OMFG - the Harry Potter program tonight at the Crofton Library was AMAZING! So much fun! [livejournal.com profile] destertale, [livejournal.com profile] mdcapsfan, and the rest of the staff there really know how to throw a shindig! I'm really really excited about our program on Monday. I have decided I want to go find some pink hair dye and go as Tonks! (now where do I get pink hair dye when it's not Halloween! Suggestions?)

Just got done chatting with [livejournal.com profile] verdatum and he said he would go to Comic Con with me. I really want to have some costumes. I'm thinking Starbuck, Vampire (because [livejournal.com profile] verdatum knows how to do the makeup) and Melaka Fray. I've never done costuming before and these all seem relatively easy.

One of the more honest HP7 reviews I've read here at Publishers Weekly. No spoilers.

*sigh* I swear I liked the book well enough, but every time I try to discuss it, it all devolves into a wankfest! And I wasn't that hardcore of a fan even!

Yeah, remember when I said I downloaded 3000 caps from PoA (capped by [livejournal.com profile] beizy who posted them on [livejournal.com profile] cap_it)? Here's the first batch of icons!

taking a cue from [livejournal.com profile] faeriesfolly, I've included icons with text, and then their respective blank versions. The blanks are not bases, so please do not edit them. Just thought you might prefer some of the crops sans text. :)

Comments are love. I still have a whole other batch to work on, so if you're looking for anything special, let me know now! Like I said, 3000 caps!

Since we didn't pre-order, we were one of the last groups called into the store. But that gave us plenty of time to babble about what we thought was going to happen (or, in the case of [livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest, sing lots of showtunes).

you're wondering now, what to do, now you know this is the end

So I finished HP7 around 7:15pm today. I'm not a hardcore Harry Potter fan. I've read all the books once, seen the movies several times, and enjoy reading the blogs of more hardcore fans than myself. But I'm not really immersed in the fandom, so my ability to recall things from the other books has always been minimal. But anyway. Here are my random thoughts about 'Deathly Hallows'

huge spoilers under here!!!! )

Hello! I am alive! And clearly a very slow reader. :( I think my entire flist has finished the book, except for me! AH!

I worked yesterday though, so that put a crimp in my time. And I read slowly. Very s l o w l y.

Anyway, I'm on page 404!!! I figure if I put my mind to it, I can finish HP7 by tonight! Then I'll read all your loverly, spoilery posts.

(I know i don't need to say this, but do not comment with spoilers! I'm still checking my email due to a chance to get free John Mayer tickets, so I might accidentally read that Harry is made out of chocolate, and that would ruin my reading experience!)

Okay, I believe it is time to start internet silence. Earlier today, HP7 spoilers were posted on one of the library blogs I read. Luckily, it was removed by the time I got around to reading my friends list, just a few random posts followed thanking mods for taking quick action.

Still...I fear, with the NY Times and Sun reviews out, plus the PDF floating around, along with DeepDiscounts major screw up, spoilers will start to emerge very soon. And I can't risk it! I just can't!!!!

So, I'm not going to read the flist until I am done with HP7. Any spoilers I post will be safely hidden under an lj-cut.

Until then - happy reading!

I'm avoiding all HP spoilers because I was spoiled for book 6 and it took some of the fun out of it. BUT that doesn't mean I can try to guess what might happen. So here is one theory I came up with today:

probably wrong, but seemed plausible )

There, just wanted to document those, in case I am right. If I'm totally wrong, than this will be amusing either way.

Man, now I want to watch the first two movies again....
orangerful: (hp hush feather // orangerful)
Last night, we went to the midnight showing of Harry Potter at the Senator Theater. More on the general experience of that later. Right now, I must get my thoughts on my movie down before I start reading everyone else's comments!

First, I'll be honest. I've only read the books once. I want to re-read them, I really do, I just haven't had time. I'm a slow reader and working in a library makes it hard for me to focus on the books I own when there are so many more to borrow! So, the events of book 5 are not fresh in my mind. I only remember the moments that had an impact on me. So I can't do a lot of book to movie comparison. This is just going to be me talking about how I felt about the movie.

After seeing 'Order', I have to say I think it is my second favorite of the film franchise -- Azkaban is still number one for me*. I think all of the Potter films suffer from the fact that they have to cover SO much time in 2 hours. Rowling stretches the story an entire year, how many books or movies can you think of where they cover an entire year in 2 hours? Not too many. And since these books (esp Order) are massive tomes, things will get cut, and editing can get a bit weird. But I felt the director and editor did a very good job with 'Order', keeping it moving but not making you feel like you'd missed huge chunks of anything.

It's clear that the screenplay writer examined the book and tried to find the biggest theme he could and latched on to that - Will Harry fall to the dark side become Voldemort? Any part of the book that was not directly tied to that theme had to go. It would have just weighed down the flow of the story and made the story too convoluted to tell on screen.

blah blah blah does she ever shut up? )

So, yes, good movie! If you sit and compare it to the book, I doubt it will hold up, but as Harry Potter films go, I think it was really good. Satisfying like a Snickers. I think the director did a much better job than the last guy juggling the massive amount of plot that needed to be shown vs. what the fans would want to see.

Oh, and if you see the A&E special is on TV and you have not seen the movie yet - DO NOT WATCH IT! They show SO much of the movie, it would just ruin so many moments. Tape it for later but don't watch it. I just started to (because I DVR'd it) and I'm so happy I didn't watch it, I think it would have taken some of the fun out of the film for me.

*for those who care, the order goes Azkaban, Phoenix, Sorcerer's Stone, Chamber, Goblet.

Yes, so you know my thoughts on the movie, but let me tell you about the evening.

Actually, everything went really smoothly! I snuck out of work a teensy bit earlier than scheduled (by starving myself...I doubt I'll ever do that again!) and managed to have enough time to grab batteries for my camera, get home, and change before [livejournal.com profile] blu_harvest showed up. Not long after, [livejournal.com profile] heiland_coo and [livejournal.com profile] lostacanthus arrived and all 4 of us piled into the Mini (yes it can be done!). The weather behaved so we were able to put the top down, which was a lot of fun. Conversation ranged from what we hoped to see in the movie, to the upcoming Golden Compass film, to why boy-on-boy action (in manga) appeals to 12 year old girls.

We arrived at the theater a little around 9:30. We called Zen West and ordered some nachos. A few minutes later, [livejournal.com profile] destertale and Dave arrived. Then [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m and [livejournal.com profile] _____saveferris found us in the alley way. Conversation went from Laurel's costume, to the upcoming Crofton program, to how I told [livejournal.com profile] dstntp1lgr1m not to talk during movies, and our movie viewing memories from childhood.

They opened up the theater around 11pm and let everyone in to find seats, use the restroom, and get popcorn. Good thing too, the ladies room line took about 30 minutes to get through! Conversation here started with the invention of the urinal, moved to the works of Neil Gaiman, and ended with a giant bucket of popcorn in my lap being 1/3 empty before the movie even started!

Theater owner Thomas Kiefaber got up in a silly red wizard hat and thanked everyone for coming. And then, the curtains parted (yes they have curtains!) and the show just started. (shhh no talking!)

Afterwards, we chatted a bit about how much we enjoyed the movie, then fell back into our cars to head home. On the ride home, we mostly talked about what little things we liked about the movie, what things we wished had been in there, and how there are some Amish people out there that are poly-dactyl midgets.

While I work on my little "thoughts on OotP" post, you have got to see this because it is hilarious/cute.

Seriously, if you don't have [livejournal.com profile] cj_rss on your flist, you are missing out.

EDIT: Also - Portland, Maine winds the coolest city award from me. Check out Mugglefest My uncle is apparently making wands to sell! He better save one for his favorite niece!!!

I got the coolest freebie today! I found a package on my desk when I got in with a note from a co-worker that said:

"Sam, I don't know why I stood in line for this at ALA. I've never even read a Harry Potter book! So when I got home, I tried to think of the biggest fan I knew and thought of you, so this is for you"

It's a really cool bag with the Deathly Hallows cover art (US version) on it!!!!

I am so using this for the movie premiere and book night!!

And this is why you should make all the people you know aware of your fandoms, you never know what cool swag they might come across ;-)

Also - OMG NEW HARRY POTTER TRAILER!

You know, before, I knew the movie was coming out and that I would go see it - but now that I've watched that I WANT to SEE IT! :D Oooh I hope it's as exciting as this edited 60 seconds makes it look!

Something I noticed while showing my co-worker, Amy, the British Harry Potter cover:

Amazon.co.uk has an ENTIRE section of it's site dedicated to Harry Potter. And this isn't some hidden away corner you can only find when searching for an HP title, nope - it's one of the MAIN choices listed across the top menu bar.

Also, it appears that the Brits have "adult" versions of HP. Not that they have naughty bits, but just that the jackets have been redesigned to resemble a "normal" adult fiction book. You know the type, boring front cover, nice photo of the author on the back.

I guess it would just be too embarrassing to be seen with the brightly colored children's versions. Or the Super Special Edition (who the frak designed that one???)

Also - in case you were wondering - my library system already has 325 holds on 'Deathly Hallows'. I can't imagine how many copies we'll be getting. It shall be insane. I mean, for a normal book, for every 7 holds, we would order another copy. But this is far from a normal book - it's an event.

Harry Potter does not make me want to shoot people. It's articles like this that make me want to hurt people.

And it's 10 times worse that it's covered in a UK newspaper, making us (as in the U.S.) look even worse than we already do. I SWEAR TO YOU WE ARE NOT ALL RAVING LUNATICS!

Harry Potter is the "King of Darkness"

seriously, have they even READ the books? How can anyone take this pope seriously if he decides to wage war on a children's book? a bestselling children's series???? Aren't there more EVIL books lurking around for him to pick on? COME ON!

They finally cut Daniel Radcliffe's hair, which is good because it was getting out of hand. The bad part is, he looks like mini-Giles. At least, in that poster he does...to me...but I have buffy on the brain anyhow.

Okay, I'm still recovering from being out so late last night. The movie was good. We had a great time at The Senator, as always, fantastic crowd of fans that cheered at all the right moments. Best place to see a movie - ever. I hope the Senator is always around.

Anyhoo - [livejournal.com profile] jellibean did a mini-review in her journal, now it's my turn.

Basic rundown of the films so far (IMHO):

HP & SS - first movie, made for everyone, come see it!
HP & CoS - second movie, made for everyone...you haven't read the books? oh that's okay
HP & PoA - what do you mean you haven't read the books yet???.....Oh FINE, you can see this movie, but bring a friend.
HP & GoF - you haven't read the freakin' books yet? well TOO BAD! You've had plenty of time and we can't be in the theater forever, learn to read before you come see this...*mumble grumble something about kids today*

spoilery? of course! )

It's pretty slow at work right now, so I'm going to try and post some of my most recent creations (sure fire way to make it get busy out here).
