Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals.

In 2020, I dived into the world of tabletop and roleplaying games headfirst but I haven’t actually played that many yet though, so for 2021, I want to play the games I bought last year.

(that…isn’t all of them…)

I went a little wild on Kickstarter while I was working from home so I will have even more games arriving over the next few months. My goal is to play them all and then blog about the experience here.

Small selection of my Kickstarter Backed Projects

I also got into painting miniatures. I’m not actually using them for games, just enjoying the chill times of painting for fun. One of my Christmas presents was a nice paint set for minis so I am committed to it now. I backed the Kickstarter for Sea of Legends and…yeah, that has a LOT of minis so that should keep me busy once it arrives (hopefully February!).

I’m setting my GoodReads goal for 2021 at 50 books. I had a lot of trouble focusing last year, but I am hoping that this will change as the months go on. I have binged a few graphic novels already though so my goal has some padding to start. If I feel like I can read like I was before 2020, I might up that number but 50 seems good to start.

I also want to do a rewatch of my movie collection. It has been awhile since I revisted a lot of those films and many of them I saw in the theater, LOVED, bought the disc…and then never bothered watching again. I want to see if they have withstood the test of time. I’ll try to post about them on here, or at the very least update my Letterboxd on a regular basis.

When I first saw this “challenge”, I didn’t think I would have any goals, but now that I have typed these out, I’m feeling pretty good about the nerdy, fandom part of my soul having plenty to do this year. Do you have any fandom goals for 2021?

Challenge #3: Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why?

I would love to get coffee with Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. They seem like a hoot. I have adored Kristen since Veronica Mars and I watched every episode of ‘The Good Place’ and I am sad she is not on my TV every week anymore. The two of them are #relationshipgoals and I think it would just be fun to hang out and chat with her about whatever. She has a beautiful way of looking at the world.

Next up, I would to meet up with Rian Johnson in a bar for drinks, because I’d want to loosen his tongue a bit and then get him to explain his vision for the final movie in the sequel trilogy. I’m sure I would have to sign a NDA afterwards, but it would be worth it to just know. I would even pay for the drinks. Something tells me Johnson would just be a fun person to talk to.

Last but not least, I would want to host a HUGE dinner for the Oxtra and Dicebreaker teams. I love watching them interact on streams and even if I was running around filling drinks and serving food and didn’t get to talk, I would love to just listen to them all laughing and talking. Maybe we could even find time for a game together! They are all so down to Earth, I just feel like listening to their opinions on life, the universe and everything would make for a lovely evening.

Oddly enough, I’m struggling to think of an fictional characters I want to hang out with right now. The only one that comes to mind is I would want to get a burger of the day at Bob’s Burgers. But I would sit in a booth and just observe the shenanigans LOL.

In an effort to use this blog more, I'm going to participate in the annual 'Snowflake Challenge' so I post on a regular basis. Hopefully, eventually, I will just make some time for blogging and enjoy the process of getting some of the thoughts constantly rolling around in my head committed to the digital page.

Enter, the Snowflake Challenge (details here)

Challenge #1 In your own space, introduce yourself!

I'm orangerful aka Sam. Librarian by day, nerd 24/7.

If I listed every fandom/obsession I have, we would be here all day, so let's just hit the big ones that will probably give you a pretty well rounded view of who I am:

Happy New Year! It's 2021 - let's do better this year!

These are my hand-picked results from fandoms I actually know enough about to get why this character was chosen for me. Yes, there are two from Star Wars because there are technically two results based on their calculations. For the rest, I got the same character each time, but for Star Wars I got Luke and Leia. (actually, I did for BSG too, I got Boomer, but the collage was uneven LOL)

Link if you want to try. I took the 110 question quiz, it's pretty quick.

Toss a coin to your fangirl...

TFW you retweet something and put a ridiculous comment to go along with it...only to have the creator/showrunner/headwriter/exec. producer of that show "Like" your tweet and comment on it.

[profile] thenewbuzzwuzz posted this meme and I had to play too, mostly because I already talk about X-Files and Buffy this way.

The one who seduced you, screwed you over, broke your heart in a million pieces, and laughed about it:
The X-Files, for sure. I devoted so much to that show in the early years. So many Friday nights at home in high school because I couldn't miss an episode. Wrote my first fan-fic, got into the fandom community. But the mythology was a mess and promises were broken over and over. And I may still be bitter.

Honorable mention goes to Game of Thrones. And everyone knows why.

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp:
Whedonverse, but specifically Buffy. When I broke up with X-Files, Buffy was there to show me what a series where the writers actually tracked the mythology and stories looked like. I see them every day, in the sense that I have all the DVDs, figures, and books on display but I watched it SO MUCH at the start that I don't even need to rewatch them anymore, I can just close my eyes and see the scenes LOL. But every now and then, I need to watch Buffy, Angel, or Firefly and remember when these were shows on regular TV.

The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized they really were fucking creepy:
Riverdale. That first season was so much fun. It was self-aware and turned the squeaky clean comic world of Archie upside down. The mystery was twisty enough to keep me guessing. And the characters were just quirky enough to pull me in. But the second and third season got into a zone of ridiculous I could no longer take. It was never realistic, but you can only push it so far before it becomes unwatchable for me.

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor and whom you'd still really like to get with again, although you're relieved they don't actually live in town:
"Dark", the German Netflix sci-fi show. I binged that second season hard and I want to know what happens next but I'm okay waiting because it has time travel and I'm so confused about who was where when what how now?

The steady:
I debated between my two big fandoms here, but in the end, it's gotta be Star Wars. I've been a fan since birth and it is the happy place I go back to when I need to escape all reality.

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with:
American Gods. We've watched the show but I'm not compelled to go beyond it in any way.

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies:
Attack on Titan. I watch the show but I'm not hardcore enough to read the manga. But when it is on, I'm ready to talk about it and rewatch the whole series, until we are caught up and another show takes its place.

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere:
Star Trek Discovery. I keep meaning to watch it, I see little conversations about it all over the place on blogs but I've never made the time for it, mostly because the only way for me to watch is DVD from the library. CBS All Access is a stupid business model.

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?"
Marvel stuff. I mean, I get it, I was there at the start and saw the movies but at this point, I'm amazed how many people are still there for it all.

[profile] thenewbuzzwuzz mentioned Supernatural in hers and I agree with that too.

The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners:
Hannibal. I can't even remember how I ended up watching this show, a series that should not have appealed to me - its crime, its gore. But it was also REALLY clever and smart and kept me guessing. I hadn't been so enraptured with a show in such a long time when I stumbled into this one.

The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better:
Mindhunter. I watched the first season when it came out and loved it, just finished the second and LOVED IT. But they were both binges and I need to go back and really give each episode the attention it deserves.

The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit:
If it hadn't been for the lousy 4th season, I would say Veronica Mars.

Maybe I will say Stranger Things here. I didn't hate the latest season, I was just unimpressed with most of it. I'd be there for another season IF things get tightened up a bit and the characters are less obnoxious.

Your hot new flame:
The EXPANSE!!!!!!!! Three seasons and I still feel like we're in the honeymoon phase.

and Schitt's Creek, which I also randomly show up and tell people to watch without them asking. Right now that show is perfect to me.

The one who stole your significant other:
Tim really isn't in to TV shows, but I know when he likes one because he will ask for it after it airs. Right now, it is 'Killjoys'. But beyond tv and movies, he's hardcore into Star Citizen, a game that is still in testing. Pretty sure he was up until 2am flying his ship around last night.

This is a bit of a mini-rant but I was finally able to put my finger on one of my angry!fangirl triggers and it is entitlement.

For example: I wasn't a big fan of the finale of Game of Thrones. We've discussed it on here, my coworkers and I have discussed it, the whole world has discussed it.

THAT IS GOOD. That is what entertainment should do - start discussions. Even something as frustrating as the finale of a series, the one good thing it brings is discussion. Yeah, we were upset, angry, frustrated, and we all talked about it and it was great.

But then things got mean. People started petitions to re-write and re-film the show. First, it is insulting to everyone that worked on this show (I think [personal profile] rhoda_rants might have been the one to tweet this) - these people spent years writing, filming, editing, and more to create this show for us. They were paid to do their job and they did. HBO is NOT going to pay them to do it over. The show is over, the series is done.

Second, it is just so entitled and immature to demand that the artist remake THEIR story in YOUR vision. Yeah, their vision might have been poorly thrown together, a mess, not beta-tested, but it was their story. The end. Don't like it? That's fine. Tell people not to watch the show. Lament the mistakes. But how RUDE to demand such a thing.

One of the people I follow in Twitter (a random Star Wars fan that I'm still not 100% sure how I ended up following) has turned in to one of the whiny fanboys about the latest trilogy and it drives me crazy, but he mentioned GoT and Last Jedi in the same tweet and it made me realize something - one man's trash is another woman's really enjoyed Star Wars movie. How do we know there are not fans out there who liked GoTs ending? They might exist, but the constant screams of other fans have drowned them out. But should we make them feel bad about it?

I really enjoyed TFA and TLJ. Yeah TLJ has flaws, but I really enjoyed watching the story unfold. He tweeted something the other day about how the 'Rise of Skywalker' trailer looked like they would "apologize to fans" for what they did in TLJ and, again, that entitlement, that taking it personally. Star Wars is a franchise enjoyed by millions of people. For you to claim that your experience with the series is THE defining experience and therefore if you did not like the latest movie, the artists owe YOU an apology for not enjoying THEIR story...it's childish.

He's gone on some other tangent now about corporations owning the intellectual property and hiring "mercenary artists" to do their work and I feel like I might be done because that phrase is just very nasty sounding and sounds like he is done talking now. This happened before when we tried to discuss TLJ because he hit a ridiculous level and I decided not to follow.

*phew* sorry. It has just been bothering me and I keep responding. We're debating and it is a civil conversation but for some reason it just annoys me no end. Maybe it is because of the internet and that we have access to show creators in a way we didn't before and people abuse that power.

okay, done now. I think I'll play Monster Prom and clear my head a bit :P

Posts are going up at [community profile] crossovercoffee if you want to check it out!

I even participated and it felt so good! I made a little graphic, but after making the image, I was inspired to write a quick little ficlet/drabble (I'm not really good with fanfic terms) of what was going through my head while I was working on it.

Tonight is my "Organizing Your Digital Photos" program at the library. The weather has been GORGEOUS so I'm a little worried people won't remember because nice weather + longer days = walks in the park. But maybe they will just walk to the library! Anyway, wish me people!

First poll is up! :D Let's see what kind of trouble we get into.
orangerful: Santa Yoda felt your presents (star wars)
So, I recently realized that I need to toss out most of my old Her Universe shirts. It's sad but true, that the "plus size" Juniors shirts are not cut for someone who is an adult with boobs. Recently I noticed that they are just rubbing under my arms the wrong way and causing problems.

Luckily, there are plenty of new Star Wars movies on the horizon so I have been buying up the plus size shirts from Torrid and Hot Topic to replace my collection LOL.

Yes, that is my excuse for impulse purchasing the new Han Solo top and bottoms from Hot Topic a few minutes ago, even though the pricing is a bit silly, I couldn't resist!

Also I have a soft spot for bell bottoms (I blame George Harrison and his sweet style on the cover of Abbey Road).

Her Universe Solo Bell Bottoms

And, of course, I needed the top to match! LOOK AT THOSE GLORIOUS 70s COLORS!

Now I need to swear off shopping for awhile...I was really bad this past month with all my Kohls/Haute/Birthday cash that the stores gave me. This will be it though, I promise (oooh wait what is this email from Torrid with the other Star Wars tops...)

This is what happens when you are home and they are working on replacing both your front AND back door so you just sit at your computer, unguarded.

OMG Funk Pop has my number (and all my money): they just announced a Fraggle Rock POP set, due out in December.

THEY EACH COME WITH A LITTLE DOOZER OMG!

I need them ALL! I'm such a sucker for Jim Henson related merch LOL. Oddly, I did not buy the Muppets POPS but these just seem cuter. They've started to loosen up on their designs a bit.

Also, there is apparently an Emperor's New Groove set coming next year - I just want Kronk.

Of course, if I get Kronk, I'll want Yzma...which means I should get Llama Kuzco...slipperly slope.

#nerdproblems, amIright?

To avoid any more deep thoughts today, I spent any downtime at work browsing the #SDCC2017 and #RIVERDALESDCC tag on Twitter and THIS HAPPENED!!!!!!!

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 OF RIVERDALE, DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT ALL YET!!!!!!!!

LINKING SO THAT THE "still image" doesn't spoil anyone because I don't trust YouTube to make the right decision

...I need to make some Riverdale icons...

I finally got to watch my blu-ray of Force Awakens yesterday YAY!!!!!!!!! The first of many many viewings, I am sure. I feel like this one will definitely be a good "background" movie for when I'm working on stuff. I've seen it 5 times now and I think most of it is committed to memory LOL.

Anyway, I had a thought last night while watching a certain scene:

SPOILERS for TFA if you haven't seen it !! )

In short, ADAM DRIVER'S FAAAAAAAAAAAACE. LOL. He really is a good actor, I really have liked him in everything I have seen him in.

The Writer Who Made Me To Love Comics Taught Me To Hate Them

Just finished reading this opinion piece from Polygon about Frank Miller and his history of writing big comics but also how, as the years went on, it became clear he had issues with women, among other things.

I think this is an issue many of us in fandom, especially women and LGBTQ people, deal with all the time. We fall in love with a part fandom as a kid, we adore it and then, as we get older, we start to see the flaws and the cracks. Sometimes, we can shrug it off but other times it really begins to hurt our ability to enjoy those original works and things to come. We keep following the fandom, but in our heart of hearts, we are a little disgusted that we ever liked it in the first place.

I think the fandom I am most forgiving to and I am willing to turn the other cheek is probably the original 'Star Wars'. I think it is because it relies so heavily on the hero myth, I let it get away with things and because it was the "first" movie of it's kind (I'm not so nice to the prequels, enough time had passed for things to be updated.) There will always be the "metal bikini problem", among other things, but in the end I can still watch Star Wars and love it.

But I've definitely started using a keener eye when looking at representation of any kind in my stories now. I haven't revisited too many things from my past to see how they fair, though I do remember starting to show Sylvia 'Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure' and getting turned off when they started to call each other 'fags' anytime they showed affection for each other.

I'm sure I could think of more if I ponder for awhile. What about you guys? Any writers, actors, musicians that you were a big fan of as a kid but then you found out more and became aware that the person behind the stories wasn't all that great?
orangerful: (star wars vii girl // orangerful)
Just wanted to link these two blog posts about Rey because they made me both cry tears of rage and joy at the same time.

Rey is not a role model for little girls (spoilers ahead) EDIT: this article title is misleading, click through and read it, it's not what you think)

Rey from 'Force Awakens' is NOT a Mary Sue!

I have some other thoughts to post as well, mostly reflections on my reaction to Rey and Finn, both things that I wish I didn't have to react to. But I should probably not type those up while on the desk at work because it will require me to think a lot LOL.

On the lighter side of things, I typed up an incredibly long post about standing in line for 'Star Wars', how this was the last time I would probably do that just because the "art" of waiting in line has gone away.
