These are so adorable, I had to share. Everyone needs some cute Doctor Who pics on their computer, right?

BBC is promoting their new Doctor Who short story collection The Twelve Doctors of Christmas by giving away a free short story from the collection. I know there are a lot of Whovians on my flist. Grab the pdf of The Red Bicycle before they change their mind!

So, THE TRUTH IS REVEALED: DOCTOR WHO RETURNS TO STREAMING AS AMAZON PRIME EXCLUSIVE

Here I was hoping BBC America would get their act together and start their own streaming but NOPE Amazon flashed the most cash.

Not sure when this goes live as I don't see it on the site right now.

Ah well, at least we can finally watch season 9!
orangerful: (doctor who pointing // orangerful)
While we were all ranting and raving about how Doctor Who will no longer be streaming, it suddenly dawned on me that maybe I should search my library's catalog and see if we have Season 9.

And we do.

So I'm on the wait list now for Part 1 and 2.

I think most public libraries have DVDs now, so if you are struggling to finish the series or suddenly have an urge to binge watch them all again, check your local system! We just opened up our catalog to do inter-library loans of DVDs as well so that other libraries in the state of Maryland can request them from us so I'm betting even your small town library might be able to ILL the item for you.

Free and legal! Suck it BBC!

I can't believe it. The Doctor Who 50th trailer I posted last week was totally FAKE, made by some insanely hardcore fans who know how to manipulate video like nobody's business. Check it out.

Finally watched the last two episodes of this season of Doctor Who.

I am disappoint.

I feel like the writers dropped the ball on what could have been an epic episode but mostly became sorta...meh.

**sigh** I need to just realize that nothing will ever be as well done as Series 5.

More thoughts later, when it's not 12:30 and I don't have to work the next morning.

And then I'll go tag hunting to find everyone else's reaction posts

(or you can just be super-helpful and post links in the comments...then I can read them at work tomorrow...because when I work on Saturdays, I hardly ever feel like doing work...)
orangerful: (kicker extras // orangerful)

  • Doctor Who: Not really happy with this season so far, but I have not watched Power of Three yet which is kind of the episode I've been waiting for. Sorta wish they had started with it, but maybe it will somehow make the first 3 clunkers better. I'm looking forward to the new companion. I loved Amy & Rory but...well, it's nice to have two companions who actually WANT to get on with their lives instead of pining for the Doctor. I think that is what annoyed me the most with Rose, Martha, and Donna was how obsessed they became with the Doctor. But he does need a companioin. And I thought Jenna-Louise Coleman was adorable in the "Asylum of the Daleks" episode!

  • Teen Wolf: Started this last night and I'm hooked. It's actually a lot better than I expected, especially since it's on MTV. I checked the DVD out from the library but I just checked and it is up on Hulu...so now I don't have the pressure to watch all 12 episodes in 7 days. I like that the main actor isn't classically pretty. He's got a little mole thing on his chin. I think this makes him cuter than the stock pretty-boys, gives him more character.

  • Grimm: Season 2 has been awesome, I like it a lot more than Season 1. NOW WHEN THE FRAK DOES IT COME BACK??

  • Raising Hope: Just watched the Season 3 premiere on Hulu. So great. I love this shows heart. It's got some immature humor and can be so wrong at times, but it's "morals" are sorta heart-warming. I was hesitant when I saw the plot start to unfold for s3 but by the end of the episode, I was tearing up (or I would have been if my internet wasn't being wonky and making the damn show buffer every few minutes ARGH! Can't tell if it was Hulu or my provider...but I digress.

Waiting anxiously for the return of Community and Happy Endings and the start of the final season (*wipes tear*) of 30 Rock.

Curious about Arrow but mostly because John Barrowman talked about it at D*C. Not sure what to think of Beauty & the Beast except that it will be full of pretty because I've always thought that Kristen Kreuk is gorgeous.

Cautious when it comes to Revolution. I'll wait to see what people are saying after it's been on for a month or so. Anyone have any compelling arguments for why I should watch right now?

Debating if I want to even watch Walking Dead. [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat said he will watch it so I might just watch by default. I dunno, sorta over it. I hate everyone on that show. Something needs to happen for me to give a crap.

OMG OCT 17 AMERICAN HORROR STORY I HAVE NO WORDS! WELL ONE WORD - AAAAAAAH!

Any other shows people are hearing a buzz about?
orangerful: (vm o rly? // orangerful)
So [livejournal.com profile] andy_wolverton and Beckie have been obsessed with Breaking Bad for the past month. They keep talking about, marathoning seasons and then discussing story arcs. But I just can't seem to bring myself to pick up where I left off in Season 2. Karen asked me why that was - why they were raving and I seemed so reluctant and I think I figured out the two things that my shows require:

Likeable characters and, most of all, hope.

Shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men etc. are well-written, character driven stories but I watch them and I get depressed by the sheer hopelessness of those worlds. And that lack of hope is magnified by the scarcity of likeable characters I can identify with. If there is no one for me to root for, it's hard for me to stay engaged. It's why my interest in Once Upon a Time started to waver. I think this also why I had to walk away from Walking Dead...the whole premise of the series is that the zombie apocolypse has no cure and they must all learn to live with the threat...and if i hadn't read the comcis and knew how utterly sad the story was going to get, I might be able to convince myself there was hope but...no, there is no hope. I think that is almost the mantra of the show - oh did you think that was hope? *shoots hope in the face*

My favorite shows of all time - Buffy, Angel, Firefly - Joss is all about the hope. Doctor Who - oh heck yes! It's all about a rogue alien's faith in humanity and what we can do. Avatar? "I believe that Aang can save the world". Battlestar Galactica, though overly-serious and insanely depressing at times, always had that hint of hope and the ending itself was about everything coming together. Yeah, it was a bit cheesy but I appreciate the moral of the story. Even Game of Thrones, a dark fantasy world overrun by war, has hope, represented by young Arya's tenacity to survive and Dhanerys' baby dragons, to name a few.

But...BUT - Why do I like American Horror Story? Perhaps it's because of the upfrontness about lack of hope? They are all DOOMED from the start, right? Or maybe, in a twisted way, horror can only exist if there is hope. Without hope, would it cease to have any power because you would just give up and killing someone who has already given up as nowhere near as terrifying as someome who still believes they will make it out alive.

(BTW if you have not seen, there are some teasers up for the new season. No spoilers, just creepy as hell!!!!!!!!)

So, in conclusion, yes, there are LOTS of amazing TV shows, but I can't spend my time on the ones that don't give me hope.

And also it needs to be October so I can watch the new season of AHS.

GERONIMO!

NEW DOCTOR WHO SERIES 7 TRAILER!!!!!!!!

YouTube no longer has the "old embed code" up so I guess no more embedding into LJ. :-(

Still - YAY!!!!!!!!!! Even though Series 6 was just okay compared to 5 (but really, how could you beat 5???) I'm excited about 7 and hoping for more epic epicness. :D

First bit of awesome coming out of Comic-Con today -- Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrive Universal Remote. Oh yeah, I'd buy that! Wonder how ridiculous the price will be...I don't really care though. I MUST HAVE IT! Seriously, between this and the Kinect, I will not be living in a Sci-Fi universe in my home! Waving my arms, talking to the screen. GEEK!JOY!

Speaking of Geek!Joy, I haven't read any Star Wars comic books since probably the 1990s, but this announcement that Brian Wood (DMZ, Local) is going to do a run makes me go HM?????? I may have to check in to these. OMG!

This is just making me more excited for Dragon*Con. I think I might attempt to throw together a Leela outfit since [livejournal.com profile] maybedeadcat sorta has a basic Fry outfit. (I'm probably spelling those names wrong...I'm very new to Futurama). I'd love to have a Dr. Girlfriend outfit, I've watched more Venture Bros. than Futurama, but I doubt I can throw hers together from a single trip to Kohls.

Just saw this AWESOME Rainbow Dash hoodie on ThinkGeek. She's not my favorite but...OMFG IT HAS WINGS!!!!!!

Was on hold with my cable company so I could get my promotional rate renewed and the message kept saying "Please hold the line". "Hold the line?" Isn't that what they say in military shows when the enemy army is attacking? I kept having these weird flashes of Band of Brothers type guys yelling "HOLD THE LINE!"

okay, I need to eat something before I go to work. We've got the magician summer show today (I so want to ask him if he does tricks or ILLUSIONS!) which means it will be hella crazy with kids when I get there. Going to need food in my belly if I'm going to face the crowds.

OMG DRAGON*CON SO SOOON!!!!!!!!!

16 days!!!!!!!!!

After searching and failing to find a wig that met my needs, I ordered 3 cans of black hair spray last night plus some purple hair clips in the hopes of being able to pull off Fray hair on D*C. I paid for ground shipping so hopefully they will arrive BEFORE the event. Shipping was more than the damn spray but none of the party city stores near me had it in stock so I figured the $6 shipping was probably equivalent to the amount of gas money that would have been spent driving all over to find spray.

On an unrelated note - tumblr is sort of annoying me. I think the issue is that so many of the tumblr's I follow are fandom related so it's like fandom with no filter of blogging or comments, just statements and they just annoy me. I'm growing tired of Harry Potter/Pottermore posting to the point that, while I was sort of "meh" about HP before, I'm beginning to HATE HP. I know it's not HP's fault, but still...gah, the books were just okay people. The first three were fun and then JK's editor apparently died because after that they get long and ridiculous and that seventh book? Blah.

And the Doctor Who wank?? Jeebus, people do understand that the ACTORS who played the Doctors left because they wanted to go and do other things, they were not forced off at gun point. I'm so frakkin sick of the Rose this Rose that Moffat sucks blah blah blah. Why are you watching if you don't like it??? Gah, like I said, it's because people just post images and statements, it's not like on here when actual thought is put into explaining their problems with the show.

Ummmmmmmm yes I had a couple beers when I got home, played some WoW with [livejournal.com profile] simontrueheart (yes, I'm back on the WoW...it will probably last until the Star Wars MMORPG comes out and who the hell knows when that will be! Even BIOWARE won't say, WTF?)....I think I'm going to put on a DVD now and play in photoshop because I haven't made any graphics in AGES and it's just sad. Need to use that side of my brain...

Definitely one of the creepiest episodes of Doctor Who ever. Plus, I think we have enough bits and pieces to keep us occupied for the rest of the season.

Okay, now on to my slightly more detailed thoughts (with pictures and spoilers):
