting today at the library and I have sorta volunteered myself to do a Young Adult program in August - the theme? MySpace, blogging, and personal websites. So now I need to figure out exactly what I want to focus on. And I have to write a blurb for our library happenings...which is due March 1st. So, blurb first, program later!

I figure I'll focus on MySpace, since that's the hot thing right now, but also mention Livejournal, Xanga, MSN Spaces, and anything else? I want to give them tips on customization while sliding in some safety tips. Or something. I dunno. I might have bitten off more than I can chew. I just need to pick something to focus on. I was thinking about the whole personalizing component so I can plug the HTML books we have in the branch. But if any of you that are more familiar with MySpace have ideas, let me know! Is it just basic HTML that is used to edit backgrounds? I still haven't figure out how to do that. I also need to learn about the privacy features that are set up on there....

That was about it for today. I finished my "In Charge" training so now I can be in charge starting in March. Crazy, huh?

Aaaaaaand yeah. Tuesdays are long days. I am sleepy.
orangerful: (no stairway // orangerful)
Microsoft has created their own "MySpace" cleverly called "MSN Spaces". I do not know why but I find this very very amusing. They all have that stream-lined windows look to them, which is already more appealing than the MySpace crude boxes. Then again, it is run by satan.

Livejournal is still bestest of all. But I think that it's not quite as easy to alter if you're not the least bit computer saavy or have your own home computer. Where as with MySpace, I feel like it takes less skill to alter your background etc...though it takes some skill to make it a teensy bit viewable.

What is with little girls and hot pink? Think outside the color box here people!
orangerful: (smile // orangerful)
More Joss induced giggling. Wonder Woman script must be due soon or something.

Had a wonderful Valentines Day. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy had said he wasn't going to get me more than chocolates, but I came home to a bouquet of roses, a choxie heart full of dark chocolate meltaways, a little heart tin with Chewbacca on one side and Yoda on the other, a yoda action figure WITH yoda hologram figure (that has to be hard to find), 2 iPod excessories, AND SERENITY ON PSP!

I am so SO spoiled...have I mentioned that? I mean, seriously, it's a bit ridiculous. I cannot figure out where I went so right...perhaps it was in my previous life....maybe I was mother theresa...no wait, she was alive when I was alive....uuuuh...

Someone from high school found me on MySpace. made me do a double take when I opened up my "new messages" thing, as I was expecting it to be one of my co-workers that I had harassed over the weekend, and there was a friend from 7 (?) years ago. haha. At least it was someone I liked...what do I do when the annoying people that I could never stand start messaging me?

and last night, when I should have been going to bed, I made pretty banners - wanna see?

it's like living in WoWz - Hasbro is having a "Galactic Hunt" this year, with special figures that have stickers and if you buy all the figures and send in their UPCs you'll get a super special George Lucas stormtrooper...

I'd laugh...if I wasn't slightly interested.

ToyFair started this week too, RebelScum has photos of the event here

[livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly pointed this lovely site out to me the other day - it's a Harry Potter quote index! A fun time waster if ever I saw one.

both [livejournal.com profile] toothlesshag and [livejournal.com profile] zaubervz got out of work/school tomorrow because of the snow piled up outside. So far, no word from the library. I was hoping for at least a delayed opening/start time since it's probably all going to freeze up overnight.

Last night, we lost power around 2am. I was all snuggled into bed, playing one last round of Lumines and them that lovely powering down sound, so I had to hop out of bed and help [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy shut down all the electronics before they got zapped. Which, it turns out, wasn't too big of an issue as the power pretty much stayed off until about 10am this morning. It was so very cold. Also, neither of us got much sleep because we are so used to having all these random noises - a fan, the heat, the computers humming, the dishwasher - so much white noise and suddenly silence. [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy told me that I breathe very loudly, ala Val Kilmer.

So, I went to update my MySpace page today because it's hip for the kids. Actually, whats really funny is that all these people at work half a MySpace - half because they are part of the online generation and the other half because they are parents trying to figure out the online generation. Anyway, I still do not understand the attraction to MySpace. Everytime I log on, it gives me error messages and "cannot find" and i know full well it's right there. I thought it might be Firefox but [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m said that's what he uses and if it caused that much trouble for him, why keep doing it. Maybe my computer just rejects MySpace. Which is fine because livejournal is just so much better. A million times. I mean, I attempted to read the blogs page on MySpace and it was just icky to look at. Yes, I am a broken records - MySpace is lame, yes of course I have one, please be my friend, then get a livejournal.....

updated my graphic novel read/ing list which probably means i should post something to [livejournal.com profile] novel_graphics!

And don't forget about the oh-so-fun personality meme!

My brother is adorable so very very cool

I wish he'd post those pics to LJ though, I freakin' HATE MySpace sooooo much.

[livejournal.com profile] zaubervz, if you're reading this - GET A FREAKIN' SHUTTERBOOK or FLICKR ACCOUNT!

Okay, like, half the librarians in this branch have MySpace accounts now, it's ridiculous. And, of course, I'm friending all of them. But I truly hate MySpace. Why can't they all get LJ accounts. LJ is so much prettier. No ads or pop-ups. it's free and pretty. And I hate logging into it while I'm at work cuz they have Internet Explorer and it doesn't block pop ups like Firefox. Ugh.

HARRY POTTER IN 6 HOURS!!!!!!! w00t!

EDIT: okay, you have to have MySpace to see those pics - but don't worry, I did teh evil hotlink below so you can see them without signing up.

so you don't have to sign up for evil myspace to see what I'm talking about )

[livejournal.com profile] jimithingy yet again earns his "best boyfriend ever" badge for driving down to the comic shop for me and buying not 1, but all 3 covers of the new Serenity comic.

He roxors my soxors.

Is it 5pm yet?? I want to see the pretty pictures!

edit damian got one, so I got one too My MySpace.
I still don't get it. What am I supposed to do with it? Muscians can upload music, can I upload music?

OMG there is this really annoying woman here right now. She's got like a 2 or 3 year old with her and she's forcing her to play on the computer. It's just so frustrating! I'm sure that little girl would be much happier if her grandma offered to read to her! But no. She's attempting to explain to a child who can hardly speak that she needs to sit still and press buttons to play a game that she is hardly interested in.

And then when the grandma tried to sign on and realized she needed a library card, she complained about that. Then she proceeded to tell us that you don't have to do that at Provinces down the road, which is untrue. Don't argue with us, we frickin' work her.

Anyway, this is NOT what a library is for. Buy your kids a damn PS2 and use the computers for real information. Or at least go to PBS Kids where they can learn something. Especially if they are little. They'll have plenty of time to rot their brains when they are old enough to SPELL cartoonnetwork.com.

*stabs PCs*
Oh great, now their getting DVDs. Grandma is a great babysitter. The little girl just wants some attention, she's following the other little girls around.

I also overheard a sister telling her younger sister to "not get so many books, you look like a geek." To which the sister replied "well, I have a couple DVDs". *headdesk* Be a geek and proud girl!
