my brain is so fried. I just worked on homework for the past 3 hours. I did statistics stuff, which would not have been so bad if the assignment didn't have 40 different "people". I am still figuring out the whole frequency, mean, mode, variance etc.. stuff and when you make a mistake with 40 different things to correct...it takes awhile. I need to buy batteries for the graphic calculator too. Using the computer one just takes forever. Plus, I was supposed to square a bunch of stuff and it was just annoying to type the number twice every time.

Then I switched over to the Ref course where we are learning Dialog. It's an old-school kind of database search machine. Reminds me of the time I tried to learn HTML and then [livejournal.com profile] jimithingy introduced me to FrontPage. I still have my little bit of HTML knowledge, but THANK GOODNESS that I have FrontPage or I'd never get anything done. I mean, this Dialog is fine for this class, but I am SO happy the library has normal databases for me to use for patrons. Dialog is hardcore though because it searches a bunch of databases at once time. But it looks like an MS DOS program.

Seriously, if you want to find an article, you have to type something crazy like this:

?s kristen(w)bell AND heroes NOT veronica(w)mars

and it's reply would be something like

s1 200

And then you've got to work from there and narrow it down before you can type in the code to see the citations or whatever.

It's just silly because you need to have about 10 different windows open while your searching - the Dialog program, the Dialog helpsheet site that tells you what hte codes are for all the different search terms, the specific page for the database you want to search to see what number it is for that...

It's clearly meant to be used by business people. It even tells you how much your search cost you. Luckily, Drexel is footing the bill. Still, talk about pressure!

I think I'm going to go watch 'Dexter' and let my brain shut down. I'll finish up this homework tomorrow and Friday, because Saturday I work and Sunday is 'Taming of the Shrew' and the Shakespeare Theater, yay!

Hm...I need to make some sort of school related icon for posts such as this...

Hate the dialog.

BTW, did I tell you I've got a patron named Buffy?

There is a creepy homeless guy named Buffy that comes into our branch every now and then.

It's a girl. She recently moved to the area to marry her honey, whom she met online. They both come in pretty often, and she adores me and says I'm a "Fred".* Then last week, of course, she came over to me after I was dealing skillfully with some... interesting... patrons, and she said, "How can you stand it? I couldn't do your job."

* As in the mailman Fred from The Fred Factor by Mark Sanborn. It's a compliment.

Meet Fred. (http://www.amazon.com/Fred-Factor-passion-ordinary-extraordinary/dp/0385513518/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-6745466-0823962?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192221927&sr=1-1)

Not long after Ms. Buffy told me 'bout this book, I won the author's next book at the OLA conference. (Still haven't read it.)

Oi!

FrontPage? Ouch.

May I suggest Dreamweaver & Fireworks/Photoshop!? FrontPage puts far too much extraneous markup in the code. I've run accross files that, having stripped out all of the unnecessary FrontPage garbage, went from 50KB+ in size down to less than 5KB.

yeah, I would love to use the other programs you mentioned, they need to just magically appear on my computer and I'd be good to go haha.

I could probably figure out the code myself for most of what I do on my website. It's just tables and such and then graphics. Not really rocket science HTML. I'm just far too lazy haha. Maybe when I overhaul it...
