As I have mentioned many times, I am dabbling in the world of tabletop roleplaying games. Like many people, my main awareness of this genre of game was linked to Dungeons and Dragons, the biggest brand name of the TTRPG world. Even if you’ve never played a TTRPG, chances are you have at least heard of D&D. It has gained a lot of popularity right now because of YouTube shows, like Critical Role, celebrities playing for charities, and the somewhat tropey tv episodes.

I have been watching the Oxventure games since they started in 2017. They were my first introduction to actually seeing D&D in action in a way that I would want to play it. Light, fun, and relatively free of consequences – this is because Johnny Chiodini is a master GM and knows when and where to ignore the rules and focus on the act of collaborative storytelling.

I’m starting this off talking about D&D because the reason the Blades in the Dark play-through was so interesting to me was how much it differed from D&D in its entire approach to storytelling and mechanics.

The premise of the game is a group of criminals set in a somewhat steampunk city are called together to perform a heist. There are criminal types they pick from and they have certain skills based on their type. Instead of meticulously planning their actions prior to the heist though, when players come up against an obstacle they can flashback to the planning scene and talk about what they did to prepare for this moment. It’s like every heist movie you’ve ever seen, a smash cut from the group outside the vault to them sitting around a table the day before, building the lockpicking mechanism. It is a very smart design because it keeps the forward momentum of the story while still playing a game.

And, bonus, Johnny gets to play this time and Luke Westaway GMs! Luke does a wonderful job setting the tone, creating NPCs and keeping the consequences interesting when players want to take a risk (another cool mechanic in the game…looks, just watch so you can see it in action!)

What I’m saying is if you’ve only ever played/watched D&D, you might be surprised by the different ways a TTRPG can be played. And if you’ve watched D&D actual plays and they were not your thing, you might still want to give this Blades in the Dark video a try. It’s just 2 hours total for the single adventure and the group has come up with some memorable characters. Perfect for watching on your lunch break or as you are winding down in the evening and need some laughs…and crime.

Hello everyone, how is your quarantine, stay-at-home (unless you’re an essential worker than many blessings upon you and I’m sorry people are assholes) going?

I am one of the lucky ones, at home but still getting paid. The biggest stress for me is just being motivated to do anything. You don’t realize how much structure the work week brings to you until it doesn’t exist.

At first I was like “I’ll just get up like any other day.” which slid into “well, maybe I’ll just sleep in a bit” and that quickly became “whatever, I’m up when I’m up.” – which wouldn’t really have mattered so much if my body didn’t feel like absolute rubbish after two days of this behavior. I found that the mornings I had to wake up for Teams meetings for work were the days I usually felt the most like myself. But that was just twice a week, what was worth getting out of bed for otherwise?

Two words – Live Stream.

I watch three YouTube channels pretty faithfully – OutsideXbox, OutsideXtra and Dicebreaker. They are located in the UK so their live shows would happen when I was at work and I couldn’t join in the fun. A couple months ago, Dicebreaker started their D&D sessions and premiered the videos on Saturday mornings, and I was finally able to watch live while the YouTube chat scrolled by. It felt amazing to watch along with other fans, chatting with them and the Dicebreaker team about the game. Extra laughs, inside jokes and just a great community experience.

Then the virus hit and we were told to stay home. And bless them, OutsideXbox, OutsideXtra and Dicebreaker not only took their gear home with them, they upped their livestream game, creating content for most days of the week. And since they were on UK time, their afternoon streams became my reason to set my alarm for the morning.

In addition to all of that, Luke Westaway, part of the OutsideXtra team, who has been dabbling in music making for the past couple years, started doing personal live streams of him making music. A small but mighty group joined in his chat, some with actual music theory advice and some just enjoying seeing the process live, but all of us happy to escape reality. A few of us even started a side Discord channel, giving us a place to keep talking and keep interacting when the streams weren’t happening.

I’m not home alone either, but the other two people in my family are more introverted than me and are just doing their own thing. I miss having people around. I usually work in a public library, where people are always chatting, laughing, and I really miss it. Its been nice to hear other voices, random giggles and smiling faces. Sometimes, I’ll just put the videos on in the background to feel like I’m just somewhere else. And I know I can count on this group to keep it fun.

It is a weird time, and as I settle in for another stream of D&D played live, I start to think about when I used to watch live TV and the fandom community and while I love my on-demand life now, it makes me realize how much I miss that part of being into a show, needing to watch it at a certain date and time and then talking about it with everyone. But that’s a post for another time.

So yes, thank you to these channels and thank you to the awesome fans who have such a fun time in chat, throwing around puns and banter.

What little things are you doing to give your day structure? Or are you just taking it one day at a time? What comforting things are you watching, reading, or listening to?

Feels like a lifetime ago! I want to be out of the house and around people again!!

Look, I love my husband and my stepdaughter but I miss OTHER people. If that makes any sense.

The Dicebreaker D&D livestream gave me life this morning (literally, I set an alarm to wake up) and getting to chat with other fans while the episode aired was lovely. Might do it again tomorrow if Luke does another music stream, which I thought he posted about but now I can't find it...

Anyway, what were you up to a month ago? A year ago? What was life like them?

Dicebreaker did a giveaway contest while I was on the road to Florida. All you had to do was like and share a post on Instagram so I figured what the heck! Mostly wanted to just spread the word about the lovely YouTube Channel/website.

BUT IT TURNS OUT I WON! :D

Of course, now it is a race against time as they try to send my prize from the UK to USA before Thursday so I can participate in the live stream. They are sending me an Owlbear D&D miniature to paint "with" them on Thursday morning (well, my morning, their afternoon).

Anyway, best part was them trying to figure out how to pronounce "orangerful" and, for some strange reason, going with a hard "g" sound. You can watch the clip here (because of course I found it and tweeted it)

Did I mention I've never painted miniatures before? LOL. Just ordered myself some paints off of Amazon. Fingers crossed that the OwlBear arrives soon!

NEW FULL LENGTH TRAILER!

So much fan service. A nice butt shot of Cavill AND the bathtub scene? LOLOL.

Seriously though, I am so excited for this series. Between this and the new season of Expanse, December is going to be good.

I had no intention of watching Fantastic Beasts. I had fallen out of love with the HP fandom after the 7th book. When it was announced it would be a 5-film series, I decided I wasn't interested in committing to yet another story set in Rowling's magical world. But then [livejournal.com profile] rogueslayer452 linked to Pop Culture Detective and I started watching the videos on that channel and stumbled upon this one:

So I picked up the DVD at work on Friday and watched it over the weekend.

side note: my new movie watching strategy is to pretend everything is a limited run Netflix series and just watch them in hour chunks. This idea used to bother me, felt like I was doing a disservice to the film maker's not watching their entire work in one sitting. But now I've decided that maybe their film makers and their editors are doing me the disservice because I don't have time for 2+ hour movies on a regular basis.

ANYWAY! I watched the movie and I did enjoy it!

Have some bullet points:

spoilers )

Overall, despite my nitpicks, I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would but I would still only say 3 stars. I did put the sequel on hold to see if Redmayne's performance was altered at all. Hopefully I will have that for this coming weekend's breakfast viewing.

Did you see Fantastic Beasts? Has anyone seen any interviews with Redmayne or Yates or Rowling about this character of Newt Scamander and his portrayal in the movie? I'm wondering if this was all in JK's script or Yates' interpretation or just Redmayne's take on it.

As you all know, I'm a big fan of British YouTube video game shows OutsideXbox and OutsideXtra. Occasionally on these channels, the group will get together and play D&D, and those games are DM'd by the lovely Johnny Chiodini, previously of Eurogamer.

Well, Johnny has left Eurogramer to pursue his passion of tabletop games! He is on a new channel called "Dicebreaker" which is all about table top game reviews. They just launched the channel and I find Johnny charming for some reason so I have, of course, subscribed. And now I'm worried I will need to hide my wallet because I want to try all the games!

Anyhoo, if you're a fan of tabletop games or just like to watch people talk about and/or play games, why not subscribe?

Here's a video to watch, if you need to be convinced:

So, if you follow me anywhere else on social media, you are probably aware that I have been having a fan girl freak out since last night.

You see, I had a convention craving earlier this year and decided I wanted to go to PAX East. It’s a big gaming con and I’ve really gotten back into gaming this last year. Plus, it’s in Boston so I have a friend we can stay with because, let’s face it, hotels are the bank breakers.

But deep in my heart I was secretly hoping that the YouTube channel I love, OutsideXbox, and their sister channel, Outside Xtra, would make an appearance. It was a long shot, they are British and I wasn’t sure if PAX was worth hopping across the pond for.

Weeks passed and they announced they would be at a convention the weekend before PAX in England so I figured that was that, no way would they book another con so soon after that one, let alone one in the U.S....

Then last night, they announced it - they were crazy enough and they would be coming to PAX and not only that but they were setting up two meet and greet sessions AND a live D&D show!!

And I got that fangirl rush I haven’t had in years. My heart was beating so fast, the idea of getting to see them in real life, it just...it is just a really nerdy thing that makes me feel alive! I forgot how good it feels, that adrenaline mixed with a bit of anxiety and just being excited to tell someone how awesome they make you feel. It’s weird, but I am sure a lot of you understand this.

Anyway, I’ve posted about it everywhere and they even liked my posts which just encouraged me lol. But it’s so fun to be a fan of something that’s big but not huge, like back when Felicia Day was just getting big and I could walk up to her at a Con and say hello, or when Ashley Eckstein had just started Her Universe and was so sweet when she met me at SDCC. I don’t know why I get such a thrill from these things, but I do. Maybe because when they are just starting out, they still can take the time to appreciate fans. I’m not saying they don’t appreciate us once a show is super popular, but it becomes harder to find that time.

Counting the days! A little over a month now until we go! I’m hoping the full schedule will be released soon!

Some nights after dinner, we open up the YouTube app on the Xbox and just start watching random stuff. Usually it's clips from Jimmy Fallon or Conan O'Brien but a few weeks ago, Tim stumbled on a a channel with lots of "top ten" this and the videos that were amusing, even though some were a bit of a stretch since this was all the channel did. Then one of the Suggested Videos linked to a show called "OutsideXbox".

There are three of them - Jane, Mike, and Andy. They are British. They are darlings. I can't stop watching the videos.

I think what I like most (apart from the fact that Jane is there representing the ladies) is that they are never really *mean* about things. Yes, they are snarky and poke fun at a lot of video game cliches, but the humor comes from a happy place. The show is about Xbox games but they don't sit and take potshots at PC, PS4, or Wii games and frequently reference classic titles from these systems when doing their lists.

And I am addicted to this channel. My gateway drug was all the silly lists of ridiculous things, like achievements and easter eggs. Then the other night, Tim clicked on them playing through a portion of the Slender game, and while I have never really been into watching other people play games, I think having the 3 of them in the room together made this SO much fun to experience. Instead of a gamer talking to themselves, we had the three of them laughing and jumping together (and Mike acting like he wasn't scared but we know he was screaming internally the entire time).

To top it off, each Friday they post a "Show of the Week" wish some highlights and comment reactions from the videos uploaded during the week, which usually has another list and some antics in the studio.

So if you're in need of a gamer show (I didn't even know I was until I started watching!) then give OutsideXbox a try!
